Morning Road Map

by Michelle Levi and Steve Chaggaris

OBAMA is in Amman, Jordan today where he will meet with King Abdullah this evening. Prior to his meeting, he will hold a press conference with Sens. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., with whom he toured Iraq and Afghanistan the past few days.

McCAIN is in Rochester, N.H. today where he’ll meet with the publisher of the Manchester Union Leader in Rochester, N.H. before holding a town hall meeting at noon. Later this evening McCain heads to Baltimore for a fund-raiser.

Obama said he would not support the surge if he had to do it over again, in an interview with ABC News’ Terry Moran. “These kinds of hypotheticals are very difficult. Hindsight is 20/20. But I think what I am absolutely convinced of is that at that time, we had to change the political debate, because the view of the Bush Administration at that time was one that I just disagreed with." The McCain campaign responded with an e-mail saying “Obama admitted tonight that he would rather see failure in Iraq than concede that he was wrong about the surge. A candidate who places his political ambition ahead of our national interest does not pass the threshold to be commander in chief.”

CAMPAIGN FUNDRAISING
LA Times, “Clinton supporters lend Obama a big fundraising hand” : “Her former donors step up in June to chip in over a million dollars to his campaign. His backers have barely made a dent in her $25-million debt.”

However, Wall Street Journal reports, “Few Democratic Donors Help Opposing Candidate” : “After a hard-fought contest for the Democratic presidential nomination, donors to Sen. Barack Obama and defeated rival Sen. Hillary Clinton didn't rush to help each other's candidates in June, new campaign-finance data show.”

USA Today, “Wealthy few provide cash for independent political groups”

U.S. News and World Report’s Erbe, “Barack Obama’s Fundraising Hypocrisy -- a Lobbyist by Any Other Name...”

ALSO:
Time Magazine, “Never Underestimate McCain, But...” : “Oh, let's just admit it: John McCain is a long shot. He's got a heroic personal story, and being white has never hurt a presidential candidate, but on paper 2008 just doesn't look like his year. And considering what's happening off paper, it might be time to ask the question the horse-race-loving media are never supposed to ask: Is McCain a no-shot?”

Washington Post profiles Cindy McCain, “The Perfect Part”

Wall Street Journal’s Steele, “Why Jesse Jackson Hates Obama” : “Mr. Obama is so successful at winning gratitude from whites precisely because Mr. Jackson was so successful at inflaming and exploiting white guilt. Mr. Jackson must now see his own oblivion in the very features of Mr. Obama's face. Thus the on-camera threat of castration, followed by the little jab of his fist as if to deliver a stiletto of his own.”

Washington Post, “McCain’s Maverick Side: Grandpa Would Be Proud”

Chicago Sun-Times, “McCain’s own Tony Rezko”

Chicago Tribune, “Making fun of Barack Obama: Here goes” : “I called some comedian friends to compile a guide to making fun of Obama. The consensus is there's not yet one standout attribute to pound away on (John McCain is old! Bill Clinton cheats on his wife! President Bush is stupid! Al Gore is a robot! John Kerry makes me feel inexplicably sad inside!), but there are areas to explore. If we just work a little harder, and sacrifice a little bit, we can achieve greatness. We are the immature jerks we have been waiting for.”

It is becoming very apparent that the international community is yearning for a new United States President, and not more of George Bush, Richard Cheney, Condoleeza Rice and of course John McCain same policies and arrogance without any regard to effect on each individual country.
