Fla. Sheriff Plays The “Hussein” Card At Palin Event; Campaign Calls Remark “Inappropriate”

(CBS)
Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott took the stage moments ago as one of the introductory speakers at a rally here for Sarah Palin. After delivering brief remarks in support of Palin, Sheriff Scott flipped the switch and used Barack Obama’s middle name in order to incite the crowd of thousands of people who have already gathered here.
“On Nov. 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened,” the law enforcement officer said.
UPDATE: Palin campaign spokesperson Tracey Schmitt issued the following statement on Sherriff Scott’s remarks: “We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character, and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November.”
According to his web site, Scott became sheriff in 2005.
“People could say running for sheriff took either courage, ignorance, or a combination of both,” Scott said on the web site.
Many of the thousands of people in attendance roared their approval at Sheriff Scott’s dig at the Democratic nominee, whose Kenyan father shared the same exact name as his son.
After Sheriff Scott left the podium, local radio host Mandy Connell took the stage next. She too drew a loud ovation when she said Obama “hangs around with terrorists.”

See all 335 CommentsRemember the people who used to make fun of your elementary school classmates who had funny names (or names they could twist into something funny)?
They all became Republican political "strategists" for Bush and McCain.
I hope Floridians kick this guys azz out.
Hussein is his middle name. It''s a fact. Why is it that these news channels jump on something like this in his defense, when they are constantly attacking McCain and Palin. It''s ridiculous.
recall governor Palin...
They want to sling SLIME then wash their hands of it.
What is the net effect? They get their hits in, then say "oh, we did not mean it." Meanwhile, the media covers the "hussein" story and the Republicans get the slime spread out through the country.
Nothing but trash.
We need jobs, not trash.
We need healthcare, not trash.
We need our retirement funds, not trash.

In response to kittnlover, of course it''s his middle name, but he generally doesn''t use it so when people use it they are simply bringing it up to highlight his alleged muslim roots. When George Bush''s father was running for President, his campaign referred to one of his challengers as ''Pierre du Pont'', which was his full name but he went by ''Pete''. It''s as if we all referred to McCain as John Sidney McCain in an attempt to feminize him because Sidney is a girls'' name now.
You are supposed to quake in fear, and hate everyone ane everything because this hate-crazed woman palin tells you to. She is so full of hatred and venom and fearmongering that she will stop at nothing for power. What a shocking and repulsive set of values she has. Is this going to infect the whole GOP? aren;t there some decent people in GOP who are going to say something before she defames and destroys your party?
Look at the polls---people DESPISE THE GOP TICKET. PALIN DID IT HER WAY, DIDN''T SHE? SHE IS TAKING MCCAIN DOWN, AND RUNNING THE SHOW JUST THE WAY SHE WANTS TO.
mccain/palin are HATE
Obama is HOPE
You want to talk gestapo?
Then look at what The Glorious Leader Obama was trying to do in Missouri by using law enforcement to intimidate anyone running an ant-Obama ad with threats of lawsuits.
Try that for gestapo tactics.
You said: His name is Barack Hussein Obama. Hussein is his middle name. It''''s a fact. Why is it that these news channels jump on something like this in his defense, when they are constantly attacking McCain and Palin. It''''s ridiculous.

Because it''s meant to scare people. Do you hear the Obama campaign emphasizing the middle names of the GOP: "John SIDNEY McCain" or "Sarah LOUISE Palin?" And do the GOP mention Joe Biden''s middle name? The answer, of course, to all three candidates with good ole ''Merican sounding names is no.
While we''ve neatly tip-toed around it, Sarah is using language that is inappropriate. While it''s been interesting watching "anything goes" without rebuttal, it needs to stop.
I think American women, especially white American women need to say, "Enough". Stop using your status as a white woman, to say anything. Say what you have to say and fit within cultural norms!
Where are all the elected GOP women? Cat got your tongues?
You must submit to the same scrutiny as the men. Enough with word choice and manner of delivery.
So, he is named Barack Hussein Obama? There are thousands of men who are doctors, lawyers, clergymen, every day folks who are also named Hussein. What is disgraceful about the name?
Missouri is all about GOP voter suppression.
Let people vote.

When I looked at my 401K statement this morning, it''s funny Obama''s middle name didn''t cross my mind but the names Bush and McCain most certainly did.

Good comment. Thank you!
what a stupid country we have become to have such people look for our safety.
This idiot belongs in a mental hospital.
God must really dislike us to bless our citizens with such an incredible level of ignorance.
Why would America REWARD complete Republican failure ?
We wont.
Drawing the parallels between the Republican party and well the "blackshirt" party is scary.
And than they try to pin the label terrorist to Obama?
How incredibly stupid and evil the republicans must be.
The GOP race baiters don%u2019t get it! We democrats aren%u2019t upset that you use his middle name. We%u2019re upset why you use his middle name. It is an attempt to bolster the credibility of a tired argument that he is a practicing Muslim, was sworn in on a Koran, will not deal forcefully with our enemies. We have no problem with you using his middle name. It would be nice if when you did it, you were not trying to say that he socializes with %u201Cterrorists%u201D or that he is the anti-Christ or that he is black. Your use of his middle name is always used towards that end. Many of us have a problem with you being racist and with your discrimination towards an Islamic surname. Shame on you for trying to put lip stick on your racism by simply saying, %u201Cit is his name%u201D. Yes, it is his name. And you know *** good and well what you are attempting to accomplish when you vocally inflect it as Cunningham and Scott did.
Barack is a Semitic word meaning "to bless" as a verb or "blessing" as a noun. In its Hebrew form, barak, it is found all through the Bible. It first occurs in Genesis 1:22 -- "And God blessed (%u1E07%u0101re%u1E35%u0259) them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth."%u2026
Now let us take the name "Hussein." It is from the Semitic word hasan, meaning "good" or "handsome." Husayn is the diminutive, affectionate form. Barack Obama''s middle name is in honor of his grandfather, Hussein, a secular resident of Nairobi, Kenya. Americans may think of Saddam Hussein when they hear the name, but that is like thinking of Stalin when you hear the name Joseph. There have been lots of Husseins in history, from the grandson of the prophet Mohammed, a hero who touched the historian Gibbon, to King Hussein of Jordan, one of America''s most steadfast allies in the 20th century. The author of the beloved American novel "The Kite Runner" is Khaled Hosseini.
But in Obama''s case, it is just a reference to his grandfather%u2026.So, anyway, Obama''s first two names mean "blessing, the good." If we are lucky enough to get him for president, we can only hope that his names are prophetic for us.

Around twenty years ago we had a Republican administration giving arms and aid to a guy named Hussein, and about twenty years ago, we had McCain preaching deregulation in the financial sector.
