Huckabee Tries to Fire Up His Supporters

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

AUGUSTA, MICH. -- "Amen" is usually the word of choice murmered in Mike Huckabee religiously-overtoned crowds. But the phrase of choice at this early morning rally of approximately 100 was "That's right."

Coming to the event with a working-class pitch that resonates well with his crowds here, Huckabee, in a veiled jab at his multimillionaire rival Mitt Romney, listed off the folks for whom the economy is not working.

"For those for whom summer isn't in a verb. For those of who didn't get the finest education at finest boarding schools on the East Coast. For those of us who didn't grow up with a silver spoon -- we were just happy to have a spoon. Those of us who never really entered the country club -- we were just hoping to just be able to play basketball at the Boys Club. For those us who didn't have silk stockings but cotton socks were nice to have... for people waiting the tables and handling the bags and driving in the front seat of cabs, not riding in the back of the cab. Ask those folks and the economy is not doing all that great for them."

In a implicit rub at John McCain, Huckabee offered himself as a Washington outsider: "Lot of people thought 'where's this guy been living?' Well, I've been living in real world while some are living in that insular bubble called Washington, D.C."

"I know that there are some candidates out there saying Michigan's lost jobs you will never see them again," he said, referring to a McCain comment from last week. Huckabee argued that it was time for the U.S. to save Michigan after all that it had done to boost the country's economy.

In this election, Huckabee said, "You'll have to decide, do they represent the values and the views that you think about, you worry about when you sit at your dinner table tonight? Do they understand your family? Have they ever, for a moment, really truly known what happens when you lose your paycheck?"

"The only hope they've really got is the Lord and hope for some people in the government who have the good, decent common sense to understand that if we can't protect the American workers and the American people, if we're more interested in outsourcing our jobs and our freedom, we aren't making sure Americans have some stability, then we need some different people running the government," said Huckabee.

"I'm not going to ask you to go vote, and not care who you vote for. I want you to vote for me. And I'll hope you want to, and I hope you'll not only go, but you'll get on your phone and you'll get on your email list, and you'll start going door to door, do whatever you gotta do, call radio stations and get on the talk lines. Let's burn this state up over the next 30 hours."

We each seem to have our own major issue(s) that make their choice for President seem like the best one. My question is: Would someone tell me why we should NOT elect Ron Paul?

The rest, with Richardson out and Kucinich low in the polls, seem to be talking crazy talk about our military adventures in the Middle East. Additionally, no one else seems to understand the problems with the economy, inflation, and out of control deficit spending. Inflation is going to eat us alive, as it has already started to do so. Do you really believe that the REAL inflation rate last year, the rate that was used by the government for Social Security check increases this month, was 2.3%?

One can not talk about tax cuts without ALSO talking about cutting spending. We have a $9 trillion debt (double since 2000) that must be paid so we can afford Social Security and Medicare. The interest payments will go sky high when we begin to fight inflation with higher Federal Reserve bank rates.

And we must stop inflation or everyone''s life savings will go down the tubes, along with the middle class, like what has happened to the middle class in most countries south of our border. Inflation is coming, unless Republicans begin to understand the seriousness of runaway deficits and spending. And start educating the country. A Democratic President will surely not fight inflation like Volcker and Reagan did!

Ron Paul''s analysis may be correct in the long-term, but you can''t turn a battle-ship around overnight. He is seen by too many as a dreamer, plus he does not exude the charisma that younger, larger, and more deep-voiced men can. It is a tragedy that we choose our Presidents that way, but look at history. No Ron Pauls.

Mike Huckabee is an electable alternative. He has the looks, the brains, and the courage, plus he is for the Fair Tax. He is also not part of the discredited Republican establishment. If the Paul supporters turned to Huckabee, they would advance their cause.

MICHIGAN ROMNEY BACKER SWITCHES TO HUCKABEE

As most polls of likely primary voters in Michigan now show a near-tie between Republicans Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and John McCain, the Romney camp got a jolt Saturday as a key backer announced he was switching his support to Huckabee.

With three days to go before the primary, State Rep. Fulton J. In an exclusive interview the evening before his announcement, stalwart conservative Sheen -- namesake-nephew of the legendary Roman Catholic bishop in the 1940%u2019s and %u201850%u2019s -- said that Romney%u2019s attacks on Huckabee%u2019s Fair Tax proposal convinced him to switch to the Arkansas man.

McCain-ACLU %u2014 the unprecedented granting of due-process rights to unlawful enemy combatants (terrorists).

McCain has repeatedly called for the immediate closing of Guantanamo Bay and the introduction of al-Qaeda terrorists into our own prisons %u2014 despite the legal rights they would immediately gain and the burdens of managing such a dangerous population.

