CBS News Poll: Americans More Upbeat On Iraq But Most Still Say U.S. Should Have Stayed Out

A new CBS News/New York Times will be out at 6:30 this evening but we have an early look at some of the numbers.

The poll shows that while Americans have been pessimistic about the direction of the country in general and the state of the economy in particular, they are increasingly positive about the way things are going in Iraq.

Just seven percent say the war in Iraq is going very well but 45 percent now say it is going at least somewhat well. This marks the most positive assessment of the war since January, 2006, and a 10 point upswing since just last month. But 51 percent say the war is going at least somewhat badly. In June, just 35 percent said the war was going somewhat well while 62 percent said it was going badly.

Still, 59 percent of Americans say that the U.S. should have stayed out of Iraq altogether, a number slightly up from April when 57 percent said so. Thirty six percent say that the U.S. did the right thing by going to war with Iraq.

Barack Obama’s campaign has been trying to paint a possible John McCain presidency as a third Bush term and that message may be resonating with some voters, particularly on Iraq. Most (78 percent) think McCain will continue President Bush’s policies in Iraq. Just 17 percent say McCain will not continue those policies.

For more on the CBS News/New York Times poll, tune in to the CBS Evening News tonight and see the full results at CBSNews.com at 6:30.

Iraq is%u2026.OVER!

There were no weapons of mass destruction, or delivery systems.
Iraq had absolutely no air force and a depleted army.
Saddam Hussein was under UN sanctions.

George Bush and Richard Cheney had the aspiration to invade Saddam%u2019s Oil Fields at their inauguration in January 2001. $Billions and $Billions of US Federal Treasury Funds have been wasted away on this immoral and insidious crusade for control and profits.

Meanwhile, Osama Bin Laden has been allowed to continue his operations and fragmenting of the US economy. Islamic Terrorism is and always has been centered in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Bush Administration has not alleviated the security threat, but has permitted its flourish.

The Nouri Al-Maliki Government has called for the scheduled withdrawal of US Military Troops from Iraq, Oil contracts have been executed between the New Iraqi Government and 5 Multinational Oil Corporations.

It%u2019s done, and time to leave.

Ariel133:

So when did you do your stint in Iraq? If Obama is unqualified because he hasn''t been to Iraq, I assume you measure yourself by the same standard. I''m supposed to accept your assessment without any mention of your bona fides?

Just in case you haven''t read any of the recent information that might conflict with your world-view, former Federal Reserve Chairman Greenspan, hardly an Obama apologist, stated that the reason for the Iraq war was not about Saddam Hussein or terror, it was about oil. Greenspan was the ultimate Washington insider and part of the Bush Administration inner cicle. You need to stop channeling right-wing talk radio and look objectively at the facts. The Iraq war has NOT, by even the Bush Administration''s intelligence assessments, reduced the threat of terrorism for Americans...it has increased it. An administration that wages an assault on our Constitutional freedoms is a lot more of a threat to us than Iraq ever was.

THERE IS NOTHING IN THE MIDDLE EAST AMERICA NEEDS OR IS THERE ANY THREAT TO AMERICA THERE!

THE ONLY REASON IT STAYS IN THE NEWS IS BECAUSE THE AMERICAN MEDIA IS RUN BY AIPAC MEMBERS!

I happen to know a lot of supposedly smart Americans who are still invested in war profiteers. Who still believe the military is somehow protecting our freedom. Who still get their news from TV and newspapers and then believe propaganda like the surge is working. I am just reviewing the record and seeing what Americans have allowed to happen with elections, the Supreme Court and the fake wars.

noloyalisti: really, generally Americans are idiots? hmmm...? I''m not a Bush fan but I disagree completely with that assertion.

Upbeat idiots, yes. That is not a slur, it is only reality. The mainstream media, who supported the invasion to make money and supported Bushoccio because he was willing to send people to die for profits, stopped reporting reality in Iraq.

