Obama Meets With Clinton, His Campaign Dupes Press

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic

CHICAGO -- Barack Obama took the meaning of “secret meeting” to a different level last night, after he slipped away from the traveling press in order to meet with Hillary Clinton. While it is not uncommon for a presidential candidate and for the president to have private meetings, it is uncommon for those meetings to be as secretive and misleading as this one turned out to be.

The controversy began to develop after a campaign rally in Bristow, Virginia, when the press was whisked away to Dulles Airport outside of Washington, D.C., to board a flight to Chicago. According to campaign staffers, Obama had scheduled interviews with local Chicago television reporters and would meet up at the airport shortly. After waiting for Obama for over an hour, the situation on the plane quickly went from tiresome to alarming once the pilot informed the press that the doors had been locked and the plane was about to take off.

As the plane rolled down the tarmac, the press quickly realized that Obama had never boarded the flight and we had all been duped. Minutes later, communications director Robert Gibbs casually informed the press that Obama had stayed behind in Washington for “meetings”, without specifying who the meetings were with. As we began to frantically call our assignment desks to alert them that the presumptive Democratic nominee was running free in Washington, the plane took off for Chicago, leaving us trapped on a plane.

The tight-lipped Gibbs chose to brief the press on Obama’s whereabouts only after the plane was airborne.

“Sen. Obama is going to be in Washington for a little bit,” Gibbs explained. “Our schedule was running a little ahead of time so we had time for meetings that he wanted to do so we scheduled some meetings for him tonight and he'll fly back to Chicago a couple hours after we do.” At the time, Gibbs would not confirm that the meeting was with Hillary Clinton, but did say that the meeting was private at request of the other person.

"It wasn’t an attempt to deceive in anyway, it's just private meetings," he said.

However, Gibbs failed to explain why the press was fooled into believing that Obama would be on the flight to Chicago and why we were not given the chance to de-plane once we learned that Obama would be staying in Washington. He simply said, with a mischievous grin, “We could have sat on the runway for a couple of hours so we decided to go."

Upon landing in Chicago, Gibbs informed the weary travelers that Obama had indeed met with Clinton as part of the end of the primary process. Details surrounding the meeting were not released, nor was the location disclosed. Shortly thereafter, both campaigns released the following statement:

“Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November.”

To All Hillary Supporters:
I know you''re mad at Obama, but think about the Supreme Court and your children before you cast a vote for McCain.

The next president could appoint up to three Supreme Court Justices, replacing the more moderate and progressive judges which means loss of choice, gender equality, and so much more!!

Buy a clothespin for your nose; take a shot of the hard stuff. Do what you have to do for the future of our children. They''re counting on us.

FoxNews, Rush Limbaugh, mAnn Coulter all spew nothing but hate. Hate is the only reason some people have to justify voting against their own better interests. During the last Presidential Election in 2004 the Right Wing Media constantly stressed that Senator John Kerry was %u201Cvery French looking%u201D does anyone even know what a French looks like?

Why is it that in this great country we get caught up in the pity things in life? We are at a crossroad in this country. Back in the day, we were the melting pot, ensuring that immigrants, which is what we all are were fairly treated and we all meshed together to make this country great. But today we stand in a state of confusion about who will be the greatest (President) in this country. The whole world watching the greatest country being torn apart by hate. It is plain to see, we are becoming a nation of hate. Has this Black Man''s Presence in this Presidental Race really open our eyes to our hate for one another and the inability to come together in the face of repairing the divide in this country. I believe if it was any other minority if would still be the same. I shutter when I listen to Fox News especially Shawn Hannidity and listen to the hateful and hurtful commentaries that are spewed about Barack Obama.

Do you think Hillary offered the Vice President running mate position to Barack Obama?

If Obama becomes the winner, all Democrats will have to defend his patriotism, his radical left views, his Pastor and Church and God knows what else will turn up until the General election. Florida and Michigan will not forget that their voices were silenced either.

What is so sad, the Democrats had a prayer with Clinton: all the right voting blocs, she attracted big states, white men and women, military voters, Latinos, Jewish voters, Cuban voters, Catholics and Women. She fought for Michigan and Florida, the people mattered.

Now the Democrats have a man, a newcomer, that is strong with elitist and African Americans, wins states like Alaska and Hawaii and has a problem with all of those blocs of voters that Democrats need to win.

Democrats, had Senator Clinton, the strongest candidate in their grasp. Now the weaker of the two, Senator Obama, bubbles to the top with no credentials. Democrats truly blew it.

This is the first time in my life that I am NOT proud to be a Democrat. I am totally embarrassed of our candidate.

Clinton does not need Obama. Obama needs Clinton, without a doubt.

I will not vote this year along with many in my community. All of us are disgusted with the media coverage for all candidates, even President Bush, but especially for the relentless daily attacks on whites and Senator Clinton.

I am totally embarrassed to have to stand up for Obama, his wife and radical friends and pastors that surround this candidate. I will never be proud of Senator Obama pertaining to his treatment of Michigan and Florida voters. Florida is still raw since the last election and Michigan votes were indeed %u201Chijacked%u201D from Senator Clinton. This was appalling to watch and very disrespectful to American voters.

Now that Obama has blocked votes from Michigan and Florida and taken delegates from Senator Clinton he will win the primary. But was it really worth it for him to win the ruling not to seat Michigan and Florida and to lose those same states in November?

Americans are not stupid. Obama fought for the government. Hillary fought for the people. Who would want a President to not stand up for them?

If a meeting such as Obama had with Clinton takes place in such secrecy...what else will be secretively done if Obama should become president? Not a good start.

Very funny. I like the way the story is presented using words ''duped'', ''alarming'', ''trapped'', ''weary travelers'' etc. I like it.

I hope he offered her the Ambassadorship to Kabul. She can corkscrew in and dodge sniper fire while running to the limo.

Do they make pants suits in those camouflage patterns?
