Obama Not Taking Wisconsin For Granted

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

CHICAGO -- Barack Obama' campaign is trying to stop a Hillary Clinton comeback in Wisconsin by spending more time and money in the state. They're betting that the Wisconsin primary will be much closer than expected and, as a result, have decided to continue campaigning in state through tomorrow evening.

Just because the campaign has made that decision doesn't mean Mother Nature is cooperating; Obama had one event scheduled in Kaukauna, Wis. today but it was canceled due to weather conditions. Obama will most likely appear on several television interviews in the state instead.

While the campaign has launched an aggressive television advertising campaign in Wisconsin for over a week now, Obama has only held a marginal lead over Clinton. In the latest poll, WISC-TV poll, Obama leads Clinton by only 5 points, 47 percent to 42 percent.

Obama strategist, David Axelrod and Clinton strategist, Howard Wolfson, appeared on CBS' Face the Nation this morning, where the two got into a heated discussion about Clinton’s call for a debate in Wisconsin.

Face the Nation host, Bob Schieffer, asked Axelrod if Obama has decided not to accept additional debates because he deems himself to be the frontrunner.

“If you're ahead, you don't debate; if you're not ahead, you say `let's debate.' Isn't that really what you're doing here?” Schieffer said.

Axelrod argued that the additional two debates in the next five days are plenty; however Wolfson accused Axelrod of not debating in Wisconsin because he is ahead.

“The Obama strategy here is essentially to debate in states where they're behind, but not debate in states where they're ahead,” Wolfson argued.

Axelrod said the statement was “nonsense” and noting that the upcoming debates are national.

“Eight million people watched the debate from California, and I guarantee you they weren't all Californians. Most of them were in other parts of the country. So that's an empty argument as far as I'm concerned,” Axelrod said.

“We're going to have two national debates. I think they're going to be well watched all across this country because people understand the importance of this campaign.”

Meantime, Obama supporters Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., and Gov. Jim Doyle, D-Wis., are accusing Clinton of launching a negative campaign in Wisconsin.

“She only arrived in the state yesterday and we have more of this stuff going on,” Doyle said.

Kennedy said he is “shocked and surprised” by a Clinton pamphlet that is circulating in Wisconsin, arguing that Obama’s health care plan is not universal. He described the pamphlet as “a misrepresentation and wrong” and said he would not support Obama if his plan were not universal.

Kennedy said both Obama and Clinton’s health care plans are universal, but that that the two can have differences on specifics.

“It doesn’t have to be this way, they can have differences,” Kennedy argued.

“What is not legitimate is to undermine the central position of Barack Obama not being for universal comprehensive coverage,” Kennedy added.

“That is the kind of distortion that we had back in ’94, and misrepresentation and that is fundamentally wrong.”

However, FactCheck.org, a non-partisan website run by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, backs up Clinton's claim in a recent report that Obama's plan is not universal.

Obama will be back in Wisconsin tomorrow evening after a brief campaign stop in Ohio.

obama is ok for chicago,,but not for the United States nationally or internationally,Obama has nothing solid. Clinton has all the who what when where and whys with solutions and plans in hand, ready to lead ,she is the only one who can withstand the republican machine and WIN and the only one to turn the pages to continue to make changes to turn this country around . obama is empty hot air, dont buy the HYPE
there is no movement when people are misguided and lied to. the true and real and only candidate is H Clinton she is ready and prepared ,globally groomed and has a proven record of responsibility and everything that obama lacks.

The way Obama rants on and on in his speeches about Hillary he is starting to sound like that Penelope character on Saturday Night Live, I do everything better, I did that before you did, I already said that, I invented that before you did. What''s next? is Obama going to tell Al Gore he invented the Internet first and so he already did that too and it was better?

Barack Obama always seem to borrow what he needs to say next.

If he had six years in the Senate there wouldnt be a problem finding his own words.

Barack Obama is not divisive, he is a "uniter".

We need a President who will not play the old politics, Barack has a clear vision and it is to bring America and its citizens to a place of prosperity , equal rights, affordable health care and bring our troops home.

BARACK OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT

Unfortunately, I think Hilary may win.

It is just like we experiened in NH. Media hypes up expectation of Obama win in spite of a couple of new polls indicating otherwise. In addition, Wisconsin voters received similar negative mailers to the one sent to NH voters. The Wisconsin mailers contain false and misleading information about the Obama''s healthcare plan. The accusation was originally posted on NYT before, discussed and rebutted. The NH one contained false and misleading information on Obama''s position on women''s right to choose and also sent out 48 hours before the primary. Anyway, it''s too late. Wisconsin voters are hard working nice white people. They will never doubt abot it. It will never cross their mind if Clinton put a false information. They don''t follow the news like us.

It is amazing. This sort of tactic seems to work all the time. Ironically, the same tactic was used by Carl Rove for Mr. Bush''s successful Whitehouse run''s.

Old establishment member,Hillary Clinton took for granted that she would be crowned as the democratic candidate no later than February 5th and that all democrats would naturally vote for her. Please notice that even today, Mrs. Clinton feels no need to share her income tax information as the other candidates have done. Her husband has yet to divulge the donors and the amts donated to his presidential library...as required by law. Perhaps while the Clintons are sitting around on the furniture that they stole upon leaving the White House, they are now laughing at the poor souls who still want to believe in them and their claim to represent "middle America".

Hillary Clinton has had big leads in the Wisconsin polls for months and the Clinton play to make it look like Obama has had the lead is a ploy to hope he takes it for granted and then they could win and claim a major comeback victory. They play dirty and are not above doing anything to win. Same old manipulatons of people. I want to believe that we the American people are not as STUPID as Hillary thinks we are since that is what she and her campaign are betting on. She was polling with double digit leads and now the polls show Obama slightly ahead. Way to Go Obama in not falling for the Clinton''s latest ploy and gaining on her in spite of her negative media campaign. The media says there is little difference between the policies of both canidates. There is is huge difference. His policies and plans are well thought out and will solve the problems. If Hillary''s big promises were implemented the consequences to the overall big picture would equal disaster. Barack Obama sees the big picture and isn''t just saying anything to win. God Save Us From Hillary! Thank you Barack!
