Starting Gate: And So It Begins

The campaign thus far has been a comparatively non-negative one. Sure, there have been those “red phone” moments and, on the Republican side at least, some of the traditional negative or “comparative” ads. But that brand of politics has been punished for the most part and the probable nominations of two candidates who have built their political power in part on their appeal outside of their parties seems to hold the promise of an uplifting, great debate this fall.

But this is politics and even if the two presidential candidates remain above the fray, they have little control over the eventual tone of the overall debate. That was demonstrated recently in North Carolina when the state Republican Party shrugged off John McCain’s calls to cease airing an ad about Obama and the Rev. Wright controversy. And that was like playing tiddlywinks compared to what some of the shadowy 527 groups are capable of.

The challenge for the general election might not be staying positive – it might be figuring out how to make it look like the other side went negative first.

Both McCain and Barack Obama have put a great emphasis on the positive tone they intend to conduct the campaign in but that only sets an impossible bar. As Obama has discovered at times during the campaign, it’s not difficult for your opponent to turn even the mildest criticism around on you. Yesterday provided a hint of what we may see a lot of in the coming months.

It all began a couple of weeks ago when McCain, in noting that a political adviser for the Hamas organization had said the group liked Obama, more or less said that the group, described by even Obama as a terrosist organization, had made something of an endorsement. McCain was asked about his comments on the Daily Show earlier this week and he said that the episode is “indicative of how some of our enemies view America. And I guarantee you, they're not going to endorse me."

That didn’t sit well with the Democratic frontrunner who then accused McCain of engaging in “smear” campaigning and then went said this: “For him to toss out comments like that, I think, is an example of him losing his bearings as he pursues this nomination. We don't need name-calling in this debate."

McCain adviser Mark Salter then responded with a memo to “interested parties” accusing Obama of playing the “age card”: “First, let us be clear about the nature of Senator Obama's attack today: He used the words 'losing his bearings' intentionally, a not particularly clever way of raising John McCain's age as an issue. This is typical of the Obama style of campaigning. We have all become familiar with Senator Obama's new brand of politics. First, you demand civility from your opponent, then you attack him, distort his record and send out surrogates to question his integrity. It is called hypocrisy, and it is the oldest kind of politics there is.”

And so the general election campaign begins with an argument over which candidate is being more negative. It’s the kind of game nobody wins but is an inevitable product of a political campaign.

Senator McCain has lost his ethical bearings. Trying to link Senator Obama to Hamas is despicable.

How anyone could give deference to this garbage is beyond my comprehension. Many republican, mass media and pundits simply do not get it yet.

These old personal attacks are worn out relics of the politics of the past. If the candidate does not speak to the real issues they are going to be dead in the water, just like Clinton last Tuesday. If you bet against the intelligence of the American people as has been done in the past you are going to lose.

I hear how Senator Obama has no experience.

No experience driving this country into a ditch over the last 8 years maybe.

Vote for more pandering about gas tax holidays that will do nothing but give big oil a huge profit and give the consumer little or nothing, that puts us further in to debt, that lets our infrastructure continue to disintegrate, that throws 100s of thousand of people across the country out of work?

Vote for supreme court judges who will set the country back 50 years on basic rights of its citizens and allows politicians to use the Constitution as toilet paper?

Vote for a continued never ending war in Iraq that does not make us safer nor address our real enemy in Afghanistan?

Vote for wire taps, torture, suspension of Habeas Corpus and dictatorship?

Vote for people who promote Xenophobia, religious intolerance and homophobia?

Not me,

My vote is for Senator Obama.

For this to be a clean campaign, media orgs have to stop playing dumb when catapulting the smears of surrogates while simultaneously extolling the virtues of the beneficiary every time their "independent" orgs smear on their behalf, as you''ve already done with McCain.

Effendi Snob-oma has lost his ethical, mental and intellectual bearings if he thinks he gets a free pass to the WH without being vetted. We will get to the bottom of Effendi Snob-oma''s history and this is just the tip of the iceberg. The little ***** is quite arrogant and he needs a good swift kick in the head. Wake up Effendi Snob-oma, it''s just a question of time before we get to know you real, real well.

