First Things First With John McCain

(CBS)
From CBS News' Ryan Corsaro:

(ERIE, PA.) - Asked what he would do in his first 90 days in office, John McCain told employees of a locomotive manufacturing plant that he would explain his first priority as president. And he did. Four different ways.

1.) Humorously: “Call (former Pennsylvania governor) Tom Ridge to Washington from whatever vacation he’s taking... and get him to work.” Ridge appeared with McCain today and is rumored to be on McCain's list of possible running mates;

2.) Obligatory: “The president’s first obligation is to ensure the nation is safe and that means getting a national security team together, look at the challenges we are facing, if and you need any more affirmation that we live in a dangerous world my friends, look at the events that are transpiring in Georgia. To make sure this nation is safe, that’s the first priority of any president”;

3.) Fundamentally: “One fundamental mission: restore trust and confidence in government. Therefore, inspire confidence in America again”;

4.) Obviously: “Obviously, our first priority has got to be to restore our economy. As I said before, jobs and jobs and jobs and jobs, That to me is our greatest priority.”

As for the rest of his speech, it focused on new technology and its role in developing new and less expensive forms of energy. In regards to energy independence, he said that his choice of whether to pursue wind, solar, nuclear, coal, or natural gas would be “all of the above”.

McCain made a push for the development of the expensive process of clean coal technology, saying the cost would come down with the growth of its use, and compared it to the drop in price of a cell phone cost over the past two decades.

He called for offshore drilling as a means to help America with rising gas costs as it makes its transition to alternative energy sources.

“By golly, we ought to start going out and getting it as soon as possible,” said McCain at the General Electric Transportation plant here.

Unlike his last few days on the trail, McCain made no mention of Barack Obama, who is on vacation in Hawaii this week.

I think the only Americans who hate are those who support a man who hated Americans his whole life and can relate to it. Are you American or not? Do you want to believe in "hate" or not? Do you think America needs to change and change into what?? How did Obama change? Can he tell you? And, how long ago did HE change? Leaving Rev Wright recently is not
"change" that is "politics" That is the million dollar thought.

MCCAIN IS OUR BEST BET.

McCain, who has jumped into the pockets of the Bushite neocons, is far too dangerous to be trusted as president.

The man showed his loyalty when he dumped the wife who waited for years while in prison camp, just to marry the blonde moneybags who bought him his political office.

His increasing senility, ignorance, and hair-trigger temper make electing McCain far to great a risk for America.

McCain needs to pick somebody younger and sexier for his VP candidate- and it wouldn;t hurt if they could stay on track- I would suggest Bob Dole or Ross Perot.

My critical analysis of McCains proposed energy policy, made possible with common sense, shows it to be far more practical than Dem proposals. If anybody can show me, mathmatically, how Obama intends to power this country with solar and wind power, I''ll eat my hat.

I believe you will find that the correct spelling is "mathematically."

Of course you know that Obama did not propose that.

But what the heck- smear smear smear-

jsilver2th,

Obama has never said that we can power the entire country with wind and solar but several studies have shown that there''s enough wind power potential in the plains states alone to meet 60% of our nrrfd. That equates to an awful lot of oil off the market and a lot less nuclear waste, greenhouse gas, and lower prices for everything since the wind is free.

The price of solar is just now becoming cost competitive and foreign companies are poised to cash in. We need a Manhattan-style effort to get back into the game.

Oil is a limited resource. As we drill more and deplete our reserves at an accelerated rte to deal with the short-term crisis(but not really succeed in doing so) we reduce the long term supply and hasten the day that reserves are depleted and costs skyrocket well beyond where they are today.

The wind and the sun will never go away and will always be free.

A couple additional points...the technology for solar and wind already exists and is being employed in a significant way by our competitors.

It has no environmental drawbacks like oil, nuclear, and coal and is cheaper to generate.

Don''t count on the American Petroleum Council or their subsidiary the Republican Party to tell you that.

+ report abuse

I thought we were trying to get off our dependence of foreign oil , so why a;; this hoopla over off shore drilling isn''t that in fact more oil usage.I think the American people know what to do to fix the Middle East and the big oil cartels as well with our own ways of reducing gas we brought the price down, they can claim what they want , but it scared them we could drop the usage so fast, so we can do even more and then they have to do what is right.

