Poll: Americans Oppose Legalizing Marijuana, Lowering Drinking Age

(CBS)
A majority of Americans oppose legalizing marijuana and lowering the drinking age even if it would mean economic benefits for cash-strapped state and local governments, a new CBS News survey finds.

Fifty-eight percent of Americans say marijuana should be illegal, even after being presented with the idea that the drug could be taxed. Thirty-one percent say it should be legal, while another seven percent say it should be legal if it is taxed and the money goes to projects.

California Assemblyman Tom Ammiano introduced a bill in his economically struggling state calling for legalizing the drug and regulating it in much the same way alcohol is regulated. The California Board of Equalization, which collects taxes, estimates California’s possible revenue from doing so at $1.3 billion per year.

More than 500 economists, including Milton Friedman, have endorsed the notion of legalizing marijuana for the potential economic benefits taxing it could provide. President Obama opposes marijuana legalization.

Asked about whether they favored lowering the drinking age to 18 – a change, they were told, that could allow police more time to enforce laws besides underage drinking – roughly three in four Americans expressed their opposition. Just 24 percent said they favored such a move.

The strongest support for lowering the drinking age comes from Americans under 30, but even six in ten in this group are opposed.

As CBS’ 60 Minutes reported last month, some believe that lowering the drinking age could actually make young people safer, though others strongly disagree.

58% + 31% = 89%, 89% + 7% = 96%

How can you make an official poll on how every single American feels about this subject when you do not include the entire 100% of said country? The government did this to my people, too. and how many Native Americans do you personally know?

If you think marijuana is bad them you haven't seen it all. Alcohol affect teens more than marijuan does. The government should just legalize it and get it over with! After all this is supposed to be a free country so why can't the government just leave the weed smokers alone and legalize it!!!!!

This year makes 40 years that I have personally smoked pot. It
all began in Military School where I was sent because I was too wild. Oh well... I did learn early to be selective about who I dealt with for this reason I have never had any legal problems. What I want to convey though is that when pot is compared to other illegal substances the cons don't stack up... My argument has always been that alcolhol is legal and you can walk into a liquor store spend less than $10 and kill yourself by comsuming what you bought too fast or by drinking too much. You could smoke a boat load of pot and the only thing you would want would be a cold beer and a bag of Lays chips... :) There have been studies done on this. Do some research.. The reason that pot was criminalized to start with is because Randolph Heartz and Dupont wanted it made illegal because hemp rope was in direct competition with their newly discovered nylon rope. The power of the lobbyist again.. Oh well. It all comes down to money always...Personally I feel pot has been a blessing in my life....

if you disagree with this poll please visit the following web site "http://capwiz.com/norml2/issues/alert/?alertid=13012496"
this is a page from NORML's website that will help you to show your opinion in a way that is both useful and productive. basically it tells you a little more about the issue and at the bottom of the page is a pre-adressed, pre-written letter which you may e-mail directly to obama if you agree that this poll was inacurate, out of focus of the matter of greater importance, and needs to be re-viewed with a closer eye and an open mind.
thank you for your consideration in this matter.

I think it's a joke anyone still considers marijuana to be dangerous. I came from a fairly traditional family and as a got older and went off to college even my mother and grandmother now want marijuana to be legal. People who still believe the propoganda taught to us by D.A.R.E. officers in school simply have a complete lack of intellectual curiosity.

PS.

I did receive a text message on my cell phone in a chain mail fashion stating something about a poll on the legalization of marijuana and Obama, blah, blah, blah. I did not call the number it gave to participate because of the fear of telemarketers obtaining my phone number. If this is the poll they are talking about then that is a **** poor way of conducting a actual peoples' poll. What ever happened to sending actual pamphlets in the mail?

As a past heavy pot head. I say "past" because I have not smoked in a few years. But that does not mean I will never smoke again. I am all for the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes. I would vote on it!!! I think it would create a strong increase in revenue for the local, state, and federal governments. I am too a REAL VETERAN who has been deployed into hostile fire for our country, and no I'm am not a VIETNAM VET who came home to a bad situation and a hand full of bad habits. I was a volunteer, not a draft pick!!! I did it to give you lames the opportunity to be pro-choice. We as Americans don't need to become a communist society.

Polls are not the way to measure the merit behind any decision. The majority never have a cohesive thought and react with hysteria to things they don't understand or that frighten them, which is just about everything outside their immediate periphery. Examples of what majorities have believed: non-catholics are heretics and deserved to be burned at the stake; your strange neighbor lady is a witch and deserves to be burned at the stake; those strange people who live across the border deserve to die and you deserve their possessions; actually this list is endless and shows that the majority is indeed the lowest common denominator.

Very sneaky to name a poll about marijuana that includes under age drinking. The only thing they have in common is that they are both illegal. Let us see what a poll would say with the subject just as it is by itself. Oh yeah, they did and it was 81% for legalization. Making a plant, a weed illegal should be illegal. Just think of the law enforcement officers that would be out of work if they didn't have to fight that particular war.

This poll is a joke, I'm American, they didnt ask me, they didnt ask my wife or anyone I know.

On another poll I posted in a local area forum it is:

81% for legalization
13% opposed to legalization
4% undecided

I challenge anyone to post a poll in their local community forum and see what the real percentages are.

What the hell is wrong with you selfish ******* scum of earth. Your basing this question on morals. Moral are for the weak and should not be applied to someone who chooses not to follow them. Thats the thing about american. Always trying to do whats "right" instead of progressing as a country you fall behind due to morals and laws. You make sick !!!

Marijuana is the safest drug and happens to be the most popular considering 1/8 americans will smoke anyways this year, seems stupid not to make that money and give it to the mexican cartels, I don't think that is a laughing matter!

The U.S. Constitution guarantees every American the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness regardless of what anyone else thinks of it takes to make that person happy. Marijuana prohibition cheats every American out of all 3. It cheats us out of our life by taking from us the very essence of our life, time, when they put us in jail for possession of marijuana. They steal our liberty when they tell us we can do as we please as long as what we are doing is something they approve of. They take our pursuit of happiness when they tell us we cannot live our life as we choose even when we are causing no harm to another person. How long will we allow them to make a joke out of the constitution and fools out of us? They cannot even come up with one good reason why it is illegal.
