Black Voters Played Role In Proposition 8

California’s Proposition 8, an amendment to the state constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, was a hard-fought contest and its passage is still not certain (this has been updated.

It appears that black voters played a significant role in its passage. According to exit polls, black turnout was up in California this year, constituting ten percent of the electorate there this year compared to six percent four years ago. According to the CBS News Election and Survey unit’s analysis, black voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of Prop. 8 – by a 70 percent to 30 percent margin. Hispanic voters overall favored the measure as well but only by a 53 percent to 47 percent margin. White voters were slightly on the side of approving it, 51 percent to 49 percent.

It is very sad what happened on Election Day. So many white people voted for Obama because he is the best candidate, and he will change this country. Many black people voted yes on prop 8. This is very hypocritical. How can black people vote to take away a minority groups'''' rights? The irony of it all is startling. I think that minorities need to take a good look at themselves and start thinking about how they can advance our society. Live and let live!

How is it hypocritical?

Plus, it only shows the majority of Americans are equally intelligent to see that demanding the rewriting others'' religious texts is pretty petty too.

Also, statistically speaking, 5% of GLBTs marry. GLBTs make up to 10% of the general population. 5% of 10% is SMALL. Just wait until profilers start ticking separations and divorces; the media has already announced some of those; including the first GLBT couple ever.

Maybe that''s why the general public and even many in the GLBT community don''t take it seriously*. Those who get it don''t keep it.

* for various reasons; either thinking marriage is outdated or being just as frivolous as heteros that divorce.

Racial profiling afoot, I see.

Where are the far-lefties denouncing this? They otherwise hate it with the tightie-righties profile certain types...

I couldn''t care less about profiling; demographics and commercialism aren''t always bad. It''s the politics I find more interesting.

If the fact that discrimination of ANY kind/ the rights of individuals (adults) were enforced nationally. There would be no need for a Proposition 8. To say one group denied the rights MORE than another, instead of TRUTH that America as a whole caused this rebuttal of Proposition 8 is poor, cowardly, instigative, divisive, false, and the work of IDIOTS!

Churches have no business inflicting their will upon every one, along with people that do not subscribe to a specific belief system. This is not England%u2026the United States was founded on the freedom from imposed religion. The Republican Party has fashioned the issue of Marriage to help promote their Conservative Agenda and Monetary Gains Politically by exploiting religion and ax exempt Church Organizations.

Children growing up in a "normal" family of man and woman prevailed? No.. this didn''t change the fact that there are millions of gay families containing children. They still cohabitate.. they just don''t get the same kind of tax breaks married folks do so gay parents have less money to feed their children. They also don''t get to make medical decisions for their partner should the blood relatives protest.. they don''t get automatic inheritance rights and the blood relatives just protest that as well and win a lot of the times.

You just don''t care, do you? This makes me hope another religion takes over this country so you can see what it feels like when they take something from you because they don''t believe in it. Then you''ll be all worried about that 1st amendment then.

*** need to keep their lifestyle behind close doors while you can openly preach your religion? I think it''s sad that you believe in an invisible man in the sky. I find your religion revolting and i''m sick of you guys knocking on my door at 7am on Saturday but you don''t see me trying to take your rights away. I''m a married woman btw but my little sister is gay. We went to private christian schools growing up. She was always this way. I ditched religion cause you''re hypocrites. You want to be free to practice what you please but you won''t let anyone else alone to live how they believe.

if marriage is indeed defined by religion then it cannot be recognized by the federal gov''t because that would be violating the 1st amendment. marriage brings certain tax breaks and privileges under the law. so if we only give those breaks to a certain group that is defined by religion, then the gov''t is favoring religion. you can''t do that in this country. you just cant. either these rights are for all or none at all.

what the religious don''t realize is that they''re going to screw up and end up getting the word "marriage" removed from teh law books altogether and civil unions for everybody--hetero or gay.

At least hate against children able to grow up in a normal home with a man and a woman prevailed. The only hate left are the protesters showing their anger at the churches that told their congregations to defend their beliefs.

This is not a civil rights issue! No one is denying them their civil rights,we''re just distinguishing that marriage is a union between a man and a woman. If homosexuals want to live together, visit each other in the hospital, ect, they have that ability, but marriage should NOT be redefined. Our nation was founded on certain principles, and faith, family and life have to be upheld. It is wrong to encourage a climate of redefining marriage. What kind of schhol, like the teacher in CA,would bus school children to attends a gay wedding? That is indoctrination of innocent children, and that''s the kind of force the homosexual community wants to have on our children.Keep waht you do behind closed doors, and don''t corrupt impressionable children.Your lifestyle is a choice, not a God given lifestyle.

no one should be given rights above that afforded to all other citizens because of choices they make.

I do not believe this article. It was those Republicans and the Focus on the Family Group that hindered this. Black People know the definition of bondage. Why would we hinder the Civil Rights of others ......... This is a Plant Story.

Not sure you want to hear this, but simply put being born African American, or any other racial minority, is something that cannot be changed - it is impossible. Any (and all) sexual activity/behavior is chosen, period. It is offensive to all the African Americans I know to compare the two situations. We all either choose to act on feelings we have or not to, but no one should be given rights above that afforded to all other citizens because of choices they make. Sorry, but that''''s the truth.

Assuming you are male: Would you have another male put theirs into yours, and/or vice-versa?

Why or why not?

Why would a person have such feelings in the first place? Or want to enact on them based on mutually met criteria? Especially if being known that way would result in summary violence aimed at them?

That''s all hypothetical, though I will agree that it''s not as much the feeling than how people act on their feelings. And it''s a certain appearance that does more detriment, of which they only have themselves to blame.

Republicans through their Christian Recruitment Center Churches will continue to rely on hate and discrimination issues in effort to muster support at the polls to promote their agenda.

The next proposition should possibly be to force Christian Churches to be evaluated as legitimate Religious Groups of Worship and Teaching or, Political Organizations surrendering their Church tax exempt status.

No one is asking for "special rights". Just the right to marry the consenting adult of choice. I had that right. I want my gay friends to have it.

The proposition was designed to confuse voters into believing a yes meant NO and no meant Yes.
This doesn%u2019t matter the Republican Party posed this same old wedge issue in effort to have Californians motivated to go to the Polls and, while they were there possibly vote in favor of the Republican Ticket down the line.

The Measure didn%u2019t improve John McCain%u2019s performance, but more of the lower Republican Candidates could%u2019ve been bolstered by the emotional fired proposition. This was a blatant violation of Church and State in effort to mobilize a voting block to assist in an anticipated meager outcome for the Republican Ticket Candidates.

I''m not African-American. I would like to hear a comment from a person from the Black Community regarding the following idea that goes along with this article.

Gay Activists stress this issue as a Civil Rights issue, meaning they were born homosexual. The African-American, or Black community is insulted by this method of political strategy.
