Romney: Huckabee’s Press Conference Was “Confusing” To Iowans

(CBS)
From CBS News' Scott Conroy:

INDEPENDENCE, IOWA -- The “Mitt Mobile” made an unscheduled detour to allow Mitt Romney a chance to issue an unexpected reaction to Mike Huckabee’s earlier press conference, in which the former Arkansas governor said that he had decided not to air an anti-Romney advertisement his campaign had produced but then showed the ad to reporters anyway.

“In reaction to the press conference Governor Huckabee had today, I think I’d note that I’m running a serious campaign, that there are serious issues that face the country at this time,” Romney said. “I want to bring change to Washington. That’s what my campaign is about. The press conference which Governor Huckabee had today I think is confusing to the people of Iowa. On the one hand he says he wants to run a positive campaign and on the other hand he shows a negative campaign ad and hopes that people promote it and provide it to the public through the earned media. And I think that’s a very confusing and puzzling message.”

Romney’s press secretary had previously told CBS News that the governor would not be making an on-camera statement about Huckabee’s press conference today. But he (or perhaps Governor Romney himself) must have changed his mind.

Before Romney made his statement, a campaign staffer told reporters on the press bus that the governor was going to make an unscheduled stop at an event that had previously been cancelled, so that he could say a quick hello to anyone who might have showed up anyway. But when the bus came to a stop and reporters started getting off, word suddenly spread that the governor was going to make a statement on Huckabee. Sure enough, Romney was standing outside his “Mitt Mobile,” waiting patiently as members of the media scrambled down the icy road to set up their cameras.

After Romney made his statement, he asked the press, “Now who wants a slice of pizza?” Romney then went to board his bus to get the food when a man who later identified himself as a former Arkansas state legislator tried to ask the governor a question about $50 co-payments on abortions in Massachusetts. The campaign later sent reporters an email saying that the co-pay was a “court imposed requirement from many years ago” and that Governor Romney did not have the ability to issue a line-item veto on it.

Romney’s press secretary Eric Fehrnstrom offered the heckler (who must have been following the governor’s bus on the highway) a slice of pizza, but the man declined it.

Hey Time4Truth,

I didn''t say ANYTHING about Romney. I''m just saying that Huckabee needs to be stopped. I''ll take Hillary over that ***. I''m a fiscal conservative, and I think any democrat would do a better job than Huckabee on fiscal issues. Now give me Romney, Bloomberg, or Rudy, and I''ll go back to the right. But Huckabee is simply an unqualified dirtbag.

Your anti-mormon rants also tend to show that you are one of the idiots that would just vote for the most "Christian" of the candidates.

Also, sorry for the AR/AK switch. I don''t pay much attention to the flyover states. Take your Christian-Right attitude back to the prairie, you freaking bigot wacko.

One last thing - your opinion as an AR resident does not matter. The numbers matter. The statistics matter. Hard facts matter. The facts are completely against Huckabee.

Tell me about all the great things Huckabee did - things that I can verify. My mind can be changed, but so far, Huckabee is running a shallow campaign based on a celebrity endorsement from Chuck Norris.

Iowa poll numbers are now starting to emerge with Mike Huckabee 2 to 1 over Mitt Romney. Mike Huckabee''s claim to fame with integrity, honesty and charisma is creating a huge buzz in Iowa now. It appears in the final moments before the polls, Iowa voters are looking for a candidate with integrity rather than money.

Very interesting that none of the Mormon facts that were printed have been refuted. That''s because they came from the texts of Mormon publications (Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price, Doctrines and Covenants) My definition of intelligence is: if you really want to know the facts, do the research. The Dems don''t want this to come out right now. They want Romney to win...revealing Mormon doctrine from Mormon documents at that time would assure Romney''s loss and a Democrat in the Whitehouse. I don''t care what people believe, let''s just be honest about what it is. Christian doctrine is on television all the time. Why do you think they have not yet exposed these basic Mormon documents? The Dems will freak and rant without being able to refute the facts. Ignore them. Republicans...Think!

Mitt would know about confusing!

He is still trying to figure out where he is on most issues (at least for this week, bound to change next week or in the next state, depending on their flavor).

