Will Palin’s Top-Dollar Wardrobe Threaten Her “Joe Six Pack” Image?

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(DAYTON, OHIO) - With her unfavorable ratings sinking to new lows, the last thing Sarah Palin needed was a story that could jeopardize her carefully crafted image as an “average hockey mom” who is the candidate of the “Joe six packs.”

So when Politico reported that the Republican National Committee had forked over more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize the candidate and her family, the McCain/Palin campaign turned to a tried and true target: the media.

"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it's remarkable that we're spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses,” Palin spokesperson Tracey Schmitt said. “It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”

But Palin’s clothing spending spree didn’t just raise eyebrows in the media. CBS News chief political consultant Marc Ambinder reports, “Republicans, RNC donors and at least one RNC staff member have e-mailed me tonight to share their utter (and not-for-attribution) disgust at the expenditures.”

John Edwards’ infamous $400 haircuts were a favorite target among the Republican base during the primaries, but it is unlikely that Palin’s core group of devoted supporters will turn away from the candidate they see as one of their own. Still, the fact that Palin’s handlers shopped for her at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue could take some of the sting out of her repeated assertion that she is not one of the “elites.”

If Sara Palin is the no-nonsense frugal hockey mom that she claims to be, why didn%u2019t say %u201CThanks but no thanks,%u201D to her handlers when they offered her a $150 K wardrobe and $11.4 K a week makeup artist, as she supposedly had told the U.S. Congress when they approved an earmark to Alaska for the infamous Bridge to Nowhere?

To spend that much money is obscene, unless it''s yours to begin with, and how come with the rich it never is? But anyway, have you looked at some old photos of Ms Palin? I could go into any Macy''s and come out looking ok. Not so Ms Palin. Really bad taste, no not just bad; her clothes were funny looking. So even though my favorite comment was the oldwhiteguy''s, I have this thought: It was always the plan that after the election, the clothes go to charity, they said. So if McCain/Palin win, godforbid, we get a frumpy v-p? This is the plan?

Wanna really have fun? Check out the Alaskan newspapers, a lot of those folks are just waiting for her to come back so they can tar and feather her.

It won''t hurt her or McCains image at all, we all knew they were both full of ***. And she would never ever just admit, okay, it was excessive. After all, she is inoccent of everything, even when found guilty. It''s a conspiracy!!!

I wonder if Palin likes McCain''s idea of donating the clothes to charity. It''s not fair! Cindy has really expensive clothes. How is poor Sarah going to compete with that? Why should some one who shops all the time at Walmart and is a regular hockey mom, be denied the opportunity to dress up in $150,000 worth of expensive clothes and make up? She needs something else besides winking and sarcasm to distract the crowd away from her vacuous mind.

To you b_b1959
The difference between Obama''s spending $2 million and the $150,00 spent on Palin is, Obama''s monies did not come from the DNC. so what he spends is the money he raised. Just maybe, if Palin had done something to bring in the big bucks then ther would not have been nothing to talk about.

It just enhances her image as someone with questionable judgment and a lack of common sense.

So after the election the clothes are going to GoodWill?
Does the GOP realize that 150k would save my house, pay all my debt AND allow me to buy health insurance...

I think the crux of this all goes to going to a high end store as opposed to a more ''Joe the Plumber'' store like JCPenney. You can get some very nice stuff at JCP and still look good. To be fair, I''ve not had a good impression of Palin from day one, I felt my party was clearly loosing it to make her a VP choice, especially after having a VERY strong VP like Cheney. I''m basically ''Joe the Mechanic'', I work 40+ hours weeks and buy clothes at discount stores for myself and my family. I pay my bills on time, have two 6 year old cars and have a solid mortgage. I play by the rules that aren''t followed by so many but I still get stuck for the bad guys by someone I thought was a frugal President. There is a reason people like myself feel let down by our GOP and until McCain and Palin open their star-struck eyes then they are likely to be defeated. :/

I wish that instead of clothing and making her stylish...I wish that she could just have the hand-me-downs from Cindy MCain''s outfits...

The money would be better spent educating Ms. Palin on the Government 101, you know she could have started with the three levels of GOV''T, (local, state, and Federal) move on the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT: EXECUTIVE BRANCH, THE LEGISLATIVE BRANCH and THE JUDICIAL BRANCH.

Addtionally, I wish the RNC would spend some money on her public speaking: I wish she would stop stating ALSO in every sentence, and GEE WHIZ..WITH ALL THE BIG MONEY REPUBLICANS HAVE WHY CANNOT THEY PROVIDE SOME OF THEIR PARTY MEMBERS TO SPEAK THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROPERLY. (GEROGE BUSH, Ms. PALIN) HOW COME THE BEST ORATORS AND THINKERS ARE ALWAYS IN THE DEMOCRACTIC PARTY? (Clintons, Kennedy''s, Cumos, etc...)

You think that in Alaska all they wear is flannel? Get real.

I live in California, do you think we all wear bathing suits, gauze and flip flops?

What matters to me is that McCain pandered to the American women by choosing Palin, so she should appear to me more of the everyday woman, not someone who took the money and ran before the economy crashed!
Cindy McPain is cleary a wealthy woman who does not ever tone her attire down into the normal, JOEsephine; wife of Joe the Plumber.

You have to look exceptionally good when you can''t articulate a full, complete thought on the most basic of topics. And when your speech is so doggone, golly gee, gosh *** annoying.

And remember, Palin has to keep up with Cindy McCain''s high dollar wardrobe. I would have been more impressed with store brands instead of designer labels, but maybe $150K isn''t all that much in a national election. Anyway, I''m more turned off by her behavior, her tone, and her lack of knowledge of basic civics.

As far as outrage over Obama spending 600M...he raised it. McCain had the same chance to raise his own funds but he counted on the stealth PACs to come to his rescue. Obama agreed to accept public funding only if McCain agreed to rein in the 527s and stealths...so the opportunity was there. And national elections average around $500M per candidate, so he''s spot on.

It didn''t take Palin''s wardrobe to threaten her image. Her image was ruined the moment she opened her mouth candidly to answer very basic questions to the press and showed how little she really knew of the world, politics and the job she''d assume if McCain was elected. Now she has been relegated to the title McCain''s Booth Babe, selling a campaign with *** to the Joe Six-Packs she so easily relates to. That is why she needed almost $5000 in makeup and hairstyling. After all Paris Hilton has spent that much on her dogs accessories, why can''t McCain as well?

I think this confirms Palin''s hockey mom status. I''d be more concerned if she already owned the extensive wardrobe. I''ll admit that the RNC blew it with how they handled the purchases, but a VP candidate does need to look good, and in every climate across the country. Let''s face it, woman can''t wear the same suit over and over again.

I don''t understand why no one is outraged about the estimated $600 million Obama will be spending on his campaign.

"Meanwhile, the Chicago Tribune reports that Barack Obama%u2019s outdoor election night party in Chicago will cost about $2 million, paid for by the campaign. The event will be held in and around the city%u2019s Grant Park."

Yep, Palin really has our money in mind...actually in her wallet! That would pay off my mortgage, the government buy-out should have been distributed among US citizens - we would have paid off our bills, put money back into the banks and poured a lot back into the economy...instead we are paying for others luxuries!
