Huckabee Marches On

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

LITTLE ROCK, ARK. -- There wasn’t any expectation for a win. Mike Huckabee didn’t stay in Maryland, Virginia or Washington, D.C. to make the usual rounds to polling sites this morning and instead hopped on a plane bound for his home state. He retreated with close family and friends to a private dinner club to watch the results.

After it was clear there was no chance of winning Virginia - the only state where his campaign figured he might have a possibility of winning - a notably muted Huckabee appeared at the news conference to announce he had called John McCain to congratulate him on his victory.

“Obviously I had hoped he would be calling me this evening and for a while, it looked like he in fact might,” he said. “But when the urban votes came in, it wasn’t enough to close the margin.”

Early data showed Huckabee leading by a few percentage points but he soon fell almost ten points behind.

“We march on,” Huckabee said at the press conference. “Every time we win, we’re ecstatic. Every time we don’t win, we’re disappointed but we’re not knocked out.”

Huckabee insisted that he would not drop out of the race until a candidate secured 1,191 delegates. Until then, he said, he would be the “solid conservative” in the race; exit poll results from Virginia showed his support from self-identified Conservative voters outpacing that for McCain.

McCain’s communications director Jill Hazelbaker said it was “mathematically impossible” for Huckabee to secure the 1,191 delegates after today’s results.

Huckabee responded, “We understand in terms of the conventional process, barring something could happen along the way [to] the campaign with Senator McCain, or if he doesn’t acquire enough delegates – that’s really the possibility – that it could go to the convention...While it may be mathematically impossible to see it could play out right now, I know this: right now nobody has the 1,191 delegates and therefore it would be a little premature to quit until the game has actually come to a conclusion.”

When a reporter asked if Huckabee was acting out of self-interest and against the “greater good of the party,” a provoked Huckabee challenged him. “Why would they think that?” he asked not once, but twice, waiting for a response. Huckabee said he had only heard that argument from McCain supporters, not from “any officials within the party.”

“It really would be an admission of extraordinary weakness in our party if we could not handle…having a real election. I thought that was the whole point of politics, that you have elections.

Huckabee called the next several weeks “very intense weeks where a lot of delegates are at stake and a lot will be decided as far as the long term impact of where this process is going.” He listed North Carolina, Ohio, Vermont, and Rhode Island on the short list of states he will be campaigning. He leaves for Wisconsin tomorrow.

Mike Huckabee is a role model for society. A champion for human life, both old and young.

Obama and Clinton are not good for society. They want to make it easier to exterminate innocent human beings through federally funded abortions.

More than 50 million little kids have been exterminated through abortions, more than all the wars and diesese combined for the last 100 years.

Those who vote for Obama and Clinton turn a blind eye away from these little children and instead look at their own selfishness desires and make up excuses as why it is acceptable to do this atrocity.

John McCain is a war hero but he doesnt have same desire as Mike Huckabee does to overturn this terriable law.

Conservatives can not allow the liberal''''s to further increase this atrocity on human life.

John McCain said he would be John Kerry''''s Vice President when he was running 4 years ago. John McCain just doesnt have the burning flame as Mike Huckabee does when it comes to the sanctity of human life.

Mike Huckabee has earned your respect, he has dug hard in this race even with all the great odds against him. He needs your help now with a vote so he can help out the innocent children and poor elderly people.

How DARE McCain disenfranchise the millions of conservative voters who will never vote for him! Huckabee supporters are more than aware of the mathematical logistics involved in garnering the 1191 delegates needed for the nomination- BUT, we also know that it is very much possible to prevent McCain from reaching that total, and force a brokered convention. That is the only fair and correct way for this process to conclude, because McCain has alienated conservatives, and we deserve a voice in the selection of the Republican candidate. Huckabee%u2019s support is growing exponentially every day- more and more people are discovering that he is NOT just the choice of the religious right, but that his stands on illegal immigration (and excellent plan to fully address it) and Second Amendment rights and myriad others appeal to those who have carefully researched them, and are the best to take this country in the right direction. Help us to restore America%u2019s economy. Help us to select a Republican candidate who CAN defeat the Democratic ticket in November%u2026because McCain surely can%u2019t.

Dear jbrewster7:

If Mike Huckabee was as bad as you claim him to be, why did Arkansas voters vote for him three to one over McCain last week?

The blogger doth protest too much, methinks.

Huckabee is a good man with a good message - and we need more like him leading the affairs of our country. However, there''s a time when dreaming needs to give way to reality, and then you go forward and make the best of it.

The delegate numbers just don''t add up, and we need someone leading us who can do simple math, especially when it comes to dollars and cents. The longer Mike stays in, the more I wonder about his ability to do the math....

It''s time to focus on ensuring Huckabee''s message remains rather than on the politics of winning an impossible nomination. There are better ways to do that than staying in the race. Mike - you made a good run; time to put politics aside and focus on the message.

They may call McCain the war hero, but I think Huckabee is proving himself to be the most dedicated soldier for the people. With the kind of tenacity we are witnessing, just imagine what he could do in office!

He has the bold ideas that offer the democrats the change they are looking for, while also remaining steadfast into the principles that make America great: life for the breathing and the unborn.

And while the polls may say McCain would make a better commander in chief, I would rather have Huckabee''s command of the English language, Biblical and religious wisdom (and how it plays a role in the values and beliefs of extremists and countries), and his recognition of the human element in everything from environmental issues to rights and responsibilities than McCain''s military might. Huckabee will do more to bring about peace than McCain will with is 100-year war.

I am glad to see Mike Huckabee continue because christians have to send a clear message that we take our views seriously and that we desire a candidate that is willing to stand up for what is right before God, not just what is popular. I believe in miracles too.

As I watch where the attacks on Huckabee''s candidacy come from, I am wondering if the powers that be are frightened by the success of a true grass-roots candidate AND someone that succeeds without much credibility given him by the media.
I''m starting to wonder why McCain is being pushed so hard and I think about him being there for over 25 years. I wish the primaries here could be done over - I would vote for Huckabee, he''s truly from outside Washington

Don''t count MIKE out just yet! YES, he''s got a LONG way to go, but I still believe he has a chance! If he had the kind of money the rest of the candidates had, he would be on top right now!

Go MIKE GO! Huckabee 2008!

Huckabee has always been fighting against great odds. What kind of leader would just quit?

Talk radio convinced a lot of voters to not vote Huckabee to vote Romney in order to stop Mccain.

That backfired because the people like Huckabee too much.

Hold a complete National primary now and Huckabee wins by a landslide.

So what do we do? Volunteer for Huckabee, make phone calls, and contribute money. Lets stop Mccain. We need Huckabee now more than ever.

Vote for Governor Huckabee! He is our only hope.

Mike Huckabee may not be the nominee of the Republican party this year, but he has won the hearts of millions of Americans for his integrity, his courage, his intellect, and his compassion. When he gets an organization and some real funding behind him, he will be unstoppable. Many people are willing to work for free to make sure that happens.