OH BOY! here comes the ANTI-MORMON rally bigots! such non-Christian hatred they spread. its like being back in highschool where all the jealous insecure people talk "gossip" of those they are jealous of, trying to bring themselves up...when all they end up doing is making themselves look weak and foolish. its comical at best! keep the mudslinging coming at a high pace Evey Frees'', cuz it just makes Romney that much more interesting to the rest of the normal majority of the US. thanks for your support, no matter what way you dish it out.

Sorry, but neither one of these men is worthy to call themselves Christians, much less honest Americans.

Neither one has raised a hue or cry about the really bad place the Neocon republicans have taken this country. Not one word.

I think I''d rather vote for Satan.

That Romney''s candidacy has stimulated all this discourse on religion is well and good. Anyone who is truly interested in learning the truth about anything will inquire at the source, not from, as in this case the anti-Mormons.

The only reason there is all of this discussion about the Mormon faith is not so much that Romney is Mormon, but that the Southern Baptists can''t bear to see their claim that the Mormon church is a cult be in any way discredited under the magnifying glass of a Mormon U.S. presidency. Thus we see the anti-Mormon blitz currently at full steam.

The Huckabubble has burst and the Huckster is goin'' down! What an immature stunt this was. What a slimeball! As Gomer Pile might have said "Golly Seargent, do you think they''ll catch on?"

My understanding of intelligence says that we are each only capable of out-thinking those of lesser intelligence. How many of us caught on immediately to his stunt? Almost all of us...and we''re supposed to make him our leader???

To those of you who still support him, ask yourself "WHY?" Is it because he''s a preacher? Careful now, this is a presidential campaign, tell him you want him as your preacher, not your president.

The liberal press and the rest of the Dems are, for the most part, pulling for Romney. They have been hiding the facts about Mormonism because they know that if Romney wins the nomination, they will be able to ruin him by revealing that Romney believes that God was once a man and he lives on the mythical planet (or star) named Kalob where he passes his time having celestial *** with multiple wives making "spirit children". They will also reveal that Romney believes that he himself will become a God just like our God and have his own planet one day where he will have multiple wives and make his own spirit children. That would be enough in itself. How could we elect a president who can believe this stuff? But there''s more...

Hey...aburns 8...AK is Alaska not Arkansas! I lived in Arkansas for the entire 10.5 years of Huckabee''s reign as governor. He was great, did not increase the tax burden and won his elections by good margins. He won in a state (AR) that hsa historically voted Democrat, just as he is drawing many Democratic voters now. Clinton embarassed AR but AR loves Huckabee. He can win the Whitehouse. Now read this...

Huckabee left Arkansas with a bill of more than $40 million for overcharges of the federal government''s Medicaid program.

When he left office, Huckabee crushed computer hard drives so nobody could ever get a peek behind the curtain of the Huckabee administration. Apparently, he is not a fan of transparent government.

Huckabee even raised more taxes in 10 years than Clinton did in 12 years as governor for AK (http://www.arkansasleader.com/2007/11/editorialswhos-biggest-tax-raiser.html).

After the school shooting at Westside Middle School near Jonesboro, Arkansas where four little girls and a teacher were killed by two young gunmen, Huckabee decided to CASH IN on the tragedy. He received an advance of $25,000 from a publisher to write %u201CKids Who Kill.%u201D And no, he did not donate any of the money to the families of the murdered children, or any other fund for that matter.

Now if you want to vote for this guy just because he%u2019s Christian, you%u2019re just plain stupid.

Huckabee was even SANCTIONED by an ETHICS COMMISSION on at least 5 occasions. In one case, he was saved by the swing vote of a woman who left the chairmanship of the Ethics Commission days later to take a state job. She listed the governor as a reference on the job application.

Huckabee even once sued to overturn the ban on gifts to him.

In early 2007, reporting also prompted the former first lady to decline dozens of place settings of governor''s mansion china and Irish crystal that had been purchased with tax-deductible contributions to the Governor''s Mansion Association, nominally set up to improve the mansion, not to buy going-away presents for former occupants.

