On "The View", McCain Weighs in On Lipstick, Roe v. Wade

(CBS)
From CBS News' John Bentley:

(NEW YORK) – Responding for the first time to the ads his campaign has put out about Barack Obama, John McCain told the ladies of “The View” today Obama should not have used the phrase “lipstick on a pig” in talking about McCain and Sarah Palin’s policies being no different than President Bush’s.

“Sen. Obama chooses his words very carefully,” McCain said. “He shouldn’t have said it.”

McCain said that the fault lay with Obama for the negative turn both campaigns have taken because they haven’t had more appearances together.

“If we had done what I asked Sen. Obama to do,” McCain said, referring to his proposal to hold joint town hall meetings, “I don’t think you’d see the tenor of this campaign.”

He was also asked if he would work to overturn Roe v. Wade. Perhaps because of the heavily female audience of "The View", McCain did not answer directly, but instead laid out his views on appointing judges.

“What we’d be doing is nominating justices to the Supreme Court and other courts who strictly interpret Constitution,” McCain said. “We would not impose a litmus test on any issue.”

But on his website, McCain is much more direct.

“John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench,” it reads. “Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states…however, the reversal of Roe v. Wade represents only one step in the long path toward ending abortion.”

I saw a little blue bird sitting in a great oak tree singing a song of freedom. Then came a hunter with his sling shot loaded and ready to fire.

Will he choose to take the life of this sweet bird. Or let the bird live to continue singing the song of freedom.

FREEDOM.. UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL.. NATIONS ARE WATCHING!!!

CHOOSE WISELY..

WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATOR WITH CERTAIN UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE, LIBERY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS...

Sarah are you & Senator McCain really going to shake up Washington??

Will you do something about the due nothing Washington crowd??

Will you clean up the messes and stand for what is right??

If you really can... WE THE PEOPLE of this Great Country will STAND with you.

We''''''''re ready for a real CHANGE.

Are you & Senator McCain ready to make the changes???

SARAH.. be our voice.. be strong & courageous.

I hate the word PIG and COP and have no respect for anyone that would call anyone those names.

A policeman or policewoman should be called such and not Pig or COP.
Also Governor Palin has big shoulders and I am sure she is used to all the slanderous words
people say about her.

God bless the USA and all our wonderful troops and families every where.

That was pathetic. Usually when you interview someone you let them finish their answer before you interrupt them for the next ATTACK. Kudo''s to Mcain for keeping his cool. The women of the view were positively VOLATILE. I have never in my 32 years seen a more biased interview. Shameful. They missed all the important questions. Umm.... HELLO ..... Health Care? Economy? Education? Soaring gas prices? Where were these questions? I wish I could take that hour of my life back. I was hopng to learn a bit more to help me make up my mind about my decision. Instead I learned that Abortion is apparently the most important issue?????????? Don''t worry with this economy no one could AFFORD an abortion. But hey why would we want to talk about the economy?!!?

Way to go girls - u asked the tough questions and demanded answers! So, no we have some of the answers. Mccain supports the overturn of Roe v'' wade, Cindy disagrees with palin on whether or not abortions should be illegal if raped, McCain picked Palin to reform GOP and even himself (which i seriously doubt they would let her do even if she really wanted to), McCain also admitted that he was a hypocrite by answering that he is for the separation of church and state but thinks that extremists should govern over all and again evades the question of how many houses he does and finally, Cindy says that we should go to war with Russia! Grreat!!! Thank you girls for bringing the truth into light. For all of you that can''t handle objective questions are only afraid of the answers and the exposure of their candidate. Listen, you can''t keep McCain and Palin locked up forever- eventually they need to be exposed. And, if they had america''s true interests at heart - this wouldn''t even be an issue. Oh and btw - cindy nice stumble by saying that mccain puts his career bfore the country. So tellilng! Way to go girls, you are truly my hereos today! I hope that you inspire other media outlets to be more objective. And ABC, have a backbone - don''t go firing these women because they had enough courage and guts to talk about issues that are pertinent to the american people.

McCain refused a direct answer to overturning Roe vs Wade, but said it was a bad law and he and Sarah Palin would choose new Supreme Court justices who would overturn it.
What no one talks about is what happens when these two occupy the White House with no constituency. How are they going to reform everything?
They have both destroyed any chance they have of bipartianship.
Their serial lying has destroyed most people''s respect for them.
A President without integrity cannot govern.
Their party will be in minority.
We will have four years of no leadership, no problems solved, fights with Congress over all the wars these two want to start, further Constitutional breakdown leading to utter chaos.
I predict severe buyer''s remorse within a month with three horrible years and 11 months to go until Jeb Bush takes over.

you have to remember, with democrats and liberals, it''s not what you did or what you plan to do, it''s what you say. so them, they feel very very tough. They get this from thinking that popular actors are the greatest thing in the world and have all the power.

no doubt the obama kool-aid drinkers will think this was a stupendous victory. they don''t understand everytime they ambush someone, they push middle america further and further into Palin''s lovin'' arms

poor dems, hoodwinked by Moveon.org and DNC power elite. Had their real candidate stolen and now hollywood and the liberal media will cost them this election......again

lol... seriously, Roe Vs Wade is NOT going to be overturned... regardless of who''s in the white house. It''s too big of a political issue to deal with... and there are more pressing issues out there that''s important.

And lets say it does get overturned, then the authority goes back to the state, gives the people in that particular region to vote on the issue that affects there lives.

why do people get bent out of shape for it is beyond me.

On another note... funny watching an interview where the interviewer doesn''t want to hear the answers. Even more hillarious is to see little girls in adult bodies.