I''ve contributed money to McCain''s campaign in the past and have admired him for years, but finding out recently that he called his wife a "trollop" and a "c-nt" in front of reporters deeply disturbs me. I''m not sure I want someone as President who treats his wife that way, especially when he does it in public. It doesn''t speak well for his attitude towards women and his temperament, to say the least. What a choice this year - will there ever be one where I can vote for someone, instead of against?

First Things First With John McCain... yeah, within is first 90 days he wants to give total amnesty to over 20 million illegal aliens. I wonder why he didn''t tell all the white people in pennsylvania that is what he really intends to do. How letting over 20 million more low skilled workers on our already horrible economy is beyond me and proves that Amnesty Mccain knows NOTHING about economics. He just cares about getting his money, and making sure his rich buddies get their tax breaks!

I''d still rather Edwards become president over Amnesty Mccain. Atleast Edwards is a product of the labor unions and wouldn''t want over 20 million illegals to get amnesty. Atleast Edwards admitted to his affair. Amnesty Mccain cheated on his first wife for years with his current beer wife! No more government for the rich people and illegal immigrants! Vote Democrat!

Amnesty Mccain stated that "I do care more about illegal mexicans, than about the regular americans and service memebers of the military fighting overease. It will be standard that every American will be forced to speak spanish within 90 days of me being sworn in as president. That would have been the truth, but we know like other republican creed,...lie, lie, lie! -------------------------

Recent reports state that the Alaska Pipeline crude is going mostly to Asian markets. What guarantee do we have that new offshore drilling crude will go to the USA? Also, our refineries are at capacity. Unless we build more, they cannot use the new offshore oil. What happens then?

I"m not looking for an Outsourcer-in-Chief or an Importer-in-Chief. I''m looking for a Economic-Reality-Within-Our-Borders-in-Chief.

People this very old and mentally unstable man can''t wait to get his hands on the Military. He can''t wait to be "Commander" in Chief and fight some wars... He absolutely LOVE''s the idea of "Winning" a War. As someone who''s actually BEEN there, there is NO such thing as Winning a War. I want a leader who will use our Military ONLY when it''s absolutely NECESSARY and ONLY when it''s the LAST resort. McSame IS NOT that man!! Sieg Heil McSame

Didn''t McCain learn anything from 8 years of Bush and Cheney telling us to do as they say and not as they do?

It is saddening to read how dumb my fellow Americans are and out of touch with reality. You criticize McCain on issues that Oboma has done the exact same thing! such as: (except donations from oil companies) (don%u2019t get me started on switching positions because Oboma has changed his stance on more critical issues than any candidate I have ever seen!!!! ) (TO they person who mentioned Illegal Immigrants have you listened to OBOMAS SPEECH at a campaigning rally in I believe Texas where most of his audience was Hispanic??? He told them that Americans should learn how to speak Spanish and that wouldn%u2019t we all what our children to be Bilingual? ) Im sorry but my father is from Cuba and immigrated to this country Legally before Castro took office and when he stepped on to America from the airplane there was no SPANISH BUTTON for getting through everyday life. And I will end by saying this on the Oil Situation that our country faces. Oboma%u2019s plan to tax the revenue on oil companies has no way but to negatively affect the price at the pump DUH!! Where do you think the oil companies are going to make up that loss. It is not the oil companies in America that control Oil prices it%u2019s OPEC and the oil speculators that control prices.

ECONOMY CLASS 101 %u2013 Prices of any industry are solely controlled by the laws of supply and demand. Demand in America will not change that much because my truck does not run on WIND POWER or the AIR PRESSURE from MY TIRES, so then if we want prices to drop then we need to have an affect on SUPPLY!!! I will break it down for the less intelligent%u2026..WE Need to get oil from elsewhere like OUR COUNTRY which will increase the SUPPLY of the oil markets which will then DECREASE OUR DEMAND FOR OVERSEAS OIL. THIS MEANS THE PRICE WILL DROP !!!!!! that was fun wasn%u2019t it, learning should be fun