Huckabee even tried to subsidize education for ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

Huckabee professed opposition to alcohol and gambling, but he allowed passage of legislation that made it easier for restaurants to obtain private-club mixed-drink permits in dry counties. Over the angry objection of the church lobby, he sped final action on a bill to allow video poker at the state''s racetracks, an act followed not long afterward by a $10,000 campaign contribution from the owner of the state''s biggest race track, at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.

In 1992, Huckabee paid himself with campaign funds. He was apparently his own %u201Cmedia consultant.%u201D After he became governor in 1996, he accepted tens of thousands in gifts from people %u2013 people whom he later appointed to state office!

Huckabee used campaign funds to pay for trips in his own personal plane %u2013 and failed to disclose that the plane was his. This guy is a self-dealing maniac.

He tried to claim $70,000 in furnishings provided by a wealthy cotton grower for the private part of the residence as his own, until he learned ethics rules prevented it.

He even took control of the state Republican Party''s campaign account -- then swore the account had been somebody else''s responsibility when it ran afoul of federal election laws.

Huckabee tried to force Roby Brock, the host of a public TV show, off the air for critical commentary. Huckabee had to pay $15,000 to settle the suit.

Huckabee compared journalist Max Brantly to Jeffrey Dahmer (in print, even) for publishing articles critical of the governor.

Huckabee has either pardoned or commuted the sentences of over 1000 felons, 12 of which were murderers. One particular rapist (DuMond) claimed to have found Jesus, so Huckabee pressured the parole board to let him out. He raped again, and killed this time. Was Huckabee wearing his minister hat, or his governor hat when he pardoned the rapist who found Jesus?

,Mike Huckabee Must Be Stopped

Thank goodness Huckabee has finally seen some scrutiny. Although Hillary, Obama, and McCain have never actually run anything (business, etc), inexperience is much better than the experience that Huckabee gained as governor of AK. He had a chance to prove himself, and proved that he is not worthy of the presidency %u2013 even by Bush standards.

Huckabee%u2019s only true %u201Cappeal%u201D is that he is a Christian. It%u2019s a bit too egotistical to say %u201CVote for me because I%u2019m better than the others %u2013 why am I better? %u2013 because I%u2019m Christian.%u201D Well, bei,,,ng a Christian isn%u2019t exactly a qualification %u2013 I%u2019m talking to you, Iowa.

Huckabee may sport one hell of a public speaking smile, but he has a dark side. Actually, he has many dark sides. See http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2007/11/13/huckabee/ for more details. Below are some highlights %u2013 or lowlights.

You''ve got to be kidding me Huckster! Now you''ve proven you''re not only a liberal in fake Christian''s clothing and ill-informed on current events, but you lie and run an ad that''s negative right after you said you wouldn''t. YOU BE HONEST HUCKABEE!!
A. You don''t have the money to run the ad so you go the cheap route by pitching it at a press conference.
B.The allegations are true and your too sheepish to go all out to defend yourself against the truth! This guy is a fake people! He''s exploiting his religion to get Iowa. Not to mention he''s got the worst record imaginable!

I would love to see Romney wipe the floor with Huckabee. Unfortunately I feel certain that was just another Huckabee ploy. I''m reasonably certain that both he and Mr. Romney have scheduled events through the caucus - he has no intention of debating Romney but he would sure like people to think he would. This man is (in my opinion) hoping that people won''t actually think about what he says and does! Yeah, he''s some Christian.

So Mr. Huckabee expects us to believe he is taking the high road? First he makes an "innocent" statement regarding what Mormons believe - a perfectly calculated statement to play to fears some people have. He then tells us that we shouldn''t refrain from voting for a Mormon anymore than we should for him because he''s "Christian." Mormons ARE Christians but he certainly won''t let anyone know that. Today he once again is showing us his "Christianity" by turning the other cheek??? Or maybe it''s the free press - I''m not going to run this ad but here it is for you to talk about...WHAT A CLOWN! This man is just as slick as Bill Clinton, I pray that people don''t buy this guy! One more VERY important thing - a contrast ad is not a negative ad...unless you are on the losing end of the contrast, right Mike?
