State Fair Visit Is Not Just Another Day On the Campaign Trail

(CBS)
From CBS News' John Bentley

(DES MOINES, IOWA) – John McCain stopped by the Iowa State Fair today to stump for votes in this swing state extol the virtues of the “heartland of America.” Frankly, most of the reporters in the traveling press corps were more excited about the wonders of the state fair – deep fried candy bars! Half ton pigs! – than the senator today, so most of us wandered the fairgrounds in search of food that is really, really bad for you.

McCain’s first stop was the swine barn, where he stopped to chat with the owner of Freight Train, the biggest pig in the 154-year history of the fair. Tipping the scales at 1,259 pounds, ‘Train bested last year’s winner by 13 pounds. He could not be bothered to wake up, however, during the senator’s visit, perhaps because of McCain’s denunciation of pork-barrel politics (that’s the last of the pig jokes).

McCain then went to speak at the soapbox area of the fair. The press went to go find deep fried food. We succeeded when we came across a stand selling deep-fried Snickers bars, which are both tastier and more disgusting than you might imagine.

No one could choke down more than a bite or two because of the richness, but everyone agreed it was delicious. McCain also said he was going to find some fair food.

“As soon as I finish here. we are going to try and have a pork chop on a stick and deep fried Twinkie,” he said, but since there are no pictures of this happening, the claims are dubious.

After taking in the butter sculptures, cheese curds, and every conceivable meat product that could possibly be put on a stick, it was back to the campaign plane to fly to Arkansas. Sadly, there is no mention of a state fair visit.

People have been naturally attracted and intrigued by Barack Obama where ever he goes (media included). John McCain creates attention by having his (current) wife Cindy competes in topless optional beauty contests.

I guess what ever gets the job done.

I just discovered the secret to John McCain''s success. Bob Boze Bell, on the western channel, just said that westerners have always appreciated a good liar, honoring several with elected office.

You know bswalker12, I''ve been wondering why the media didn''t go nuts over McCain''s gaff in Sturgis, offering his wife for a "topless" contest, that they didn''t shows the media is watching out for Old John. They would have smeared Obama if he made such a insane, stupid, asinine statement.

Hello my friend. I''m John McRove:

I''m speaking to you to let you know that I can only try to smear Obama and scare you into voting for me. You see. KKKarl has told me to leave it all up to him. All I have to do is kiss babies and talk in vague generalities unless it''s something negative about Obama. You see, I''m saddled with 8 years of Republican failure and malfeasance. We gutted the treasury, allowed a false war to be prosecuted, spied on loyal Americans, spent all the surplus and let the wealthy get a free ride on the middle class.

So what''s the problem here? I mean, really, all we need to do is wave the flag and mouth empty platitudes. Say, did you see the Paris Hilton ad? Talk about hard hitting and decisive. It doesn''t get any better than that.

Wait until next week. We have a whole campaign about Obama and arrugula. Real hard hitting stuff. Should be a killer.

Posted by bswalker12: John McCain brings experience and vision to America when we need it most against our enemies all over the world.
Barack Obama wishes to open our borders to the world and let the terrorists sprawl on the White House lawn like picnickers lunching in Central Park.

I hope you aren''t offended by my cleaning up that portion of your post in which you referenced the Senator from Illnois. I could not even begin to respond to that non sequitor. However, I hope you realize that your man of experience and vision for the 21st century leadership of the most technologically advanced nation in the world can''t IM, Text, Email or Compute. Good luck with that.

in response to bswalker12:

McCain''s vision for America is dark and fearful. There is nothing more positive that McCain can offer the American people...at least McCain hasn''t spoken of any positive vision for America. Like Bush, McCain wants to criticize the other guy and offer fake-solutions that have no substance. If McCain is so great, why are there so many ex-republicans (like myself) who won''t even register as republican let alone contribute to McCain''s campaign? McCain''s vision for America is full of empty promises of change that McCain never spoke of as a senator. And McCain has done more to promote the status quo politics that GW Bush perfected. McCain is MORE OF THE SAME

H. Res. 6578, the Consumer Energy Supply Act of 2008. The measure received strong majority support in a House vote today of 268 to 157, but failed to receive the two-thirds necessary to pass under suspension of the rules. All Democrats present voted for the measure, while 157 Republicans voted against it. The measure would direct the release of a small amount of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, bringing down gas prices and sending a strong message to energy speculators.

"The American people have paid for more than 700 million barrels of oil to be held in this government stockpile. At significant taxpayer expense, the SPR is currently 97 percent full - its highest level ever.

You can see the names of the 157 Republicans who voted to keep the price of gas high at this link:

Send your contributions to their opponents as soon as possible!

John McCain is a humble and down to earth person. He will make a great President.

John McCain is nothing like the arrogant and egotistical Hussein Obama.

Humble? Down to earth? We are not talking about the same John McCian. Just because Barack Obama is smart, you shouldn''''t confuse that with arrogance.

I just love the "right''s" view of Obama:

"Oooh look at him using his fancy, articulate speaking skills, and he''s such a show off drawing such HUGE supportive crowds."

Like being a smart person, with good ideas, able to communicate them easily, and being popular is "bad".

Such gullible morons.

JukeBox John pissed them off in the pivotal state of Iowa. Guess the Elitist McCain, with his $520 Ferragamo loafers, did no resonate with folks in Fly-Over Country. McSame is toast in November.

John McCain is dangerous for women....a fellow adulterer

What does John McCain and Edwards have in common? John McCain lied and cheated on this first wife (committed adultery) to mary Cindy McCain a very rich pretty second wife. Since his second marriage there have been more reports of affairs-more adultery. John McCain offered up his wife during a biking campagin event to participate in a wet tee contest. No respect for his wife and women. John McCain voted against equal pay for women. He voted against suporting birth control measures for women . He will overturn Roe vs Wade which he said he will do. He is dangerous for women. In Gods eyes John McCain committed a sin and continues to do so ! Oh maybe he has stoped until maybe he wins the election then back to his old tricks again. America wake up! I forgot about the $520 dollar shoes and his wife spending $75,000 in one month on clothes......He is not one of us!!!
