Huckabee Reflects on Yesterday's Press Conference

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

SERGEANT BLUFF, IOWA -- "We made a tough decision yesterday in our campaign, I hope its the right one. We'll find out Thursday night," Mike Huckabee said, referring to his press conference in which he decided he would not run negative TV ads against Mitt Romney.

"I've been relentlessly attacked...in the mail, on television... And you know, every piece of political advice is, you gotta to and attack those guys right back, and we were prepared to dothat, actually prepared a spot," he told about 125 supporters packed into the Pizza Ranch restaurant.

"And I know there's a lot of people cynical think, well we pulled a stunt yesterday. I'll tell you what, I just decided that, if that's what it takes to get elected, that's a lousy way to run the country...it came down to--if a man gains the whole world and loses his own soul, what does it profit him? And I decided even the presidency, as important as it is, if I can't do it with self respect and can't do it with decency, it isn't worth doing if its not worth doing right."

Supporter Pinky Person explained to me after Huckabee's speech: "When I was on my way to prayer last Friday morning, the Lord told me to pray for the wisdom of Solomon." Person was seated in the front row for Huckabee's event, regularly nodding her head in agreement during his remarks.

"I believe that's what happened yesterday morning when he decided to pull the negative ad. Because he needs widsom and yesterday the Lord said, he doesn't need Saul's armor. It doesn't fit him, which is, you know, is how the normal thinking goes. Because he has his slingshot which is his mouth, and five smooth stones are the words God has given him to speak, and that's how he's going to win the election." She was referring to the story of when David slayed Goliath with stones instead of using the king's armor and sword.

"I pray for him everyday, and I believe that, if he wins, it's going to be [the will of] God," said Person, a pastor in Cherokee.

She will be caucusing for the first time after living in Iowa for seven years.

Huckabee supporter Bob Dunker, president of Western Iowa Technical College, railed about the media when approached by a reporter. "Oh you guys are all a bunch of liberals," he said.

"He's a man of God. This country was founded on God. You guys in the liberal press want to take God away from us. You do it every chance you get."

Joy - you couldn''t find any other supporters at that rally except two "religious" ones? The liberal media really do seem determined to paint Huckabee as a religious fanatic. He governed in Arkansas for ten years. Did he do anything there we might be interested in discussing? Or did he hold revival meetings for ten and a half years? Can we start talking about other issues already?

MIKE HUCKABEE A FISCAL CONSERVATIVE

FACT: Mike Huckabee''s substantial tax hikes far surpassed his modest tax cuts, with the average tax burden increasing by a whopping 47% over his tenure. (Source: Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 10/09/07)

As someone who knew little about Huckabee until the last month, it has been a disappointing slide.
His engaging smile and sense of humor have been overshadowed by what appears to be a nasty shrill voice. Why did he think that we would not be cynical when we read about his phony news conference?

Why did it come to this? Maybe it was inevitable. When he talks about policy issues he seems to struggle. His idea about a federal sales super-tax is regressive and not likely supported by anyone except the very rich. His gaffes about foreign affairs seem to show him as somewhat of a country bumkin. His attempts to wrap himself in religion have offended many, including Christians like myself, who don''t feel that people should manipulate religion for political purposes.

Regardless of what happens in Iowa, I suspect that others, like me, will look elsewhere for leadership. Too bad, he did have an engaging smile.

Iowa poll numbers are starting to emerge with Mike Huckabee 2 to 1 over Mitt Romney. It appears in the final moments before the polls, Iowa voters are looking for a candidate with integrity rather than money.

Mike Huckabee is a NEW BREED of candidate who has been running a new kind of campaign. His recent decision to refrain from running a negative ad ( at the possible risk of losing Iowa ) underscores this. His rise to the top of the republican polls with no money and no name recognition has been an amazing and wonderful thing. For those of you who have not been watching there are at least 2 reasons for his amazing rise. First, so many voters are sick and tired of the detached, fragmented politics that have paralyzed our government and want a man who sets a different tone. Mike Huckabee is that man. Secondly, republican voters want a candidate who clearly and PASSIONATLY holds dear their core values. Again, Mike Huckabee is that man! Not only does Mike Huckabee HOLD in his heart our most important values but he also COMMUNICATES them very articulately and with a demeanor that helps to win people to our point of view. Go Mike GO!

Mike Huckabee has outright lied about what he did in Arkansas. I could see christians forgiving him if he said he was wrong, but when he tells them that the gas tax was approved by 80% of voters, he is lying. He pushed the gas tax, and then put a bond in front of the voters. Regardless of whether the bond passed or failed the tax was in. He uses this lie to distract people from the two major sales tax hikes he pushed through. He lies about the gas tax because people want good roads and never explains his sales tax increases. According to Huckabee''s record, if there is a crisis, raise taxes. If the social conservatives insist on this guy, they will get Hillary, because we fiscal conservatives will never vote for this snake oil salesman.

A new BREED? He is a bigot. When he said he didn''t know much about Mormons - HE WAS LYING! He has given numerous speeches on the evils of Mormonism. Then he "innocently" asks a New York Times reporter on the record - "Don''t Mormons believe Jesus is Satan''s brother." Huckabee is an evil bigot who is playing Iowa evangelicals.

Huckabee would be just as happy being Leno''s sidekick? He has turned his Presidential race into a joke too! I am hopeful that even if Iowans mess up and choose Huckabee, at least the rest of the United States will be smart enough not to. His record has been shown and he has distanced himself from it by not talking about it. I feel like he is an attention seeker and that is why he just couldn''t/wouldn''t turn down an opportunity to meet Jay Leno

Recent Iowa polls just released show Mike Huckabee now taking a commanding 2 to 1 lead over Mitt Romney. Iowa voters appearently are very impresed with Mike Huckabee''s integrity to not release a negative ad after all.

Mike Huckabee is on a direct course to lead America to higher ground with a new American spirit.

In the heartland of Iowa, especially in Iowa integrity is a huge plus for a presidential candidate.