OBAMA is the problem with America,..the lack of balance and justice- the lack of real CHANGE- If you keep focusing on something that is not feasible you will be disappointed and it will reinforce your belief that fighting for your country is bad- Don''t you want to WIN THE WAR on terror??!! Obama has not right to make statements having not been to IRAQ...it is MUTE.

Remember these are the same Americans who believed the lying war criminals about WMDs. And about our former buddy and biochemical weapons client Saddam being involved with 911. Oh yeah and supporting the absolute failure Butch with almost 90% approval. And many who think Obama is a Muslim. So you want to ask them for a reasonable valid opinion? Please.

Ariel133...Yes, let''s just have one war after another. Who wants peace. There''s tons of money to be made by constantly waging war so what are a few thousand American lives. I would like to see leadership that works to prevent war rather than one that is looking forward to the next one. While it is true that 9-11 was an attack on American soil it has been revealed afterward that it was preventable. We should concentrate our efforts on making America safer and try to use diplomacy to prevent future wars. If we can regain our respect among the other countries that used to be strong allies it will go a long way to preventing more war. It''s easy for you to sit in front of your computer and cheer for more war as long as you don''t have to go fight it. To quote John Lennon, "All we are saying is give peace a chance".

I am still waiting for someone to define, "victory". At this point, considering the cost in dollars and American lives lost, I would say that we have not achieved victory. While it is true that the fighting in Iraq has been reduced, there has really been no progress made in converting Iraq to a democracy. There probably will never be a time when Iraq is truly unified. And one must consider the rise in violence in Afghanistan. To remove troops from one country and send them to another really doesn''t constitute a victory. Any war changes from day to day. What looks to be progress one day can turn on a dime the next day. Obama seems to grasp this concept and is willing to act accordingly. Some of you call that flip floping but in reality it is just good sense. When we can bring all our troops home we will have achieved victory. The middle east countries should be allowed to determine their own fates. You cannot produce democracy at the point of a gun. Who are we to say that any country should accept our way and our way only? Let''s look for a way to leave that area in an orderly way and leave them to themselves. If they attack us again, then we should go after the attackers just like we should have gone after them after 9-11.

How can anyone say the war in Iraq is going well ? We are still hemoraghing trillions of U.S. tax dollars into the sands of Iraq, we still have 140,000 troops stuck there with no end in sight, and suicide bombers are killing people every single day. If that''s success, I''d HATE to see failure. This is just more lies from the Administration and its military puppets in advance of an election. No one believes anything the Republicans, or the military, say, nor should they.

Shoulda- woulda- coulda- too little too late- time to face facts- deal with reality- or go somewhere else. Be part of the solution no the problem- win the war and then win the next one- that is reality.

If Afghanistan was so important to Senator Obama, why did he not call at least one hearing with the Senate Subcommittee on European Affairs to discuss the direction of this particular war. Are you serious, Obama?

Yeah, right, he really cares..lol. All he cares about is getting elected, but you know what? This is all going to backfire on you. Americans don''t trust your empty rhetoric any more.

That''s one thing about the far-left liberal conspiracy theorists - they constantly have to change their theories based upon being proven wrong by the facts on the ground.

Ahem.

One month after 911, Ray Hunt [texas oil billionaire and Loyal Bushie] was appointed to the Presidents Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board [he also sits on the board of Halliburton]. Their advice? Get Iraqi oil, no matter how many American soldiers it kills.

Now Ray has a no-bid contract to exploit oil from Northern Iraq. He''s not even doing it through the Iraqi government, which Bush wants companies to do, he''s gone around them through the Kurds for higher profits. The gov''t will let him do it cuz he''s a Bush man.

Bush says the high cost of oil is a matter of ordinary Americans ''putting food on the table''. The truth? Its about texas billionaires being granted special advisory roles to get him to invade Iraq and then reaping massive profits from his doing so, while other Americans try on their new arms and legs.

I''ll believe we''ve won the war when we''re done paying for it. Till then, only Ray Hunt won the war.
