Memo Shows Obama Camp Planned To Hit McCain On Being "So Old"

(CBS)
From CBS News' Ryan Corsaro:

(KETTERING, OHIO) - While the Obama campaign denies using ageism as part of their campaign strategy, a document obtained by CBS News shows that they planned to use McCain’s last birthday in August to point out McCain’s age.

A memo reveals they planned to make an issue of his age beginning on Aug. 29, McCain’s 72nd birthday, “hoping to hit him on being so old.”

In a directive issued to “ALL” regions and markets, a message planning memo states “We’ll take the lead from the DNC/Chicago on these themes with a focus on Hurricane insurance/infrastructure on the 3rd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina on McCain’s 72nd B-day (also hoping to hit him on being so old too)”. That entry was listed under the dates "8/29-9/4", spanning the entire week of the Republican National Convention.

While it is not clear to what extent, if any, the Obama campaign carried out this effort, it is clear that it was encouraged.

Republicans have accused the Obama campaign of alluding to McCain’s age by using words like “erratic,” “stubborn,” and “lurching.”

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who supports Obama but does not have an integral role in the Obama campaign, made an off-hand joke recently implying that McCain wore “Depends” adult diapers.

But the McCain campaign cannot claim innocence in regards to alluding to age as an issue.

44-year-old Sarah Palin has pointed out that 65-year-old Joe Biden’s been in the U.S. Senate since she was in second grade.

McCain, using self-deprecation for laughs, has poked fun of his age at times on the trails.

And the 47-year-old Obama, using age to distance himself, points out that he was eight years old when Bill Ayers, who McCain’s camp calls a domestic terrorist, allegedly committed “unspeakable” acts of bombing and violence.

Ultimately, it has become clear that the prominent issue that has driven the campaign has not been age or even race – at least at this point – but an issue that effects all Americans: the economy.

The McCain campaign introduced the issue of age by constantly referring to Obama in May as a "young man" with "very little experience." McCain supporters counter that Obama first suggested that McCain had "lost his bearings," and they characterized the comment as a reference to his age. This is an argument that each voter will have to judge, since the charge is based on a comment that, at worst, obliquely refers to McCain''s age.

To characterize 47 as young is ludicrous. If elected, Obama would be older than Bill Clinton, JFK, Teddy Roosevelt, and Ulysses S. Grant were when they took office, and about 4.5 years younger than Lincoln, but (surprisingly) with more legislative experience.

dbor77. One never knows how much time one has left in this world. younger ''healthy'' people die all the time while older ''sick'' people hold on. I hope all of the candidates are around for a long time.

We may be the tolerant party, but we sure are not the party that will continue to lie down and be walked on by the most corrupt liars who belong to the most evil and vile party. After two elections that were not glowing in fairness and definitely not honesty. You could really say that we Democrats are not going to put up with cheating, lying, or hateful smears of the republican party that has gone to the dark side.

Unfortunately the younger voters are so nieve as to believe change is better than wisdom and experience. Hopefully the country will not be ruined before they mature enough to see the error of their ways.

Someone wrote earlier they think someone''s age is more important than there race. I totally agree, however, I think someone''s integrety, honesty and character are more important than any of those issues. Unfortunately Senator Obama has changed what he has said repeatedly, has friends and aquaintances that would cause anyone else not to be able to obtain a top secret clearance let alone be President and he will lie in any way possible to try to win the Presidency. For the sake of our country, I sincerely hope the American public is intelligent to see through his grade school level lies.

McCain is old. Is anyone not old at 72 years old? McCain has old ideas, old republican anti-regulation policies, old benefit the rich before anything else plans, and old thinking about being very miserly when it comes to average Americans. We need the younger, harder working, much more intelligent and honest Senator Obama. I am sick and tired of corrupt republicans who betray the country, lie constantly and harm more and more of us with their horrible actions.

(HONOLULU)(November 1, 2008) Internet powerhouse Andy Martin has ignited a firestorm in Hawai''i over Barack Obama''s bogus "original" birth certificate. Martin won a stunning victory Friday afternoon (October 31st) when the State of Hawai''i backed his assertion that there was an original, "typewritten, 1961" birth certificate, called a "Certificate of Live Birth" or "COLB" in Hawai''i, that no one has previously seen. Hawai''i officials retrieved and examined the document after Martin filed a lawsuit seeking access to the historic 1961 original.

