In Far-Reaching Speech, Palin Vows To Advocate For Women Worldwide

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

(LAS VEGAS) - In the days after Sarah Palin was introduced as John McCain’s running mate in late August, her stump speeches were peppered with allusions to the historic nature of her candidacy. Over time, Palin’s allusions to “breaking the glass ceiling” for women became less and less frequent as she focused on other topics.

But at a rally here today, the Alaska governor’s stump speech was dominated by women’s issues, as she was joined on stage by five female leaders.

“And if I’m given the honor of serving you in the White House, I intend to advance that creed in our own nation and beyond because across the world, there are still places where women are subjugated and persecuted as they were in Afghanistan, places we’re they’re bullied and brutalized and murdered in honor killings, places where women are sold like commodities in the nightmare world of the sex trade, and places where baby girls are unwelcome as a matter of state policy and their mothers are forced to have abortions,” Palin said.

“Now no one person, no one leader, can bring an end to all of those ills, to all of the injustices inflicting upon women, but I can promise you this, if I am elected, these women, too, will have an advocate and a defender in the 47th vice president of the United States.”

Palin called the Democratic ticket “presumptuous” for assuming they would win the women’s vote and questioned Barack Obama for not making Hillary Clinton his running mate.

“When it came time for choosing some how Barack Obama just couldn't bring himself to pick the woman who got 18 million votes in his primary and that seems to be too familiar a story isn't it?” she said. “How it is for so many American women that the qualifications are there, but for some reason the promotion never comes. There is always some long explanation for why they got passed over or some unseen barrier, some excuse and that's just one of the things I so admire about John McCain he is not someone who makes excuses."

Palin said that Obama “talks a good game” about equal pay for women, but his record does not match his rhetoric.

“According to the Senate pay roll records women on his own staff get just 83 cents for every dollar that the men get,” Palin said. “That's $9,000 less every year that he pays the guys.

“Does he think that the women aren’t working as hard? Does he think that they are 17 percent less productive? And Barack Obama cant say that this is just the way that its always been done around the Capitol, because I know one senator who actually does pay equal wages for equal work, Sen. John McCain.”

Obama senior advisor Anita Dunn issued the following response: “Senator Obama has fought for equal pay for an equal day's work, while Senator McCain has suggested that women don't get equal pay because they need more education and training. While Senator Obama has proposed a plan to help working women, the McCain-Palin campaign offers just more negative attacks and distortions.”

Sarah has made it abundantly clear she cares only for Republican women with a special affinity for those in small towns. The rest of us are screwed.

Sarah Palin thinks she''s heading the ticket. Check the first line: %u201CAnd if I%u2019m given the honor of serving you in the White House, I intend to advance that creed in our own nation...

Sarah Palin thinks she''s running for President. She''s either ignorant, delusional, or has big plans for 2012 even before the McCain campaign is dead and buried.

Thanks but no thanks, Gov. Sarah Palin. Although I am only a refugee from a third world war-torn country with only a Master degree from UC Berkeley, I am not as ignorant of national issues and not as narrow-minded as you. I would be very ashamed if you want to represent me. You are no Hillary Clinton!

Well, it would be great if she could advance the cause of women. Unfortunately, I don''t see her making the White House. Mostly because she is not qualified to be Veep because she is not qualified to be President should the front office be vacated in some untimely way.

I do not want THIS woman advocating for me. I do not identify with her in ANY way - other than being the mother of 5 children. I would never haul an infant into huge, noisy, germ-filed auditoriums on a daily basis and take my children out of school to follow me on a hectic campaign tour. And someone needs to inform John McCain that Downs Syndrome and Autism are special needs - but they are NOT the same. I can''t help but wonder just how much Sarah Palin knows about special needs children and their needs.

OneAmerican7 don''t you ever get tired of being wrong, like the zombie ticket of McCain/Palin? Obama co-sponsored the Illinois Equal Pay Act, allowing thousands more women protection from pay discrimination in that state. Sadly, a federal law is needed to ensure Equal Pay for women nationwide...but wait, there was a federal Fair Pay Act that your hero McCain helped defeat in April 2008. His reasons - women need more training and networking - "Ledbetter was decided properly". I guess when you have 7 houses and a wife who wears $300,000 outfits to rallies, you lose touch with what matters to Americans the most.

