On Conference Call, Clinton Campaign Spins Debate

On a conference call with reporters this morning, Clinton Campaign Communications Director Howard Wolfson and Deputy Communications Director Phil Singer made the case that Barack Obama had, in Wolfson's words, "a very bad night" on Wednesday.

Why? The debate, and, more specifically, two issues that came up. The first involved questionnaires that Obama apparently filled out in the 1990s backing a handgun ban. Wolfson criticized the Obama campaign for saying he had not seen the questionnaire and the candidate for not giving a "clear answer" when asked about it last night. He suggested Obama explain "how his handwriting could be on it without his actually seeing it."

The other issue being pushed hard by the Clinton campaign concerned Bill Ayers, a former Weather Underground leader and Chicago professor with whom Obama has a loose relationship. As the New York Times notes, "In the early 1970s, the Weathermen, who took their name from a line in a Bob Dylan song, claimed responsibility for bombing the Capitol, the Pentagon, the State Department Building and banks, courthouses and police stations."

On the call, Wolfson was challenged on why the Clinton campaign was pushing Obama's ties to Ayers considering the fact that Bill Clinton pardoned Linda Evans and Susan Rosenberg, two members of the Weather Underground, in 2001.

Wolfson responded that he was "not aware of either of them hosting a political event for Senator Clinton at their homes." He also said he did not know if Hillary Clinton had raised objections to her husband's decision.

The Clinton campaign also went back to the argument that Clinton is more electable than Obama – an argument that may have taken a hit when Clinton said last night that Obama could beat John McCain in the fall. Singer said that Obama's campaign has outspent the Clinton campaign 2-1 over the past two weeks and 3-1 overall in Pennsylvania, and called Obama's expenditures "eye-popping." (Obama, he said, spent $3.4 million this week alone.)

"If Sen. Obama can't win under these circumstances, it will confirm in my view that Hillary Clinton is the strongest candidate to win in the fall," Singer said.

Those were important questions to typical white people like me. My husband fought and died for our country, and we have a right to ask him anything we like.
Obama, is arrogant and thinks he is above it all. He really does not have a clue what white America is all about. He has surrounded himself with radicals and racist and attending a church for 20 years that is dedicated to Black Africa. His preacher is stuck in the 50%u2019s preaching hate and racial divide. And after reading
Michelles'''' thesis (they tried to get off the internet) she has always had a chip on her shoulder, even though affirmative action got her to Princeton.

Obama is not for all Americans.

The debate looked like a copy of Billary - same anger, same gossip orientation, and both mediator ..- it were them to look elitist.

ABC worse job ever.
Shame on you, ABC.
As for Clinton- they will say whatever to win : that is exactly what we see.
Annoying.

I tried to watch the debate last night, but could only find a rather banal and nasty travesty of it by the National Enquirer. George Stephanopoulos and Charles Gibson have clearly given up any pretense of working for a serious new network, but they have a sterling career ahead of them in bear baiting.
Peter Jennings must be spinning in his grave and I can only believe that the ABC editorial team was having a mental moment when they allowed a past Clinton aide (Mr. George Stephanopoulos) participate in this debacle as a supposed impartial moderator.
I agree that Senator Obama was not on top of his game. I don%u2019t think he was ever able to get into his stride, and he seemed bewildered by the unwillingness of anyone to deal with real issues. It%u2019s hard for a true gentleman to understand the level of muck in which less honorable people can wallow.
Shame on ABC; last night was an unmitigated disgrace.

ABC George S and Charlie G were not "journalists", but rather appalling "gotcha" entertainment guides. We used to watch George S on Sunday mornings, but you can rest assured that will NEVER happen again after last night. This was NOT a debate - this was a circus and they gave HRC all the latitude to continue shooting sniper fire at Barack. I wish he were not so much of a gentleman and instead that he would just shoot back at her with all the dirty tricks she has thrown at him. As far as ABC is concerned, they ought to be ASHAMED of themselves! They will never get another dime from our family''s salary as we will NEVER turn to ABC again after last night. They will never get another chance to show us anything! SHAME ON ABC!

The so-called "debate" last night was disgraceful. Sophomoric, inane, insulting questions and an obvious Clinton bias illustrate why ABC should never be allowed to host one of these events again. One can only hope that the good people of Pennsylvania will see this sham for what it was- a political hatchet job with complicit media involved. Boycott ABC!!!

Obama walked out alive. Considering the circumstances he had a great night. He was obviously sabotaged. Clinton supporters may believe that they somehow won but the results will be apparent at the polls. Obama will win the nomination and hillary will go down in history as the fool that she has proven herself to be. Those ABC guys will be forgotten or remembered as the petty figures that they are.

Bill and Hillary are Filthy Rich Elitist Now, with all that Arab Money, they have..Huh

As the rumination continues over Barack Obamas comments about economically-depressed small town voters, statements made by Bill Clinton on the same topic -- uttered while he was running for president in 1991 -- have now surfaced.

Bill Clinton: "The reason (George H. W. Bushs)Tactic works so well now is that you have (All these Economically Insecure White People) who are Scared To Death," Clinton was quoted saying by the Los Angeles Times in September 1991.

A couple months later, Joe Klein, writing for the Sunday Times, reported that Clinton made the following remarks:

Bill Clinton: 1991 "You know, he [Bush Sr.] wants to Divide US Over RACE. Im from the South. I understand this.

When their economic policies fail, when the countrys coming apart rather than coming together, what do they do? They find the (Most Economically Insecure White Men) and Scare the Living Daylights out of them !!

Someone needs to tell Gibson and Steph that a journalist job is not to make candidates "uncomfortable", as conservatice David Brooks asserts, but to hold them accountable -- FOR THINGS THEY ACTUALLY MIGHT HAVE DONE.

You don''t make stuff up about Jesus to "test" him, or see how he handles stress. You report what he said, and hold your criticism until he DOES something that needs to be criticized.

I thought Obama had a horrid night. He seem arrogant, defensive, rigid, and frankly- perturbed. He kept making nasty "roll of the eye" faces. Also, am I the only one that sees the arrogance thing....he''s snobby...watch his mannerisms. When he listens or speaks, he points his nose in the air like he''s above the rest of us. Snotty, snobby Obama...go back to Chicago!

Obama for once, was not given "special" treatment, and he did not do well. I''m glad all of these issues were brought to the general public''s attention, because not everyone watches CNN, Fox, etc.

It isn''t just Wolfson who thinks Obama had a bad night. By most accounts he didn''t do so well. It is no surprise. This is the first debate
that they didn''t handle him with kid gloves. He also didn''t get to follow all of Clinton''s answers where he basically restates her position. He fumbled a lot and was not concise. He rambled and didn''t provide specifics very well.
It seemed like he had no idea how to handle tough questions. It goes to show you how tentative the media has been with him. I don''t think it has done him any favors. He doesn''t seem ready to take on the Republicans at all.

For those keeping score at home, Wolfson - 5 lies (bad night, clear answer, handwriting, one each for hosted events) and a parting-shot hyperbole by Singer - a campaign humming with liars.
