McCain Promises More Aggressive Debate Tonight

(CBS)

From CBS News’ John Bentley:

(NASHVILLE, TENN.) – “When are you going to take the gloves off and just go at him?” John McCain was asked by a frustrated supporter at a town hall earlier this week.

“How about next Tuesday?” McCain replied, referring to tonight’s debate here, where both candidates have promised a gloves-dropping performance. At the last debate a week and a half ago, both candidates avoided engaging with each other and instead stuck to their talking points. That may change tonight, as McCain gave a preview of his likely strategy against Barack Obama yesterday, when he sought to portray him as a politician who has never adequately explained his decisions or how he would run the country.

“Who is the real Sen. Obama? Is he the candidate who promises to cut middle class taxes, or the politician who voted to raise middle class taxes? Is he the candidate who talks about regulation or the politician who took money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and turned a blind eye as they ran our economy into a ditch? Which one is it?” McCain said. “Is he the candidate who promises change, or is he the politician who has bought into everything that is wrong with Washington? And he’s bought into it big time. We can't change the system with someone who's never fought the system.”

Tonight’s debate is in a town hall style format, where members of the audience ask the candidates questions. McCain has held over a hundred of these types of meetings on the campaign trail, and he is more comfortable doing town hall meetings than delivering policy speeches or speaking at rallies. That has not escaped the notice of the Obama campaign, who issued a memo this morning that tried to lower expectations for their candidate.

“John McCain does extremely well in town hall settings. It’s been his favorite format throughout his career and we think that he will of course do very well,” wrote Obama press secretary Bill Burton, but who also added that they expect a more aggressive opponent. “If all he does is attack Barack Obama, as he’s said he’ll do, it will be yet another colossal missed opportunity. In the face of those attacks, Barack Obama will continue to offer steady leadership, and talk about his plan to give real relief to the middle class and create good jobs here in America.”

When will McCain and Palin stop laughing and smiling when their supporters yell "Kill him" and "Terrorist"?

True American leaders do not stand by while people spew hatred like this. We have not seen a world leader''s major political party act like this since Nazi Germany.

It''s disgusting that McCain and Palin let this behavior go on right in front of them. Far worse that they smile and laugh about it.

See link below where McCain is quoted as saying, "It doesn''t take a lot of intelligence to intercept a surface to-air missile."

Mccain is "a day late and a dollar short"---he looks pathetic in this last gasp. Politically, this will cheer the GOP''s extremist mad-dog hater base and bother or insult the moderate base. Independents will likey be turned off, and Obama''s supporters will just be all the more determined that they hae chosen correctly.

If mccain came out tonight with REAL TALK about the ECONOMY that made sense, we would all be stunned and the undecideds would listen to what he has to say. this feeble slander attempt is OLD NEWS ---WE''VE HEARD IT AND PROCESSED IT IN THE PRIMARIES. OBAMA SURVIVED IT JUST FINE. this kind of knee-jerk predictable slander just leaves it status-quo, or perhaps even helps Obama.

Mccain''s advisors are inept, and mccain quit listening to the people and to his instincts. The result if failure.

I agree with you... The real John McCain is nasty and diversive... and when he ramps up his campaign rhetoric during his rallies... and he allows people in the crowd to reply with shouts of "TERRORIST" when referring to Obama... and McCain barely hesitates but to show a look of surprise... then returns to his slander speech.

both McCain''s actions and the actions of the shouting fanatic should be neither supported or condoned.

that behavior is an example of McCain''s bad judgment.

I don''t want that kind of experience in the White House.

McCain and Palin tried to attack Obama on the issues. That failed. McCain and Palin tried to attack Obama himself. That failed. Now McCain and Palin are trying to attack people that Obama knows. Consider that Obama has been in public service for decades and has probably encountered tens of thousands of people. All that McCain can come up with are a handful of names? Let''s look at McCain and Palin.
Sarah Palin''s husband was a member of a political group that wanted Alaska to secede from the union. How is that for patriotic? Her own teenage daughter was knocked up out of wedlock. How is that for family values? John McCain cheated on his first wife. How is that for honorable? John McCain was part of the Keating 5 - how is that for trustworthy? Note that "intelligence" in politics refers to "spy information", not smartness.

It bothers me more that Obama actually does have ties to terrorists. Substance to me has more importance than etiquette.

McCain and MooseMunch are shills for Big Oil, Wall Street, and Military Contractors. I do not see any change from what we%u2019ve already experienced under the current Conservative Administration. Americans should be concerned about what will be in their better interests such as Jobs, Health Care, Credit, fair pricing for goods and services like gasoline, food and housing.

And, maybe a little less corruption in our government?

See who''s responsible - in their own words.

Obama/Ayers: Let''s not overlook ANNENBERG! They served on the Annenberg board together, overseeing the expenditure of millions of dollars. The records are still "unavailable". Meantime, whenever Obama is criticized he refers to his "fight the smears" website, which cites as its only source of facts, the FACTCHECK.ORG website... which is run by Annenberg! Umm, what does that say about credibility?

Obama/ACORN: ACORN is the very definition of a "community organizer" and the ties between Obama and ACORN are abundant. ACORN has been tied to so much voter fraud that they ought to be investigated under RICO! The tag line to hammer home: ACORN: Where you''re never too dead to vote twice!

And the Keating 5 as Obama''s response to Ayers???

