Obama Says He's More Electable Than Clinton

(CBS)
From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic:

LOS ANGELES -- Barack Obama said today that he believes he is in a better position than Hillary Clinton to beat John McCain in the general election.

“In terms of electability, I believe that I am attracting new voters and independent voters in a way that Senator Clinton has not been able to do,” Obama said.

“If Senator McCain is the nominee, we can’t start off with the same playing field and expect to win.”

He cited the Nevada caucus as an example of the fact that he can reach a greater variety of voters than Clinton and said that her supporters are more likely to side with him, if he is the nominee.

“I am confident that I will get her votes if I am the nominee, it’s not clear that she would get the votes I got if she were the nominee,” Obama said.

Obama praised McCain for his service, but said that he has “tethered himself to Bush policies and the American people, particularly independents are looking for a different approach.”

He was asked if he has pursued endorsements by former Democratic opponents John Edwards and Bill Richardson. Obama said that he spoke to Edwards on the day that he pulled out of the race and that he asked for his endorsement.

“He and I shared a fundamental view that it is not enough to change political parities in the White House,” Obama said. “You’ve got to bring about more fundamental change.”

Obama, who is on his way to New Mexico, said that he is not expecting a Richardson endorsement today but that he would “love to be pleasantly surprised.”

I, for one, live in the trenches of life and not in the clouds. Meaningful change is concrete. Hilary Clinton understands this to her very core. I once knew a priest who spent nearly his entire life trying to inspire people broken by life to make change. It saddened me to hear him say that the only thing that really changed were the faces of those that he toiled to inspire. In the trenches of life I have met many a community organizer. Like Obama, who sought change by inspiring others to change but time and again, created only short-lived headlines and conflict and resolved nothing; though the hidden agenda may have been achieved. Barack Obama offers old medicine to new faces. Been there done that, no thanks. Obama is in it for himself and cannot be trusted, as in the case of the Maytag plant closures where he failed to speak up for the union workers while taking thousands of dollars in contribution from the owner of Maytag.

Hilary Clinton is her own person shining her own light in a world she has worked to make better in concrete terms. She embodies the pragmatic and the genius of action. I do not know her but I know this; she creates where others destroy, she nurtures and fights because she cares, she delivers the tools to build our own lives and in the process a just and stronger America. To my brothers and sisters in the Latino community, thank you for standing with Hilary to build the new coalition for change.

" "IF" by some ill-fated misconception, Hill-Bill becomes the nominee, I could not in good conscience vote for her/them. I will cross party lines and vote for whoever or whatever else is out there."

What a coinsidence that you say this because I was thinking the same thing this evening after learning of MoveOn''s decision to back Obama. The difference is, I will be abandoning the Democratic party in November and voting for McCain should Obama receive the Democratic nomination. Obama has no proven tack record and lacks the experience needed to run this country. The idea of Obama handling foreign affairs scares me to death!

Harpersage and BarbJC1, promise me one thing. You must not procreate. We must better our species through natural selection and you two clearly are challenged. Which debates have you been watching? Obama (and Clinton for that matter) have made clear distinctions on where they stand on several pivotal issues- from health care to the war in Iraq to their style of management. If you need further clarification, please advise. I want you to make the most well-informed voting selection.

i am offended by hillary''s use of the gender card, so i won''t be voting for her in november! she has no self respect to let her husband do what he did to her, not once but repeatedly. she is not strong enough to lead the country.

While Obama raised an unbeliable $32 million last month, he goes into Super Tuesday the underdog. The Wall Street Journal says Obama trails Clinton by large margins in polls in most of the big states.
But as history shows, no amount of polls can predict what voters will do once they enter the voting booth. And both canidates seem very unlikely to give up the fight anytime soon.

Obama using the word "IF" constantly and never giving a definitive answer to anthing is what I have been telling people all along.
America, I understand Hillary Clinton is not perfect, but for the love of America, at least she gives a straight answer.
Women of America, wake up and support your "sister". Aren''t you tired of the your children being killed in unwanted wars, your children doing without because of the greed of oils companies. Because of the oil companies, the cost of food, clothing, utilities have all gone through the roof.
Women of America how much longer are you going to tolerate this? Obama maybe bi-racial but he is still a man and will run right along with the pack of good ole boys in Washington.

He Obama keeps hoping for Edwards and Richardson to support him. All I can say to that is time will tell but I can''t help but remember what Edwards said about Obama kept sitting the fence and just passing on all the issues with out letting any one know how he felt. That was playing it pretty safe, that way he could go either way once he which was the safest. Clever huh??

BOY!!, Obama couldn''t be more wrong! "IF" by some wierd chance he & Ted manage to pull it off & he is the choice I for one will cross the line and vote for a Republican. My family has been Democrat as far back as I can remember but this calls for the change to cross over. Watching all the debates I couldn''t help but notice how he (Obama) just repeats everything Hillary says. Some of his clever remarks have no doubt came from the archives that Ted and his neice found that was once Bobby''s or John''s. Some of us are able to see through the so called clever tactics.
