Clinton Rolls Out New Strategy: Ditches Primary, Moves Toward General Election

(CBS)

From CBS News’ Fernando Suarez:

CHARLESTON, W.VA. -- Hillary Clinton brushed off any thoughts that she will be dropping out of the race today, unveiling a newly polished message for voters: forget about the delegate math, because it “may be complicated.”

Her new strategy seems to be to divert attention away from the number of delegates she needs to capture the nomination and focus voters attention instead on the electoral votes needed to beat John McCain in November. She’s been winning key states necessary to have the electoral votes to beat John McCain, she argues, as well as picking up important groups of voters.

“The delegate math may be complicated, but the electoral math is easy,” she explained. “We need 270 electoral votes to win in November. It’s what we have to have.” Clinton went to say she’s appealing to a broad cross-section. “I’m winning Catholic voters, Hispanic voters, blue collar voters, and seniors, the kind of people that Senator McCain will be fighting for in the general election. Some call you swing voters, I call you Americans!”

Clinton’s message comes just days after squeaking out a victory in Indiana and being trounced in North Carolina. Even though there is mounting pressure and growing speculation that Clinton will drop out of the Democratic contest, she is showing no signs of an impending departure.

“My campaign is winning swing states,” Clinton said, pleading with voters. “That’s why I am campaigning hard in West Virginia. I know that according to the polls – and I take those with a grain of salt – I’m doing well here, but I want to do really well!”

Clinton knows that any chance she has of staying in the race is pulling off big wins in the remaining primaries. “West Virginia is a test. It’s a test for me and Senator Obama because for too long we have let West Virginia slip out of the Democratic column,” she said. “No Democratic president has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia.”

All signs seem to point to Obama as the eventual Democratic nominee, but so far that has not dissuaded Clinton from campaigning, as she holds events today in West Virginia, South Dakota, and Oregon before the end of the day.

I think Hillary should win the democratic primary. She stands for all that we Americans hold proud. I for one do not want a candidate who does not hold his hand over heart when we say the pledge. There need be any other words said. What is wrong with you people.

I LOVE YOU HILLARY! Myself and my entire family, cousins, uncles, aunts, grandmother, parents, sister, bro-in-law have REFUSED to vote for Obama. We cannot support naiveness, inexperience, arrogance, and passiveness. We will vote McCain (even the two liberals in the family are voting McCain if Clinton is not the nominee).

Just hold out for 4 yrs. Obama will lose to the GOP machine, no doubt about it! Wait it out...America will vote Clinton.

if she is showing us how a person evolves who is exposed to big power and big money for lots of years, heaven help whoever is elected. if obama can chuckle and poke fun at himself despite being treated like a superstar, maybe he can stand clear of this kind of being corrupted by power and ambition. i sure hope so.

You may have heard of Rev. John Hagee, the McCain supporter who said God created Hurricane Katrina to punish New Orleans for its homosexual "sins." Well now meet Rev. Rod Parsley, the televangelist megachurch pastor from Ohio who hates Islam. According to David Corn of Mother Jones, Parsley has called on Christians to wage war against Islam, which he considers to be a "false religion." In the past, Parsley has also railed against the separation of church and state, homosexuals, and abortion rights, comparing Planned Parenthood to Nazis.

John McCain actively sought and received Parsley''s endorsement in the presidential race. McCain has called Parsley "a spiritual guide," and he hasn''t said whether he shares Parsley''s vicious anti-Islam views. That''s because the mainstream media refuses to ask. And so, we''ve taken matters into our own hands, joining Mother Jones to present the truth about McCain''s pastor:

Watch the video: http://bravenewfilms.org/watch/25568244/38133?utm_source=rgemail

Since the media won''t question McCain about his deeply bigoted pastor, it''s up to you to call attention to this issue. Make McCain''s pastor problem a major story by forwarding this video to your family, friends, and colleagues. Digg it! Anything to spread the word.

We can''t let McCain get away with aligning himself with a religious leader who''s called for an all-out war on Islam, someone who draws no distinctions between Muslims and violent Islamic extremists. Now is the crucial time to act.

The only reason Hillary has not pulled out yet is obvious.

