Obama, McCain Meet With Religious Leaders

From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic and John Bentley:

Both Barack Obama and John McCain held separate meetings with various religious leaders today - Obama with with evangelical, Protestant, and Catholic leaders; McCain with Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demetrios.

Obama's campaign said his closed door meeting in Chicago this afternoon is part of an ongoing faith outreach program. The press was not invited to the small meeting of approximately 30 participants. According to one campaign aide, some participants are not supporters and would not be meet with Obama if the media were present.

The meeting, which the campaign says has been planned for weeks now, includes Bishop Phillip Cousin, Rev. Stephen Thurston, and Dr. T Dewitt Smith. The participants include those from Chicago and outside of Chicago.

The meeting is intended to brief religious leaders on the state of the campaign as well as address concerns from the community. “This is not part of the church selection process,” Campaign Strategist, David Axelrod said referring to Obama’s recent departure from Trinity United Church of Christ.

Earlier today, John McCain met with Archbishop Demetrios today, the current archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, which makes him the highest ranking Orthodox Christian prelate in the western hemisphere. They met at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America in New York City.

The archbishop does not endorse political candidates, but he and McCain spoke about religious freedom, social justice, and the importance of voting, according to Father Mark Airey.

After their meeting, McCain was asked about not signing a letter asking for the release of a political prisoner in Turkey. He didn’t answer directly, but said he was “in favor of religious freedom all over world.” Archbishop Demetrios also chimed in, explaining that he did not bring up the issue of the political prisoner, that McCain did, and that McCain was “very much interested in religious freedom.”

and Obama himself%u2026 before TUCC%u2026.

Malcolm X%u2019s autobiography seemed to offer something different,%u201D Obama wrote.
%u201CHis repeated acts of self-creation spoke to me; the blunt poetry of his
words,
his unadorned insistence on respect, promised a new and uncompromising order,
martial in its discipline, forged through sheer force of will.%u201D

While working as a community organizer for a group of churches in Chicago,
Obama
was repeatedly asked to join Christian congregations, but begged off.

How can this man represent all Americans ?

Obama just doesn%u2019t get it%u2026 He needs to explain theses beliefs and stop insulting
Christians by claiming to be one..This is not Christianity !!

The Obamas have practiced Black
Theology from the writing of Marxist, James H. Cone%u2026 for 20 years !!!

this is what his church taught his daughters on Sundays%u2026

%u201CBlack theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the
goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people,
then he is a murderer and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is
to kill gods who do not belong to the black community. Black theology will
accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white
enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in black power which is the
power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at
their disposal. Unless God is participating in his holy activity, we must reject
his love.%u201D

For those who think Obama would do well in choosing Clinton as VP you are dead wrong. It will not only show how weak he is, but that he could not do it without her. IT also would show that the Unity you all speak of is not only in vain, but superficial, and inaccurate- neither are qualified or experianced. Bill Clinton does not deserve to be back in the White House- as first anything- after being impeached, and Hilllary is not a wise woman for staying with the disgusting cheat. If you want your taxes raised sky high then vote for a Democrat, you will surely regret that decision. This country needs to fogive Bush and the Republicans and think clearly on how more qualified they are as a whole. The Democratic Congress made you promises two years ago and have not come through. Have you all forgotten or are you enjoying the life in the dark enough to be disenchanted next January with a man who went to a Church for 20 years that preached hatred of this country he now wants to lead? OMG- wake up. MCCAIN 2008-2012

omaar, you may be indifferent but a lot of people care about whether a person has accepted Christ as their personal savior. McCain has stated that he knows that America is a "Christian" nation but won''t expand on what that means to the Hindus and Muslims and Jews and agnostics who are also a large percentage of the population that votes. As you can see by my name, I am a devil worshiper so I guess I too am indifferent.

Let us pray for:

An end to violence against our American Military.

A fair tax program that will allow for America to be strong.

A comprehensive energy policy.

Affordable medical insurance (car insurance, life insurance, disaster insurance).

Affordable and available prescription drugs.

Protection of our environment.

Bring all illegal and immoral politicians to justice, by a non-partisan Justice
Department.

A Congress and President that will stand up for the American People and not continue to support the fleece by BIG OIL COMPANIES!

Amen

The article states that Archbishop Demetrios is the highest ranking prelate in the western hemisphere; that is not correct. The Greek Orthodox Church, overseen by the Patriarch of Constantinople, is one of several Sees in the Orthodox Church. The number of Orthodox Christians of a particular See in a country or archdiocese does not give its hierarch ecclesiastical supremacy over other hierarchs in other Sees/jurisdictions.

Please do better fact checking next time.

Great, Mccain is getting Endorsed by the Southern Baptist, but ABC News says (Relucantly)

They Know John McCain has Attended this Arz. Baptist Church, though he Refuses to be Baptized, a Very Easy Ritual and Confess, with his Tongue, that Jesus Christ, is his Lord an Personal Savior.

But 2 Rites of Passage, that John McCain, for some reason Refuses to do, in 20 Yrs. of Attending this Church.

Sounds like a Scene Straight from the Movie, `The Omen`

if this were obama, the Media would be having a D@mn Field day with this Information.

Me, I`m Indifferent.

But I`ve Noticed the Media Contrast on Mccain`s Media Coverage on His So called Religion.
