Day 63: Obama Lauds Energy Entrepreneurs

On the sixty-third day of his presidency, President Obama called on companies to come up with advancements in renewable energy to help the country get through the recession.

"At this moment of necessity, we need you," Mr. Obama said during an speech at the White House. "We need some inventiveness. Your country needs you to create new jobs and lead new industries. Your country needs you to mount a historic effort to end, once and for all, our dependence on foreign oil."

Mr. Obama also praised the bank rescue plan unveiled by Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner today after a meeting with Geithner and his other economic advisers.

"The good news is that we have one more critical element in our recovery, but we've still got a long way to go, and we've got a lot of work to do. But I'm very confident that, with the team that we've got assembled, we're going to be able to make it happen," he said.

President Obama should make clear where his administration stands on the issue of carbon emissions as part of our near term energy policy. The Oil & Gas industry is spending millions of dollars in a dis-information advertising campaign which attempts to mislead the American public as to the meaning of the phrase "clean fuel", implying that natural gas in particular is a "clean" energy source. While natural gas may actually produce fewer particulate emissions than coal or oil-based fuels, it remains a fossil fuel which releases fossilized CO2 into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to global warming. Coincidentally, ads sponsored by the American Petroleum Instituted deliberately and purposefully attempt to plant the idea that failure to support the use of oil and gas based fuels will cause Americans to lose critical assets in their 401Ks, mutual and pension funds.

Meanwhile, significant advances are being made in the practical application of hydrogen as a transportation fuel, and hydrogen combustion produces no CO2 whatsoever. Given a choice between investing in re-tooling our vehicle fleets and fuel distribution infrastructure to support Hydrogen vs. Natural Gas, we must at least confront the question as to what our national priorities should be, and which direction the Obama administration intends to support. And institutional advertising should clearly identify the terminology it uses with respect to the impact of utilizing a particular type of fuel on the environment, including CO2 emissions.