While McCain proudly and repeatedly points to his battles with Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who had to rebuild the U.S. military and fight a complex war, where was McCain in the lead-up to the war %u2014 when the military was being dangerously downsized by the Clinton administration and McCain%u2019s friend, former Secretary of Defense Bill Cohen? Where was McCain when the CIA was in desperate need of attention? Also, McCain was apparently in the dark about al-Qaeda like most of Washington, despite a decade of warnings.

My fingers are crossed that at the next debate, either Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney will find a way to address McCain%u2019s record. (Mike Huckabee won%u2019t, as he is apparently in the tank for him.)

And McCain%u2019s stated opposition to the Bush 2001 and 2003 tax cuts was largely based on socialist, class-warfare rhetoric %u2014 tax cuts for the rich, not for the middle class. The public record is full of these statements. Today, he recalls only his insistence on accompanying spending cuts.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, McCain was consistently hostile to American enterprise, from media and pharmaceutical companies to technology and energy companies.

McCain also led the Gang of 14, which prevented the Republican leadership in the Senate from mounting a rule change that would have ended the systematic use (actual and threatened) of the filibuster to prevent majority approval of judicial nominees.

And then there%u2019s the McCain defense record.

His supporters point to essentially one policy strength, McCain%u2019s early support for a surge and counterinsurgency. It has now evolved into McCain taking credit for forcing the president to adopt General David Petreaus%u2019s strategy. Where%u2019s the evidence to support such a claim?

Moreover, Iraq is an important battle in our war against the Islamo-fascist threat. But the war is a global war, and it most certainly includes the continental United States, which, after all, was struck on 9/11. How does McCain fare in that regard?

McCain-Feingold %u2014 the most brazen frontal assault on political speech since Buckley v. Valeo.

McCain-Kennedy %u2014 the most far-reaching amnesty program in American history.

McCain-Lieberman %u2014 the most onerous and intrusive attack on American industry %u2014 through reporting, regulating, and taxing authority of greenhouse gases %u2014 in American history.

McCain-Kennedy-Edwards %u2014 the biggest boon to the trial bar since the tobacco settlement, under the rubric of a patients%u2019 bill of rights.

McCain-Reimportantion of Drugs %u2014 a significant blow to pharmaceutical research and development, not to mention consumer safety (hey Rudy, pay attention, see link).

There%u2019s a reason some of John McCain''s conservative supporters avoid discussing his record. They want to talk about his personal story, his position on the surge, his supposed electability. But whenever the rest of his career comes up, the knee-jerk reply is to characterize the inquiries as attacks.

The McCain domestic record is a disaster. To say he fought spending, most particularly earmarks, is to nibble around the edges and miss the heart of the matter. For starters, consider:

Question:
Would you like to own a brand new high definition 60" LCD / Plasma TV with reclining chair with large cup holder for your cold beverage of your choice?

Answer:
Huckabee! He is the ONLY candidate out of the presidential field willing to implement the "Fair-Tax" system.

Look at your paycheck and see how much they are taking out of your paycheck for taxes... go ahead go look at it now.

Now take the cost of a brand new 60" LCD / Plasma high def TV and reclining chair (& cup holder) and divide that number by how much taxes they are taking out.

Example:
$3,000 (TV cost, chair) / $325 tax holding each week = 8 weeks

That''''s it, only 8 weeks to get this great deal!!!

But if you vote for any other candidate it will take years to save up for this! Say you put away $10 each week, well that''''s 4 years!

So if you want to become poorer then vote for McCain, Romney, Thompson, Guiliani, Paul, Clinton, Obama, Edwards..... but if you want to become richer vote for Huckabee!

Mike Huckabee may be recalling his years as a youngster being bullied and left out. Huckabee loves the "spotlight" that he felt he didn''t have as a youngster. I fear he is feeding an old grudge.

I''m supporting Huckabee because he is the best candidate for changing our nation.

His proposals and policies are far bolder than any other candidate''s. He''s not afraid to aim high.

His great communication skills will help him reach many voters who are not inside the traditional Republican box. Yet, his positions and solutions are essentially conservative, so if he can persuade people to support them, he will GROW the conservative movement.

The Republicans underestimated him. First they wrote him off, or laughed at him. Now, many other Republicans "have the knives out for him" (they want to use any dirty trick and distortion they can to assassinate him politically). Ordinary people are taking back power from the entrenched Washington interests, but it is not going to be easy. Nevertheless, they made a serious mistake by underestimating him.

The Democrats are making a similar mistake. People who don''t know much about Huckabee think he''s a quirky Bible-thumping hick, easy to dismiss. But as people hear him speak and learn more about him, they become more and more impressed.

Huckabee is our best candidate for winning in ''08 and leading the country in a bold new conservative but practical direction.
