Huckabee's New Language

(CBS)
From CBS News' Joy Lin:

OSCEOLA, IOWA – A lot can change between now and Jan. 3, Mike Huckabee said while pheasant hunting today.

Out in the brittle, snowy fields, Huckabee shot the third of three pheasants killed by his hunting group. Reporters watched from a distance and circled around him when he came back with the dead birds.

One reporter said, “Governor, you like to speak in metaphors. What’s the metaphor here?”

“Don’t get in my way,” he said.

She asked if the birds had “names like Romney, Thompson…”

Huckabee: “No I’ll let you decide that.”

With a firing shot, Huckabee launched into the final stretch of campaigning in Iowa with a photo op. Less than twelve hours after Christmas, reporters were already asking Huckabee about his rival opponents and the effect negative campaigning will have against his did.

Huckabee said he wasn’t sure what effect would be but said Iowan caucus goers were seasoned enough to “see through” the negative campaigning.

“The magician plays the game of keeping your focus over here on this hand while he’s doing something with the other one,” said Huckabee. “And I think people understand that slight of hand is not why you elect a president.”

A journalist jumped in and said Huckabee just accused Romney of being a magician.

“No I didn’t,” said Huckabee to a group of laughing gaggle. “There you go again, you guys are always putting words in my mouth. I’m going to load this thing up right here,” he said looking down at his gun.

“Just speaking Huckabese,” joked another reporter.

“Is that a new language?” asked Huckabee, chuckling. “Must be.”

Huckabee''s critics, however, have done some exaggerating of their own. That press release from former Tennessee Sen. Thompson accuses Huckabee of more than doubling state spending, from $6.6 billion to $16.1 billion at the end of 2006. But those numbers aren''t correct. When we talked to Mike Stormes, the administrator of the Office of Budget for the state of Arkansas, we discovered a different story. In fact, after adjusting for inflation, we found that spending in fiscal year 1998 (the first budget for which Huckabee was responsible) was actually $10.4 billion, while spending at the end of 2006 was $15.6 billion. That%u2019s a big increase, but it%u2019s a far cry from doubling state spending.

xThe former Arkansas governor is fond of saying %u2013 in debates, on his Web site and in that Nov. 18 Fox News interview %u2013 that he cut taxes "almost 94 times in my state." (On his site, he rounds up to "nearly 100 times," adding that he saved "the people of Arkansas almost $380 million.")

That turns out to be far from the whole story. The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration found that 90 tax cuts were enacted in legislative sessions from 1997 through 2005, while Huckabee was governor, and those cuts reduced tax revenues by $378 million. But Huckabee fails to mention the 21 tax increases that occurred under his watch and that raised revenues by substantially more. The total net tax increase under Huckabee''s tenure was an estimated $505.1 million, says the Department of Finance and Administration''s Whitney McLaughlin, adding that the figure has been adjusted for inflation.

The attempts to paint Mike Huckabee as a big tax-spend fiscal liberal are simply an old fashioned smear campaign. He has nothing to be ashamed of regarding his fiscal record as Governor. He balanced the budget every year, dramatically improved the WORST road system in the country left to him by his predecessors and significantly improved the school system. He started with a deficit and left with a surplus. If our representatives at the federal level came close to achieving a record in office like his those knocking Huckabee''s record would call it a MIRACLE.

JBREWSTER7... sounds like a paid operative, I am a lifelong democrat and I will have to say to you get over it buddy! If you think Romney or Giuliani will survive the attacks to come you are sadly mistaken, Example RUDY on THE slide! He has already started to find that his record of mistresses and state funds will not add up to anyone! Romney Looks like a used car salesman to me. The big difference to me Is I can connect with Mike, you sir obviously can''t! You have spent far too much time here to even be credible. Your posts are obviously subjective and not objective!

As I was saying I am a lifelong democrat and this guy is truly a breath of fresh air. As for the media being there today, were else would they be when the FRONT RUNNER in Iowa is out and about?? DUH! Did anyone check to see the videos available on you tube... were there any vids about the other candidates and the press pools that follow? I mean don%u2019t these candidates at least the ones on top have a press pool following them? Not a mystery to anyone who knows politics!

And finally, so what mikes made a few comments in the past! Depends on the meaning of what IS! IS???

In closing Good Luck Mike! And as the front runner you keep brushing off the Brewster mentality and if you make it to the top... I may just be a democrat for mike!

Mike Huckabee stands for fiscal responsibility. As Governor, he raised money before he spent it (on failing transportation and education infrastructure) and did so because it was absolutely 100% necessary. Where spending wasn''t necessary or taxes were inappropriate, he cut them--plain and simple.

The Republican Congress used to have the same collective belief. It was called the pay-go theory of government taxing and spending and resulted in a balanced budget and surplus. In this manner, Mike Huckabee epitomizes traditional Republican precepts.

I am sick and tired of negative campaigns trying to spin Mike Huckabee''s record of fiscal conservativism into something it isn''t.

If you want something different from politics as usual and a President who has the courage to do what is right for the average American, I urge you to take my challenge by visiting:

jbrewster, please allow me to correct you on something. If you are going to use the Gurdon Times as a citation, please do not twist the facts. The article in this small weekly newspaper, dated 3/3/04 (not 3/2/04) quoted Arkansas State Sen. Percy Malone as saying "...and this is the first time in Arkansas history we had a tax increase without the support of the governor." The article goes on to say that the tax became law without the governor''s signature. If you know anything about Arkansas''s constitution, you should know that it takes a simple majority to override a governor''s veto, therefore, if the same people who voted for it the first time will vote the same way the second time, the veto is overridden. It is hard to veto a bill in Arkansas. That is why Arkansas governors chose to simply not sign a bill and allow them to become law without their signatures. It is not an uncommon practice. Again, please check your facts before commenting.

Should Huchabee get the Republican nomination, the Democrats would get religion, he being the answer to their prayers. In his 1992 contest with Dale Bumpers, Huckabee used campaign funds to pay himself as his own media consultant. Other payments were given to his babysitter. In 1994, he set up the Action America group so he could give speeches for money without having to disclose the names of his benefactors. He failed to report that campaign travel payments were used to finance the use of his own personal plane. He converted a governor''s mansion operating account into a personal expense account, claiming public money for a doghouse, dry-cleaning bills, panty hose and meals at Taco Bell. Inauguration funds were used to buy clothing for his wife. Friends of his and his wife set up a %u2018wedding registry%u2019 three decades after their wedding so their new home could be stocked with gifts of linens, toasters and other items. He was sanctioned five times by the Arkansas Ethics Commission. The Democrats would have a field day with this guy as the Republican nominee for President.

The only thing Huckabee wants you to think is that he is some how qualified to be president because he used to be a baptist minister and is a so called true "Christian Leader".

Look through his "Awe Schucks" act and see him for what he really is. Mike Huckabee is a wolf in sheep''s clothing that uses the religion card to push his own agenda.
