Richardson Reliquishes Commerce Appointment

Governor Bill Richardson (D-NM) explained his reasons for resigning as Barack Obama's appointee for Secretary of Commerce during a press conference in Sante Fe, New Mexico today. Richardson faces a grand-jury investigation into whether he exchanged state contracts with CDR Financial Products for political contributions.

"As you all know I have asked the President-elect not to move forward with my nomination at this time," Richardson said.

A quick disclaimer followed: "I want to emphasize that I acted promptly and my administration acted properly too. A fair and impartial review of the facts will bear that out."

Watch the press conference here:

Richardson told the media that the timing of the investigation would likely slow his confirmation.

"Unfortunately the ongoing CDR investigation would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process and given the gravity of the economic situation the nation is facing I could not in good conscience act the president-elect and his administration to delay for one day the important work that needs to be done," he said.

"While this decision was a difficult one, I think it was the right thing to do," Richardson continued. "I made the decision over the weekend after exploring my options. I had hoped that the CDR investigation would have concluded in December with a clean bill of health for my administration. Since the investigation was not concluded in December and since the CDR investigation is ongoing I made the decision to withdrawal at the President-elect's nominee for Commerce Secretary rather than ask for a delay in my appointment."

"As you might expect I am disappointed in the turn of events," the dejected governor added. "Sometimes your own dreams and plans must take a back seat to what is best for the nation."

Richardson seemed optimistic that he would still serve in the Obama administration down the road. "The President-elect said in his statement yesterday that he looks forward to my future service in his administration," he said. "I still believe I have a lot to give iin public service."

One of your cutest posts ever Rowdy, don''t agree with you overall girl, but this one is right on! Under the wheels is where he is throwing them, no such thing as sticking up for his nominations. This is a developing pattern. BTW, I liked Richardons''s nomination, thought he would have been a great Secretary of Commerce, guess we''ll never know.

Mr. Richardson: We don''t know where you are headed but will you please take Roland Burris back to New Mexico with you. We here in Illinois don''t want this joker. He gave $14,000.00 to Gov. Blagojevich reelection campaign. He has an ego the size of Illinois. Thousands of citizens of Illinois voted against this man when he ran for poltical office here in Illinois. (He lost 5 times). Even our Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White won''t certifiy him..neither will we. Please take him from Illinois to New Mexico with you. Thank you for your consideration. Sorry to hear that you quit before you got started.

So Obama made ANOTHER bad choice of associates, imagine! How could we possibly have foreseen that? Well, maybe Wright, Ayers, Rezko, Farrakhan, Phleger, Blagojevich, etc., etc.! He''s appointing people no-one else would, to make them totally beholden to him, so they won''t rat him out later! Qualifications hell, Politics!

Why would anyone donate to a political campaign unless they wanted something? That is the only reason to donate to a campaign, and surely you need to negotiate the terms before paying the money.

Why would you vote for anyone unless you wanted something? We all vote selfishly, donate selfishly and find fault selfishly. Pretending otherwise is lying.

What we are seeing here is something we have seen so little of in the past eight years that the previous posters clearly do not recognize it. It is called "integrity". Richardson withdrew his name for a plum cabinet position, even though with the Democratic majority in Congress he *would* have been confirmed. He fully expects to be cleared (and almost certainly will be) but he is putting the needs of the country above his own career. That''s called "patriotism". The words "honesty", "dedication", and "noble" also come to mind. Can anyone imagine any of Bush`s cronies doing something like this?

I thought not.

Obama has a heck of a job ahead, cleaning up after the last eight years of dishonest, corrupt, *incompetent* misrule; but if Richardson is any indication, he knows how to pick good people who will hold themselves to high standards. The air is already smelling cleaner in Washington.
