Romney: I've Changed "Almost Everything I've Touched"

(CBS)
From CBS News Correspondent Bill Whitaker, who's covering the Romney campaign:

ROCK RAPIDS, IOWA -- Mitt Romney is kicking off his final push toward the Iowa caucuses with a four-day bus tour across the snowy state.

The two bus caravan – one for the candidate, one for the press – headed out from Sioux City before 6:00 this morning. First stop, the B&L Vintage Brew and Sugar Shack on Main St. in Rock Rapids.

A homey crowd – about 50 people – pressed into the small café to hear the former Massachusetts governor and his wife, Ann. Dressed casually in khaki pants, a blue shirt and blue sweater, Romney started off recounting how he’s had over 200 events with Iowa voters in this run up to the caucuses, then he hit his new theme: the future – so new, or perhaps it was so early, he tripped over his words.

“We don’t vote for tomorrow,” he began. He then caught himself, “Got that wrong. We DO vote for tomorrow,” he said. “This election is about the future.”

He then went on to deliver his standard stump speech – with a peppy delivery. He outlined the challenges the nation faces: global violent jihad, challenges in education, energy, health care, economic competitiveness. But these challenges, he said, are no reason for pessimism. Because of the hard-working, God-fearing, opportunity-loving people of the U.S., the future is bright.

Ann Romney took the microphone and told the crowd she wanted the voters of Iowa to see the man she knows - a man with the character and competency to be president - and urged them to all turn out for the caucuses January 3rd and help put him in the White House.

Mitt Romney again took the floor and told the small group this is a time of change for America. Then he said, I believe for the first time in Iowa, “I’ve had the experience of changing almost everything I’ve touched.”

Bold words, some might say, for a man who has been battling charges that he’s changed his positions along the campaign trial.

When you look at all of the organizations that Romney has been in charge of it is amazing at the results that he has achieved. I believe that Romney will win in Iowa. The reasons that I beleive so are the following:

1. Romney has a wonderfull family including a wonderfull wife Ann who is beloved by republicans.

2. Romney has American Values that are so desperately needed.

3. Romney has an BS Degree from BYU, and a JD and MBA from Harvard.

4. Romney has been extremely successfull at turning around businesses, cutting out the waste, and making them extremely successfull.

5. Romney instilled financial discipline at the 2002 Olymics, and saved it from financial disaster.

6. Romney balanced the budget for four years in a row as Governer of Mass. A state that had a tremendous defecit.

7. Romney came down on the side of life on every bill that crossed his desk as Gov.

8. Romney stood up for the traditional family and testified before congress supporting a constitutional ammendment to define marrige as between a man and a woman.

9. Romney is the most competent candidate on both sides of the isle. He holds the values we need, with the added benefit of a proven record of success. You cannot beet that!

IOWA IS SMART AND I BELIEVE THAT THEY WILL CHOOSE A CANDIDATE THAT HAS VALUES AND EXPERIENCE IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR WITH CHANGING THINGS AROUND AND CUTTING OUT THE WASTE. THIS MAN IS MITT ROMNEY.

ROMNEY WILL WIN. IOWA IS SMART.

Let''s just cut to the chase. WOMEN in general just don''t like him. And we''re a pretty big voting block. He''s got the "creepy" thing happening, something women feel. I think it''s how stiff and fake he is, a real anal-retentive type, like Greg Brady on the Brady Bunch was. Doing and saying all the right things, displaying the surfboard in his room, yet no suntan and no sun bleached hair typical of a real surfer; displaying a guitar in his room, yet he doesn''t play the guitar. That''s Romney. He''s got all the right stuff in his room, but we can see it''s all for show. He tries to run as a Christian, yet he can only quote the Book of Mormon. Put a fork in him, he''s done.

P.S. Mormon women don''t count.
(for obvious reasons) and any others that do like Romney are too few to count in %u201Cwomen in general.%u201D

Romney is the smartest man running for President and the most moral. I like Mike, but he does not outshine Mitt and Ann. Huckabee for VP, Mitt Romney for competent leader and President!

Please Iowa, don''t vote for Huck.

Mitt Romney is a man of great integrity that has GROWN in his positions. He is NOT a flip flopper that has changed positions based on convenience as some have tried to portrait. Instead he has aligned his political positions with those of his personal values. If you do research beyond the rhetoric you hear from others you will find that Mitt Romney has shown By his behaviour and actions that he has the character, committment, and cabability to turn things around. Our country needs a man that can make positive changes. Mitt Romney is the leader we need and the best choice for president.

Woman76:
Mike Huckabee is gaining and leading in many states because average Republicans all over the nation have heard him and enthusiastically support him.
Mike Huckabee will:
**Lead in securing our borders (for all the right reasons)
**Lead us to Energy Independence
**Eliminate tax on income & productivity with the Fair Tax.
Mike Huckabee is the only one with the leadership and communication skills to get these done. Yes he talks well but he has also proven to be effective - even with a hostile legislature.

Actually listen to Mike Huckabee and find out for yourself ... his views on the issues and his vision for America and his effective leadership compare very favorably with any other candidate. This page is good: huckconnects -.- wordpress -.- com

Romney is the LAST person we would ever vote for. He changes his positions whenever the wind blows. His constant negative attacks against the other republican candidates proves he has nothing to offer about himself.

I love the title of this article! I couldn''t help but think that someone wouldn''t be able to resist the temptation to joke about the fact that Romney seems to have changed every POSITION that he has ever touched as well! This is what is so terribly wrong with Romney. He is telling us NOW all the right things that we would want to hear from a republican presidential candidate. The problem is that on many occasions in the not to distant past he was telling other audiences JUST THE OPPOSITE because that was what THEY wanted to hear! We would be utter FOOLS, pardon me for saying so, to trust the most important issues in this country to a man with a track record like this.

Romney Bus Tour! One of the basic political realities is: "the first one who quits will always loose! A campaign by bus has always been effective and inexpensive compared to jets, etc., albiet not very glamerous, but applauded by voters.
Candidates - Keep on running, good luck and best wishes! Monty Ousley Weddell

For me, Mitt Romney and Ron Paul are the only candidates that could give America a bright future. It seriously worries me that so-called Republican Mike Huckabee is gaining ground.

Please Iowa don''t vote for Huckabee.

Romney is not a static candidate. He learned from business that staying static means getting beat. After eight years of Bush''s stubborn refusal to adapt or consider other paradigms I welcome this type of thinker for President. Other than Romney''s church service where change is inconsistent with the institution, Romney has had the midas touch. Everything he has touched has turned to gold- a failing business in Bain Capital, a failing Olympics following 911 and a failing Massachusetts swimming in debt. Romney has fixed everything he has touched.