As far as Hillary, Obama knew she had too much baggage to bring on the train. Obama doesn''t make impulse decisions based on gimmicky whims. Palin brings nothing but flash to the campaign, and that light is one bulb short of blowing the fusebox.

Palin cannot advocate for women worldwide, and she certainly cannot speak for most. She identifies as a white, middle-class, Christian, conservative woman. And by doing so, she is "othering" all women who do not fall into her social location. Women of color, multiracial women, working class women, lesbians, women who aren%u2019t Christian, etc. feel disconnected from this %u201Ceveryday hockeymom%u201D meme. She also suggests that women who don%u2019t vote for her or don%u2019t %u201Csupport%u201D her will go to hell, warping the words of respected former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. This is very unfeminist. This is not representing all women. This is NOT who and what women want or need or will believe is going to be "representing" them.

Sarah Palin needs to get real. She has repeatedly stabbed American women in the back with idiotic policies like allowing rape victims in the small town she was in charge of to be forced to pay law enforcement officials to investigate the crime. She admittedly fired Monegan because of "budget disagreements". Specifically, she didn''t like that he was trying to get funding for a sexual assault initiative aimed at helping women who are the victims of violent *** crimes. Alaska has one of the highest incidents of violence against women of any state, and apparently Palin is fine with that and doesn%u2019t want to fund helping victims, although she%u2019s happy to pour millions into ill-conceived sports complex. She also believes that the government should force girls and women who are raped to give birth to the rapists child regardless of circumstance. McCain opposes equal pay for women doing equal work.

Obama and Biden, on the other hand, have clear cut records of supporting women''s right. They have been champions of women''s causes and that is why no self-respecting woman would ever vote for John McCain or Sarah Palin. I really wish Palin would stop comparing herself to Hillary Clinton. It''s an insult to Hillary and to women everywhere. Hillary stood up for women, Sarah only stands up for own petty interests.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget USBudgetWatch.org is sponsored by the Pew Charitable Trust. This trust was established by guess who - adult children of the Sun Oil Company giant, Joseph Pew. Although not a stealth PAC, still a politically conservative group run by Republicans business executives and professionals. No plumbers, but who knows, Joe might end up on their board of directors. Of course they have anti-Obama propaganda on their websites.

Sarah Palin is immoral and unethical. I don''t believe the average American woman aspires to be either. I heard, by the way, an interview with Alaskan moms of a special needs children who said that, as govenor, Palin does less than nothing for these children. The only thing I can see that Palin shows commitment to is to personally benefit from being in positions of power. How do the Palins square secession with election to high office? And lastly, she told a friend just after becoming mayor that she wanted to be president. My question would be: Then why didn''t she get ready, do some reading, study, try to learn about the office and what it required?

John Mccain has made a big deal out of not personally requestion earmarks, trying to clear his name after he was involved in one of the largest heists (fleecing) on the American People in history. (Keating 5 and the savings and loan scandal that cost taxpayers billions).
However John Mccain has voted for billions of dollars of earmarks, so what is the difference?

There is a huge amount of publicity about Sarah Palin and she%u2019s definitely no typical woman. Yet there is a lot about her that people don%u2019t know about. from cannonfire;
According to the source, Joe Biden is having a secret affair with a rather well-known lady, whom I will call L. The lady has had several liaisons with the celebrated. The affair may soon be revealed by the major media -- although I do not know if that revelation will happen before or after the election.

I''m not sure how to pursue the matter, or even if I should. I like Joe Biden. I like him a hell of a lot more than I like Obama or McCain. Frankly, if Biden were at the top of the ticket, I would not be writing this post. I''d allow someone else to make public his private sins.

But he''s not at the top of the ticket, and I''m no fan of the guy who is.

Obama may come into some serious trouble after the election. As several news stories out of Chicago have made clear, Obama''s political patron, crime boss Tony Rezko, is singing like Boris Christoff in a hot shower. Many believe that the lyrics mention Barack Obama. Conceivably, that process could keep Obama out of the Oval Office even if he wins the election. Which would give the presidency to Biden. Which would be fine by me.