There were 5 Senators investigated. Three Senators were determined to have acted improperly%u2026 Cranston (D), Riegle (D) and DeConcini (D). The other two Senators were found to have done nothing improper and received no censure. Senators John Glenn (American Hero & Astronaut) and John McCain (American Hero and POW) were both criticized for poor judgment for attending meetings, but neither was considered to have had significant involvement, and neither was deemed to have committed impropriety, violation of law or violation of Senate Rules.

The verdict is in. At a time when the terrible, terrible state of the economy is causing US citizens such as the guy in California to kill this morning his wife, three children, mother-in-law and self, why do we continue to participate in mudslinging. The state of our economy is a very serious and grave issue at this time. We can not waste time engaging in mudslinging that the only purpose it serves is to divert the very, very serious issues of the economy, that our country is faced with. I think we as Americans are very capable of determining one%u2019s character, thats our job and we don%u2019t need any help in accomplishing it. Please this is our time (the American People), we have a decision to make on Nov 4, which is only weeks away. We would ask that the candidates not waste any more of our time trying to influence the us whether or not someones character is upstanding, we can do that. What we wish would be done is for the candidates to take time and share a strategy dealing with the economy with us that we don%u2019t loose anymore people as we already have in California to collateral damage.

When are the Obama people going to censure this person:
Sandra Bernhard%u2019s recent cracks about Gov. Sarah Palin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin are no laughing matter, according to a Boston women%u2019s shelter.

Officials at Rosie%u2019s Place cut the comedian as a headliner from an annual benefit after she joked that Palin would be %u201Cgang-raped by my big black brothers%u201D if she ever visited New York City.

John McCain and Sarah Palin, please explain to the American people that are losing their homes, their jobs, their pensions and their health care, along with many elderly people who can no longer stretch their dollars to get enough to eat, exactly how holding your hateful KLAN rallies is going to help them!

GUTTER POLITICS OF MCCAIN/PALIN WON''T WORK THIS TIME:

Those in 11 glass houses should not throw stones or mud:....

1) McCain in his own book admits he was part of the "KEATING FIVE" fiasco, and was WRONG for his ethical violations;

2) Palin chastises Obama for sitting through a minister''s nonsensical sermons, while IGNORING BEING EXORCISED BY HER WITCH-DOCTOR Minister Thomas Muthee and claiming as a Pentecostal that she believes "END OF DAYS" will happen soon;

3) Palin chastises Obama about an Ayers character who did HIS actions when OBAMA was only 8 years old and as an adult has said Ayers was wrong; WHILE PALIN as an ADULT has vigorously supported, and her husband formally joined as well, the SECESSIONIST MOVEMENT of the Alaska Independence Party---She also gave them aid and comfort as recently as six months ago for their AIG convention (check YouTube)---Even Abraham Lincoln had to fight a Civil War to prevent such secessionist treason activities when States tried to leave the U.S. Union;

4) McCain still has the FANNIE MAE and FREDDIE MAC lobbyists running his campaign---THEY ARE PURSUING THE VERY FAILED POLICIES of his old Savings and Loan BILLIONS of dollars fiasco and NOW HIS ADVOCATED CONTINUED failed economic policies for the current financial, bank and mortgage TRILLION dollar meltdown.

Enough of this failed Republican gutter politics.

IT''s TIME TO PUT OBAMA and BIDEN TO WORK FOR ALL AMERICA!!!

What''s the difference between the Alaskan secessionist party and the ACORN organization to help people get mortgages?
1. Palin''s husband was a member of the secessionist party whose intention and hope is to end Alaska''s statehood in the USA and put it to a vote whether to become a new nation or a commonwealth or a territory or a state.
2. ACORN helps poor people get homes.

Hmmmm.

McCain says: "The economy is not my strong suit."

BUT THIS ELECTION IS ABOUT THE ECONOMY:

1) IT''S THE ECONOMY!!!

2) IT''S JOBS, WHICH IS THE ECONOMY!!!

3) IT''S HEALTHCARE, WHICH IS THE ECONOMY!!!

4) IT''S GIVE IRAQ BACK TO IRAQIS, WHICH IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE ECONOMY!!!

5) IT''S IMPROVED INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS WITH OUR ALLIES AND OUR WORLD STANDING, WHICH IS THE BIGGEST LINK TO THE ECONOMY!!!

6) IT''S IMPROVING THE DOLLAR IN THE WORLD, WHICH IS THE ECONOMY!!!

===Now which part of this don''t you understand when you VOTE????

---IT''S THE ECONOMY!!!!

....and it''s time to VOTE OBAMA AND BIDEN IN ''08!!!

McCain was tied to the Iran Conta scandal through a group linked to Nazis.

Excerpted From AP: October 7, 2008

"In the 1980s, McCain served on the advisory board to the U.S. chapter of an international group linked to ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The U.S. Council for World Freedom aided rebels trying to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua. That landed the group in the middle of the Iran-Contra affair and in legal trouble with the Internal Revenue Service, which revoked the charitable organization''s tax exemption. The council created by retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub was the U.S. chapter of the World Anti-Communist League, an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. Singlaub said McCain was a supporter. McCain has said he resigned from the council in 1984 but Singlaub does not recall any McCain resignation in 1984 or May 1986. Nor does Joyce Downey, who oversaw the group''s day-to-day activities."
