Poll: Americans Support Meetings With Hostile Leaders

Over the past few weeks, Barack Obama and John McCain have been squabbling over whether or not a president should meet with hostile foreign leaders – and, if he does, under what conditions.

Now a Gallup poll suggests a majority of Americans believe their president should talk to the leaders of enemy countries.

Roughly two out of three of those polled say such diplomacy is a good idea – including about half of those Republicans surveyed.

When asked specifically whether or not the U.S. president should meet with the leader of Iran, nearly 60 percent of those polled said yes.

Obama has said he would meet with leaders of hostile countries without preconditions, arguing that "strong countries and strong presidents talk to their adversaries." (It should be noted that Obama's exact position on this issue is somewhat vague – he says there still need to be "preparations" before such a meeting were to take place, even if there aren't "preconditions.")

Both McCain and Hillary Clinton have criticized Obama for his position, suggesting it implies a naiveté and dangerous inexperience. President George W. Bush has implied that it amounts to the sort of appeasement that was employed in dealing with Nazis.

Appearing at a meeting of the Jewish lobbying group American Israel Public Affairs Committee today, McCain said, "It's hard to see what such a summit with [Iranian] President [Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad would actually gain, except an earful of anti-Semitic rants, and a worldwide audience for a man who denies one Holocaust and talks before frenzied crowds about starting another."

Also today, Ahmadinejad once again suggested Israel "will soon be destroyed."

"I must announce that the Zionist regime, with a 60-year record of genocide, plunder, invasion and betrayal is about to die and will soon be erased from the geographical scene," he said.

Sorta surprised that none of the wingnuts ended up over here screaming about appeasement.

Too bad they don''t know what the word actually means. They don''t understand that meeting and talking with your enemies is not appeasement. Appeasement is COMPLETELY GIVING IN to your enemies'' demands. A distinction completely lost on clowns.

When you refuse to talk with your enemy, you give EVERYONE the impression, both friend and foe, that you CAN NOT defend your position. That may well be true of Bush when the issue is Religious Extremist but it should NOT be for the NATION that has believed in the Seperation of Church and State since the FIRST CONGRESS!! YES we should sit down with them and expressed to them what WE the PEOPLE really stand for! Using OUR military is the EASY thing to do, it''s also a very stupid thing to do. That Miliary is SUPPOSED to be used ONLY in as a LAST resort. Sieg Heil Bush

Ahmadinejad (I%u2019m a dinner jacket) has a very low approval rating amongst the voting population of Iran. The elected President of Iran has a lower approval rating then George W. Bush. Ahmadinejad%u2019s approval rating is about 15% this is level to our Vice President Richard Cheney%u2019s approval numbers.

The majority of the people from Iran wish for their country to be on par and associated with Europe. The Iranians want their country to be a tourist destination and point of cultural prosperity. Ahmadjinejad is very similar to President Bush in seeking support from an extreme base by saber rattling Irsrael and the United States.

George Bush, and now his adherent protege John McCain along with Iran President Ahmadinejad all need each other to continue to promote their political agendas.

why is this even a discussion? of course we should talk to our enemies. the first thing we can accomplish would be to find out WHY they are our enemies. this alone is valuable and would help us develop a relevant national security policy... DUH ! !

Does McCain know something we dont know? Bush has been sabber rattling against Iran -- This seems more like Hillary Clinton''s "totally Obliterate Iran" remark.

Our military is stretched so how would we achieve this Insane plan?
God Help Us!

Pray Bush doesn''t do anything before January 20, 2009 and that Barack Obama wins in November.

If Bush and McCain, Clinton and Madalene Albright, Knew So Dam Much...

Why are USA Troops in Iraq & Aghanistan, Oppose to Attacking Iraq ?

Why has`nt the Bush Administration, Attacked Saudi Arabia & The United Arab Emirates, They`re the Ones Directly involved in the (911 Plane Attacks) !!

Note: Israel has No chance of being WIPED, they are the Only Middle East Country, with Nuclear Weapons (150) even is they have only 75-50-25, it would be ENOUGH, to Obliterarte Many Nations.

So America & Israel are in No Imminent Nuclear Danger !!

If this Farce Continues, China & Russia are going to get INVOLVED and World War 3 will offcially begin !!

Think About That ...Hmmmm

Well, duh... Bush and now McCain are out of step with the rest of America. McCain just wants to continue Bush''s failed foreign policy that has made America less safe. I think you should be able to talk to anyone. That is what mature people do. Of course Bush is about as mature as a figety first grader.