. If Obama puts Hillary on the ticket, say goodbye to the Democratic Party - if you think Obama has baggage, with the two of them on the ticket, it will be a recipe for disaster. I know I would vote McCain if Hillary insists on a joint Democratic ticket. If Obama becomes POTUS, he could better reward Mrs. Clinton for her tiredless efforts with an ambassadorship to Bosnia (just watch out for sniper fire, Mrs. Clinton!)

DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS - TAKE NOTICE

-----------ROE v. WADE-----------

Two of the current justices of the United States Supreme Court will probably retire within the next four years. One is 75 and the other is 84. This will give the new president the ability to nominate two new justices. If McCain is elected you can be sure the new justices will be just like Roberts, Scalia and Thomas: willing to overturn ROE v. WADE. So think when you vote!!!

because southern dems who''''ll never be able to deliver their states'''' electoral votes in the general election wanted him as the nominee, which is certainly as fair as dems in the swing states wanting her as the nominee. the comment was that clinton knows how to beat mccain in a general election, not how to beat obama in southern democratic primaries and caucuses.

YOU have to be from the South... that''s the ONLY people on this planet who would make a stupid statement like this. You seem to think that voters who MAY have voted for Hillary are going to NOT vote for OBAMA... I''m afraid YOU are in for quite a surprise. The Republican Party is, for the most part, non existent in the Mid West, West, North, North East... those voters and the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of New voters will produce victory after victory for Obama. For McSame to win any of then he must not only attract a solid Majority of the Democrat Vote but HOPE the Young and Independents stay home. Not going to happen Sparky! That''s an Avalanche headed right at the Republican Party and the ONLY hope McSame has is to convince those voters he''s really a Democrat. After the Judge Comment the other day... that card is out of the deck. SIEG HEIL Y''ALL. ROFLMAO

Why doesn''t it surprise me to hear that McCain is now taking the word the of a leader of a terrorist camp. He has lost his bearings, and that has nothing to do with his age. There are plenty of people his age and older who have a better sense of what would be good for this country.
I guess the people who are disappointed with Bush, are still wanting to give him one more chance by getting McCain into the White House.

I don''t think it''s playing the age card to point out that John McCain is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo OLD!

But it''s not his age that the problem. It''s that his senility is growing more obvious everyday! We can not afford to have him have one of his famous "senior Moments" and launch a war or try to order someone killed or forget to get his diaper changed before meeting a foreign dignitary.

The Hamas endorsement of Obama did happen. Any Campaign has right to make such a rousing endorsement a mater for legitimate discussion.

Obama''s return comment was curious. He questioned whether McCain had "lost his bearings". Wasn''t that a George Bush perry in the GOP primaryawhile back? Wasn''t Bush challenging McCain''s sanity? Isn''t that what Obama is doing with this comment? Do a subtle negative comment and show hypocrisy when a negative comment is returned.

Unfortunately the sanity slam exposed Obama''s penchant for subtle sarcasm and put public attention right back on the Hamas endorsement.

When the Democrats attack John McCain because of his age, they bring older voters to the side of the Arizona senator.John McCain is certainly not too old to be President.Ronald Reagan was one of our greatest Presidents and he served well into his seventies.Konrad Adenaur was Chancellor of West Germany into his eighties. He managed to keep West Germany free during the Cold War.You do not have to be young to be a great leader.

I also come from a long line of Democrats but I have to face the fact that the Democratic Party isn''t what it used to be.

Two things have become evident to me even though they don''t
make any sense at all.

The first one is that the Democratic Party Leadership
knows damm well that if Obama where to actually make
it past the Republicans and get in the White House, the results will be disastrous.

The second one is that the Democratic leadership
is throwing this election.

I know it''s hard to believe. I know it doesn''t make any sense. But it''s happening everyday right in front of us, and I can''t go on telling myself that it isn''t.
