Obama Preps For Tonight's Debate

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

(NASHVILLE, TENN.) Barack Obama is heading to the debate tonight ready to fight, according to campaign aides, but they add he will not be the first to throw a punch.

“We’re going to talk about the issues that are important to the American people, but we’re prepared for a very aggressive debate,” Obama campaign chief strategist David Axelrod said on the flight to Nashville.

“The question is: Which John McCain does he bring?” spokeswoman Jen Psaki asked this morning, adding, “If John McCain wants to attack, we will respond accordingly.”

Obama has spent the last two and a half days of “rigorous” debate prep at a mountain resort in Ashville, N.C. Advisers Anita Dunn, David Axelrod, and Robert Gibbs were all on hand to prep the Democratic nominee, with Washington, D.C. lawyer Greg Craig reprising his role as McCain. Advisers focused more on the town hall format of debate, rather than specific issues.

“He doesn’t have to relearn a message,” Axelrod said.

While he may not have had to prep on the issues, Obama did prepare to answer questions that McCain may raise about his character or associations, including his ties to Weather Underground founder William Ayers. Obama also prepared to discuss the McCain's Keating Five scandal, which Axelrod said is not an abstract issue.

“The Keating case is pretty germane to the discussion we’re having right now,” Axelrod argued, adding that the scandal was an example of McCain’s position on regulation of financial institutions.

Early this morning, the campaign was already downplaying expectations for debate.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in an e-mail, “When it comes to sheer format, we enter today’s debate the decided underdog. John McCain does extremely well in town hall settings. It’s been his favorite format throughout his career and we think that he will of course do very well.”

Hello "ajitraj":

Obama isn''t friends with any terrorist. (If you are referring to Bill Ayers, having a working relationship with someone on a Republican funded, organized, and populated board isn''t exactly being "friends" with them)

John McCain is *personal* friends with felons. A felon who has swindled billions from American taxpayers - Charles Keating. A felon at the center of Watergate - G. Gordon Libby. And finally, an admitted murderer during the civil rights movement.

Sarah Palin''s husband, Todd, used to be the MEMBER of a secessionist group - the AIP - with ties to Iran.

Get your facts straight. I don''t like Obama very much, but the outright lies of the McCain campaign is really starting to get to me. And Obama is much better on the economy, which directly affects me and my family.

If McCain does ask his "fellow Americans, do you feel that''s it''s OK to be friends with a terrorist?", I expect McCain to also answer as Sarah Palin has been sleeping with the enemy since 1995. Her husband, Todd Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) from 1995 -2002. The AIP motto includes Alaska SECESSION from the United States. AIP founder Joe Vogler stated "I''m an Alaskan, not an American, I''ve got no use for America or her damned institutions. The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American governemtn. And, I won''t be buried under her damned flag." In 2008 Sarah Palin addressed the AIP convention and said " keep up the good work." So much for "Country First" McCain. Looks like it''s "Alaska First". Talk about UNPATRIOTIC!

John McCain has LOST ALL HONOR.

He is now IN THE SAME BED WITH KARL ROVE and the rest of the REPUBLICAN SLIME MACHINE that he once said he "detested".

John McCain has NO HONOR left.

McCain is making a call for all bigots and hate-mongers to join his parade of slime. He is desperate and it is a personal call to jihad for his campaign. And they are coming out of the woodwork, every right wing nut in the country is answering the call and coming up with the smear and fear garbage that McCain is begging them for. McCain is not a leader. He displays the same yellow stripe down his back that he displayed when he ratted on his Keating Five comrades to escape prosecution. Some crazy person even yelled Kill Him! at a Florida rally where Palin called Obama a terrorist- shades of the Nazi hate rallies. McCain is bringing great shame on the electoral process and his erratic behavior makes it clear he is not qualified to be president any more than his junkyard dog running mate.

John McCain should ask one question to the Amercian people tonight:

My fellow Americans,

Do you feel that it is OK to be friends with a terrorist?

From FDR, to JFK to Reagan, have you heard or like to have your president to be friends with a terrorist?

Okay, Obama is a lawyer and Biden is a lawyer. Isn''t it the lawyers that messed this whole country up in the first place, including all the ones we have there now in office? That''s the single least trusted profession in the country according to polls for the last 10 years, and yet we have naive people all over the country thinking (it''s a miracle - they are going to tell the truth now?). Just because they say they will do something - DOESN''T mean they will! They get paid high salaries to lie professionally and twist words so you can''t understand what they are saying. Then they deceive people into thinking they sound so intelligent, so they get elected. WOW - That''s really what we need in office right now. What a JOKE! Let''s see a list of how they have ever helped you. But please start by listing the Bill you got from them. They are good at taking your money - just where they belong - in Washington. People wake up!
