Palin Speech Scores Big Ratings
(ST. PAUL) Sarah Palin was unknown to the public just a week ago, but it's going to be hard to say that about her anymore. The ratings from her speech at the Republican National Convention are in, and it's now clear just how all the buzz about her translated big time into viewership for the Republican convention.
According to Nielsen, 37.2 million people watched the speech on six networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX News Channel, and MSNBC). That is just 1.1 million less than watched Obama's speech last Thursday night. Compare that to the estimated 24 million who watched Democratic VP nominee Joe Biden's speech last Wednesday night. You can also compare that to the about 34 million who watched the opening of the Beijing Olympics last month, 32 million who watched this year's Oscars and 31.7 million who watched last spring's American Idol finale.
According to Nielsen, Palin also attracted 19.5 million women, which is 4.9 million more than watched Biden. And 1.4 million Hispanic viewers watched, which is more than the 1.2 million who watched day 3 of the Democratic convention, even though Univision and Telemundo did not carry Palin's speech last night. In fact, it's also of note that Palin's speech was carried by four less networks than Obama's speech (BET and TV One also showed Obama).
Palin has certainly gotten people's attention now. Now the question is whether that will translate into votes for the Republican ticket.

See all 63 CommentsHe''s definitely playing second-fiddle to Palin right now.
As a guy, I was really impressed by her, as she seemed to me, to really resonate & represent ALOT of "middle class" American women, who could relate to her.
All I can say about her speech last night, was Wow!!! McCain hit a home run on his pick!
Believe it, he did threaten his father-in-law, and tazered his stepson, plus they step outside of the law all of the time.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced to four years in federal prison Thursday for his corrupt lobbying activities, which led to the downfalls of a congressman and several other Washington officials.
How on earth did John McCain dodge THIS bullet?
Maybe Jack will write John a note..."Drill here. Drill now!"
Palin bounce?
Not so fast.

Naw, it''s already bad enough when there''s one wholly inexperienced person running for President. Veep''s a good job for her first.
- she was for the "bridge to nowhere" before it became politically unpopular then stated she was against it, but took the federal money anyway.
- she loved earmarks, some she asked for are even on John McCain''s objectionable earmarks list.
-she loved lobbyists and hired one to get the earmarks she wanted.
-she attended the conventions of a secessionist party of which her husband was a registered member of for nearly 10 years even though its leader expressed hatred for the United States government.
- According to the WSJ, she mismanaged the purchase of land for a hockey rink/sportscenter she advocated for as mayor, resulting in a large cost overrun.
- As mayor of Wasilla, she tried to fire the respected town librarian who didn''t go along with her plan to ban books (reported in the New York Times and Time magazine and the Anchorage Daily News).
Wait three more days and then open your mouth.
I find it both comical and frustrating that the same people who point out Bush''s dismal approval ratings, McCain''s support of his policies, and not wanting 4 more years of "the same", have blinders on when it comes to the only approval ratings lower than the Presidents....
The Democratic controlled Congress and Senate (which Obama is a part of).
They also state that even if we opened ANWR for drilling, it would take 10 years for the oil to start flowing.
How conveniently they forget to mention that if it weren''t for those same Democrats, we would have permitted offshore drilling over ten years ago, the price of oil would not be soaring due to "speculation" on oil futures, the economy would be strong, and we could have been at least "on the road" to energy independence today.
Its a good thing Obama is running on change.
He keeps switching from one face to another.
Obama should listen to the words of Michael Jackson:
"If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, and make a CHANGE".
Palin does not respect women, only a certain kind of Christian woman who chooses to be a homemaker and mother. Environment, conservation, energy independence -- she hasn''t given them a second thought. What kind of person tries to ban books from libraries? So much for freedom of speech. As a "Right to Life" advocate, she grants full human rights to a fertilized egg, but to the already living who struggle, not so much. And it''s shameful to trash Obama''s organizing. He registered hundreds of thousands of Chicago voters for the first time while she was running in beauty contests and trying to get on ESPN.
Obama raised $8 million in the last 24 hours.
My wife was blown away by the speech. She is one of those people who usually influences the votes of 20 other people. This hear, she plans to get 20 other people to actively campaign for Palin and for each of them to find 20 people to vote for McCain / Palin.
Johnny, I didn''t know you had it in you. No wonder two of your ancestors were Admirals.
Well done!
She was awesome.
She is one of the us.
To hear these (mostly female!) pundits, I guess American women have been put back about 40 years. So we can no longer work & raise babies? You''re joking right? I am typing this in a hurry as I start the night shift of my second job. So you mean I can go back home? I guess this means the government is going to quite taking the over 40 percent in taxes from my husband''s paycheck each year that I have to work to make up for?
Give me a break!
I can''t relate to Hilary Clinton, but Sarah Palin is all of us! She is a small business woman--not just a hockey/PTA mom, a GOVERNOR--not just a small town mayor. She''s a star athlete &outdoorswoman, who can not only fry up the bacon, but skin it before she brings it home.
Compare her to Joe Biden--whose only claim to "everyman" is that he rides an amtrak to & from Washington every day--at a cost of $99 each way.... hmmm...
When his fellow POW stood up with his introduction, he had tears in his eyes.
Obama--the communist community activist (who did not leave south side Chicago a better place) is not worthy to tie McCain''s shoes.
Wonder why no one asks about Obama''s speech writer...
I guess they think he writes his own, like Michelle, or that he runs a multi-million dollar campaign--not his campaign manager.
So much for his executive experience--unless you count deciding when and where to take his smoke break....
Palin doesn''t believe that humans contribute to global warming. Speaking about climate change, she said, "I''m not one though who would attribute it to being manmade." Palin has close ties to Big Oil. Her inauguration was even sponsored by BP.Palin is extremely anti-choice. She doesn''t even support abortion in the case of rape or incest.

Obama needs to start buying more votes with some of that money. He''s tanking.
Oh, wait...if he spends it he can''t keep it. Silly me.
Obama is great at giving speeches, has legal experience but we have had enough lawyers ruining our country, we need the real heros and people we really can relate to like Sarah to get us a new start, Biden is still too entrenched just along for the ride.
Make America strong, respected and prosperous is what I get from John McCain, he will work bipartisanly to get things through Congress, he will use ask for both sides to work in a comprimise environment and laws for all Americans will be passed.
Obama is all about Obama and not about us, his career IS his first concern and always has been.

And if that is all it takes to win over some people, then it truly demonstrates the "lack of intelligence", of many Americans.

On top of the fact she brought in almost 5 million more women viewers than Hillary Clinton''s DNC convention speech? Not good.