Obama has falsely claimed to have placed the "original" on the Internet. Factcheck.org has falsely claimed to have seen this document and posted it on the Internet; that is not true. CNN has falsely ridiculed Martin.

Hawai''i officials have now refuted Obama''s false assertion.

Martin''s victory in Honolulu will roil the final weekend of the presidential campaign. Internet chatter is expected to explode as the issue moves to the front page over Saturday and Sunday. Swing voters may be swayed by the exposure that Obama has brazenly been lying to the American people. "We just lobbed a grenade into the final weekend of the presidential campaign," says Andy.

"I am ecstatic. I called Obama a liar. I called Factcheck.org ''ObamaLies.org.'' I said CNN was sloppy and lazy and wrong. And I was right. The State of Hawai''i has now backed me up.

I think a candidates older age is of much more importance then ones race. McCain has a lot of health problems.Palin has yet to release her medical records. I know she won''t because it will prove in there that she did not give birth to the youngest in the Palin clan.

and oh! that f,riggin war Bush started, its killed thousands, cost billions and McCain wants to extend it for 100 years. Now guys Iraq did NOT cause 911, nor did they have WMDs. No one has ever given a good logical, and true reason for our invasion and continued occupation of Iraq!

Whatever Obama''s "ism" is ,its OK with me,if this is Capitalism the Bush admin has been practicing, it isn''t working. More of Bush tax cuts for the rich and slashing capital gains taxes are what got us in this mess.

I''m for any kind of "ism" thats better than this!

Here''s commentary from the Oct. 14th British Spectator that is an eloquent synopsis: "You have to pinch yourself -- Barack Obama, a Marxist radical who all his life has been mentored by, sat at the feet of, worshiped with, befriended, endorsed the philosophy of, funded and been in turn funded, politically promoted and supported by a nexus comprising black power anti-white racists, Jew-haters, revolutionary Marxists, unrepentant former terrorists and Chicago mobsters, is on the verge of becoming President of the United States. And apparently it''s considered impolite to say so."
Let''s pray that the majority of Americans are not beguiled by this novice circus comic who is a slick talker when anchored to a teleprompter with a speech prepared by his ubiquitous handlers. Greg Neubeck

I was shocked this morning, when I heard Gov. Schwarzenegger say that Sen. Barack Obama should use some of the millions he collected in contributions to his Presidential campaign to pay the Wall Street Banks, financial firms, etc., to help with the financial crisis they created. For at least a month, I''ve heard nothing but accusations of "socialism" spew from Johnny McSame''s campaign. Now, that same campaign is calling for communism in its rankest form, when it wants to confiscate the wealth of individuals and spread it among individuals and financial institutions, which were too stupid to manage their own wealth. Come on Johnny McSame, you senile old phart, you were standing right next to the terminator, when he made these comments. I want to know whether you are a freaking communist like your campaign buddy. Obama/Biden 2008!!!

f you are willing to put a cancer ridden, elderly man in charge with an airhead in second position... you are willing to risk the future of our country based on either your ''''party first'''' mentallity or your racial bias. Either way, you are un-american.

Is McCain''s age a secret? Is it something Obama should be keeping a secret from him?
McCain''s campaign has used Obama''s age against him. McCain''s campaign has also accused Obama of a host of things that are false along with his juvenile name calling.

John McCain is an old man, so what? What is more important is that Republicons are into ruling. They have no interest in Governing. Their goal is to continue to rip off the U.S. Treasury and create of class of people that work to serve them.

The biggest problem with McShame''s age is the bimbo he''s got to replace him when he completely looses it. If you listen to his BS about how hard he had it in Hanoi, between rehearsals for his next propaganda session, he must be about ready to crack. If you think things were bad with shrub in charge, just wait till cariboo barbie gets her hands on the treasury department. First thing she''ll buy is a new hockey stick for the hockey puck she keeps handy.

Besscannon wonders: "Okay, then WHY put such untested hands at the helm?"

Simply because, even untested, Obama has more economic understanding than McCain. Smarts DO count.