She has LOANED her campaign nearly $12 million dollars; at the moment there is not enough money in her campaign to repay her, if she quits then the donations stop, which means she has a problem recovering her millions.

However if she is clever she can continue and keep making requests for donations from foolish Clinton supporters.
Once enough gullible people have made donations and there is enough money to pay her back THEN suddenly she will announce that she is quitting for the good of the Party !

Does that make sense to you Clinton supporters?

Now go to her website immediately and pay back her loans!

If you are wondering why Hillary won''t pull out, it is because the Clintons are involved in the Paul vs. Clinton lawsuit accusing him of campaign fraud and stealing money from a close ''friend.'' If Hillary wins the nomination, she is exempt from testifying in the case now going on in California.

If you are wondering why the press isn''t reporting on this, it is because Hillary Clinton successfully filed a SLAPP (strategic lawsuit against public participation) so the US press cannot report on the proceedings of the case.

They are ''throwing the kitchen sink'' and prolonging the race at all costs to save their own skin, not yours.

I can see now that most bloggers have not been to College. Hillary should stop staying up at night trying to think of new tricks... so that she could beat Obama. The only thing that she has in her favor is the remaining spineless superdelegates who are not committing to a candidate. Commit now or die. In the future if we still have these useless superdelegates, they should be forced to commit to a delegate no more than 100 hours after their State votes.

First it was Iowa. Obama then won it. Then it was "States don%u2019t matter, delegates do." Obama won more states and delegates. Then Hillary said, forget about his wins, lets move on to Super Tuesday
He did pretty good there too.
Then it was all about popular vote.
Obama won the popular vote
Then it was NC/Indiana -
OK, yea, he pretty much won those too. Now Hillary Clinton and her idiot advisors and supporters are making an attempt to raise the Obama bar to West Virginia and Kentucky%u2026White Voters? As if we got here with only the support of African Americans. Please, give me a break. Hillary and her supporters are appearing more and more like the joke of the day. Remember %u201CThe Emperor With No Clothes%u201D.

Next she is going to explain how she is the preferred candidate as she has the best diplomatic relations with Lichtenstein.
... or something else equally disillusional, unrelated and random.

Obama does not have the requisite number of delegates for the nomination; he has no presumptive lock on the nomination. The Democratic nomination process calls for all states to vote and if the candidates come up short in delegates, then the superdelegates must select the best experienced, qualified candidate for the presidency using the independent judgment and that is Sen. Clinton. Obama is unqualified and inexperienced for the presidency. The future of America and qualifications should not be trumped by his skin color and fear of alienating the black vote. Best qualified should be the unyielding principle, just like the rule of law.

If the nomination is swiped from Sen. Clinton, Obama will crash and burn in November and the Democratic Party will be a train wreck because of him. Radical left wing George McGovern lost every single state except one state in the general election. Obama, another radical left wing liberal, will repeat that exact debacle which superdelegates were created to prevent.

Sen. Hillary Clinton is the best experienced, qualified candidate to debate, fight and win against McCain.

When is the repo person going to take Hillary''s bus away?

ABC reported she''s $10 million in debt. Internally, Clintons supporters have whispered it''s really $20+ million in debt.

"All signs SEEM..." She''s not a quitter and she shouldn''t be. All of the dominant media pundits are completely delusional in their continual efforts to disparage and dump on her. I won''t even watch CNN or MSNBC...any of them...they are TOXIC.
It ain''t over until every primary is complete, and then....

Obama and the people who endorse him forget that half of all Democrats voted AGAINST him. All this shoving Clinton out the door, and superdelegates jumping on the bandwagon is not doing anything to endear Obama to Clinton''s supporters. Has everyone forgotten------he needs those supporters. There is already a huge movement to not vote for him. Also, he has blocked re-votes in Fl. Does he think he can win the general without FL?
Democrats had better tread carefully. The @sinine behavior of Tim Russert and Obama supporters is enough for me to vote for McCain.

Hillary Clinton likes to make up her own rules as she goes along. We are not in a general election yet so those rules are not in play. She''s very good at pointing out rules she likes but not good at all at following those she dislikes. For her to assume that her backers will not support Obama tells me that she will not encourage them too. With her direction, they will do as she bids. Unfortunately I see more of Bush in her every day. Spoiled and petulant.