People are saying Palin didn''t interview b/c she wasn''t ready, while Obama (the top ticket) didn''t want to debate w/McCain back then b/c he wasn''t ready. I used to really respect Sen. McCain because he seemed to stand for something. But now, seeing how he is running a very dirty and divisive campaign, I no longer feel the way I once did. In my opinion, his campaign is doing everything to keep the American people off the real issues this race should be about. I want to hear about the economy, the national debt, the housing crisis etc. not a bunch of lies and distortions about Obama or about who said what about Palin. I%u2019m sick and tired of hearing all this stuff that doesn%u2019t really matter. If this election is decided on anything besides the issues and which candidate has the best vision for our country, then we will have failed our children who will inherit our mess. In 20 years, will the people in this country look back and wonder why we didn%u2019t address the issues in this campaign and why we were distracted by all the whining over who said what about whoever. Hurray for McCain! Abortion HURTS women. It exploits them and their children.

Traditionally, culturally men have been protectors of society, women and children. They have sought to keep them from harm and cherished them. In the last 50 years, sadly, chivalry seems to be dying a slow death. Roe v. Wade was a poor judicial decision in that it legislated from the bench, the OPINION of individuals who were supposed to INTERPRET not create law. I''m happy Sen. McCain sees that.

I saw Joy Behar the other night on Larry King. Her ranting was hysterical. (and I don''t mean funny) Authentic feminism is embracing what true womanhood is all about--It is truly a privilege to give life. Thanks, Senator, for recognizing that!!

Ah, but the neo-Republicans have a solution to the "states rights" issue: They WILL deny federal funds to any state that allows abortions.

How childish of McCain to say
that Obama is to blame for the
negativity in the campaigns
because he wouldn''t appear with
him in town hall meetings!

Does this mean this angered
McCain so much he approved all
the negative ads to get back at
Obama?

As for over-turning Roe V. Wade,
we''ve had the great conservative
anti-abortion President Bush in
office for 8 years. Why hasn''t
it been overturned? Didn''t he
run on this same anti-abortion
platform? How many times do we
have to get hit over the head
before we realize who''s hitting us?

The religious right seems so caught up in hot-button issues they cannot see straight. Look---I do not believe in abortion---but I know that you cannot legislate against it. It would just create a black market. Do you really believe that criminalizing desperate women is the way to solve this problem----do you really believe that? Can''t you see that we have to work on solving the problems---together---that create the perceived need for abortion.

Look--- all the religions are worshiping the same God. There is only one God and each religion is trying to define, understand, and experience him. Our God is not better than their God. We are all one and no one is ever better or worse than anyone else. We have got to stop talking as if being a Muslim is wrong. I am a Christian but I believe that Muslims are just as good as I am. Obama understands that we all have to come together and cooperate. Christian churches need to invide Muslims to come and speak and vice versa. We are all trying to reach God and God does not change no matter what earthly names we give it--or what earthly structures we build to worship.

There is still a thinly veiled bias about a black man in office which is couched in many worthless excuses.
So I tell people if you believe legislators, usually men, sitting up in DC have more right to make a determination for you about your own body; if you don''t believe the recent study which states that in the past 30 years the stock market had yielded 11 to 15 percent in the market under Dem presidents and 4 to 5 percent under Republican Presidents; if you refused to believe the facts that if you make less than 150,000 a year and don''t get it that you would have a tax cut under Obama, if you don''t understand that the economy is circling the drain, if you think that the universe is only
5,000 years old and creationism should be taught in schools, if you haven''t read the paper and are aware of the biggest corruption and failure of the mortgage loan in this country, if you are not tired of spending/flushing 40 billion a year down the rat hole in Iraq, if you are not tired of 90% of the population having thousands less spending power each year then hey be my guest and vote for McCain.

I think that Sara Palin did a rash act when she traveled long distance by air ---close to her due date. All GYN MD''s I have ever spoken with (and that is many) have always given instructions not to travel in the last trimester---especially close to your due date and especially by air and especially long distance. Indeed she boarded a flight home from Texas with leaking amniotic fluid. She was gambling with the life of her baby because what if she went into labor and had the baby on the flight and the baby needed any type of suctioning or oxygen or more? Very poor judgment and obviously not really caring about her baby.

Twice during The View interview, McCain mentioned that this country was established on Judo-Christian values and went on to say he wanted judges that interpret the law the way the founding fathers meant it to be. Who knows what they meant it to be? It''s subjective. MCCain backed up his statement by repeating the phrase, In God we Trust and all." Well, McCain, In God we Trust is not in the Constitution nor is there any mention of God in the Constitution. Jefferson was a diests - not a Christian. IN God we Trust was placed on our bills in 1955 as a slap in the face to the communists. It was not on our original legal tender.

Excuse me. Did anyone notice that John Bentley, the author of the above article, got it wrong? He acts like McCain didn''t answer the Roe v. Wade question directly and feels the need to quote McCain''s website in order to show what he "really" believes, but if you saw The View you would know he said exactly what he said on his website. No deceit or double talk going on there, although that is what Bentley would have us believe. It''s ridiculous that now we as citizens'' can''t rely on the media for objective information and need to start fact checking everything they report as well! The biased is just disgusting and incredibly unprofessional. We need reform in the media world.

I am an undecided voter at this point, but the media bias is sickening. As for the lipstick comment Sen. Obama knew excactly what he was saying. Listen to the audience''s reaction before he finished the statement. Also Joe Biden said the exact same thing at a rally the same day. The dems should man up and admit they took a shot at Palin. Who could blame them for the way they got hammered at the RNC. The debates should be very telling as to where the candidates truly stand on issues and their specific plans for leading the country. Hopefully this will be done without being shouted down by a bunch of old trots.