But...what about L

"Palin has charged the state $21,012 for her three daughters'' 64 one-way and 12 round-trip commercial flights since she took office in December 2006. In some other cases, she has charged the state for hotel rooms for the girls.

Alaska law does not specifically address expenses for a governor''s children. The law allows for payment of expenses for anyone conducting official state business.

The state is already reviewing nearly $17,000 in per diem payments to Palin for more than 300 nights she slept at her own home, 40 miles from her satellite office in Anchorage."

Right! "Serving you in the White House...". I do not believe that Gov. Palin has received her party''s nomination to serve in the White House. If I''m wrong, then those of us who fought for equal rights, like our grandmothers and greatgrandmothers before us fought for the right to vote, will be eternally subjugated and persecuted by far-right wing conservatives intent on seeing us barefoot and pregnant without the right to abort a pregnacy that threatens our lives.

We women do not need a self revelatory idiot advocating for us. Palin needs to clean her own house first. She can start by actually raising her children, reining in her daughter and proceed to actually coming clean about who built her home, her per diem expenses and her ethics violations. Then and only then can she try to educate herself on issues and try to address them.

Above all else, get an elocution, diction and grammar coach to give herself a leg up in trying to create coherent sentences.

Obama''s entering into real estate deals with Rezko, while it was public knowledge that he was under investigation for funneling illegal contributions to Illinois politicians, was not a "boneheaded" move, it was motivated by pure greed. While knowing that he would get caught up in a major scandal, Obama went ahead with the deal because he and his wife wanted that mansion, with four fireplaces, six bathrooms, and a wine cellar, period.

It seems like every day something new comes out about Palin. The first time I heard her open her mouth I knew she was a liar and a scammer. If some of the things that she has been proven to have done were done by Michelle Obama there would be such a fire storm that it would take 25 fire departments to contain it. At first, I thought well, she did this but anyone can make a mistake but it just keeps coming. She is the exact opposite of what women need to represent them. She has no respect for women unless they are "her kind" and doesn''t give a dam about regular women. And her little slip of the tongue speaks volumes about her true goal. She thinks she belongs in the White House but in reality she belongs in the "big house."

Palin''s fashion budget for several weeks was more than four times the median salary of an American plumber ($37,514).

To put it another way: Palin received more valuable clothes in one month than the average American household spends on clothes in 80 years.

To put it in even blunter terms: her clothes were the cost of health care for 15 or so people.

CONGRATS to CBS for practicing journalism today, it''s refreshing.

Governor Palin presents a powerful argument in the advocacy of Women Worldwide.

She is the only voice I''ve heard in this Election for Women who are being abused in China, the Middle East and Latin Worlds. This is a huge issues that Rachel Maddow and Gloria Steinem have completely ignored in their knee jerk attacks on the GOP Ticket. Thanks for standing-up for the girls, Gov. Palin.

Today''s DemoCRAP TALKING BASH will no doubt follow my message. How much did Barack spend on the TV Ads you have to endure today? 15 Million, 20 Million? Will that go to a Charity Auction like Sarah Palin''s wardrobe?

Today''s DemoCRAP TALKING BASH will no doubt follow my message. How much did Barack spend on the TV Ads you have to endure today? 15 Million, 20 Million? Will that go to a Charity Auction like Sarah Palin''s wardrobe?

CONGRATS to CBS for practicing journalism today, it''s refreshing.

Governor Palin presents a powerful argument in the advocacy of Women Worldwide.

She is the only voice I''ve heard in this Election for Women who are being abused in China, the Middle East and Latin Worlds. This is a huge issues that Rachel Maddow and Gloria Steinem have completely ignored in their knee jerk attacks on the GOP Ticket. Thanks for standing-up for the girls, Gov. Palin.

Obama''s campaign is spending their campaign dollars APPROPRIATELY - the money was donated specifically for the purpose of things such as advertising.

The RNC donations - which is PUBLIC money - were not to outfit Palin and her family. That money was to be used for things such as ads. The campaign''s big problem was NOT HAVING enough money to advertise on the same capacity as the Democrats.
