Inside The New CBS/NYT Poll: Does Obama Have An Oprah Problem?

The headline from the new CBS News/New York Times poll is certainly Mike Huckabee's stunning rise to the top of the GOP field nationally (he trails Rudy Giuliani by a statistically insignificant one point), and the tightening of the Democratic race (Hillary Clinton's lead over Barack Obama has shrunk from 28 points to 17). But there are plenty of interesting tidbits inside the numbers:

  • Despite the fact that the Iowa caucuses are just 24 days away, voters aren't sold on their choices yet. Fifty six percent of Democrats in the poll who are said they are supporting Clinton said they could change their minds. The number was fifty-five percent of Obama supporters. And seventy-six of Republicans who currently support a candidate said it's too early to say they have made up their minds and could change.

  • For all the hype and attention she has received, the poll indicates that Oprah Winfrey may not be having much of an impact on moving voters. Just one percent of Democrats said Winfrey's endorsement of Obama would make it more likely to vote for him while 14 percent said it would make it less likely they would support his candidacy and 80 percent said it would make no difference. By contrast, 44 percent said Bill Clinton's involvement with his wife's campaign would make it more likely for the them to support her, 7 percent said less and 46 percent said it would make no difference.

  • In a historic election featuring lots of potential "firsts," Republicans indicated that they think there is more acceptance for a Mormon candidate (Romney) than there was just six months ago. Asked if they thought most people they know would vote for a Mormon for president, 52 percent of Republicans said yes, compared to 36 percent last June. Among Democrats, 59 percent said they thought most people they know would vote for a woman candidate and 63 percent answered affirmatively to that question regarding a black candidate.

  • Voters are paying more attention to the campaign at this point in the cycle than at any time since CBS News began asking the question in 1987. Among all registered voters, 76 percent said they are paying a lot or some attention to the campaign, compared to just 61 percent at this point in the 2004 presidential campaign.

  • In a worrying sign for Giuliani, 53 percent of Republicans said they would not vote for a candidate who does not share their views on social issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, up from 46 percent who said so a month ago. Just 42 percent said they would vote for a candidate they disagreed with on those issues.

  • As for the general election, Democrats appear to have more interest. Forty-five percent say they are more enthusiastic about voting this year, while just 29 percent of Republicans said the same. And among all registered voters, 48 percent said they would probably vote for the Democratic candidate while 31 said they would vote for the Republican presidential candidate.

Finally a Blog I can relate to.
I had to turn away from Miss Winfreys speeches this past weekend wishing I could ask her a few questions?
Such as are her estates in Montecito and condo in Chicago mortgaged like other Americans and does she realize how many Americans are suffering now due to this one issue? Why has she not gone to Iraq herself to visit the troups she surely can fly to South Africa several times a month to visit her school, speaking of which kudos to the councilwoman in South Carolina mentioning the school in South Africa. Within a mile radius of Harpo Studios in Chicago where Oprah has made her 1.5 billion there are many many more troubled young girls that could have used the school. Yes it is Miss Winfreys money and she can do with it whatever she wants to. However in doing so I kindly ask what gives her the right to go to these states and say now is the time for Barack Obama???.
Back to questions for Miss Winfrey. Does she remember what it was like living paycheck to paycheck? Having no health insurance? Paying 3.25 for gas? Having debt any debt? even having to stand in line at airports to go thru security. We all know the answer to these questions so why bother to ask. However these are just some of the day to day issues facing most Americans and why would i vote for a candidate who is endorsed by a billionaire so out of touch with the real problems facing American today (asides from her core audience)

"Just one percent of Democrats said Winfrey''s endorsement of Obama would make it more likely to vote for him while 14 percent said it would make it less likely they would support his candidacy and 80 percent said it would make no difference. By contrast, 44 percent said Bill Clinton''s involvement with his wife''s campaign would make it more likely for the them to support her, 7 percent said less and 46 percent said it would make no difference."

Yeah, wording is everything . . . you asked about Oprah''s ''ENDORSEMENT'' and then contrasted this with Bills ''involvement''. Nobody cares two hoots who any of these celebrities endorse, or even what they personally think. It''s Oprah''s INVOLVEMENT in the campaign that''s going to influence people to think about Obama with fresh eyes. She was kind of nervous her first time out, but the next day in SC she barely looked at her speech and was magical. By the time they hit New Hampshire she was doing the ''robot'' in tune with peoples'' pumped up chants of ''Obama, Obama'' and Billary barely made the news . . .

Thus I don''t see how on earth Oprah''s going to be anything other than a positive for Obama, but surprisingly the person to take the biggest hit in the polls this weekend was Edwards (contrary to his fans on this thread), so I guess Bill is an asset but Oprah is too (?)

It''s absurd to be stating that ". . . the poll indicates that Oprah may not be having much of an effect in moving voters."
The poll just came out today . . . just one day after the conclusion of the Obama & Oprah events. It seems that the poll was taken in anticipation of the events and therefore would not reflect the positive effect that these events my have on Senator Obama''s poll numbers.

We''ll need a new poll, sometime in the next few weeks, in order to get some idea about Oprah''s effect.

-----CLINTON SLEEZE FATIGUE WILL INVIGORATE GOP, DISPIRIT DEMOCRATS AND SIND DEMOCRATIC TICKET-----

-----EDWARDS/RICHARDSON TO WIN-----

It is possible that Senator Clinton is the best candidate. However, even though many may like the policies that Senator Clinton proposes, they should also consider her record, just as Senator Clinton insists.
.
The last Clinton Administration, when faced with the fact that protection rackets where assaulting, torturing and murdering people with poison and radiation, chose to avoid its responsibilities to incarcerate the criminals and to protect the citizenry.
.
Instead, they made a deal with the criminal gang stalker protection rackets to leave them alone and to consequently abandon the citizenry.
.
Do we want a President who sells out the citizenry for votes?
.
Do we want a President who sends a "crime does pay" message to society?
.
Would you vote for a President who signed nonaggression deals with the KKKlan or the Nazi party? Gangs that torture with poison and radiation are much like the KKKlan and Nazi Party.
.
We do not need a sellout President. We need a principled leader President.
.
If you are one of the few who do not know what the above refers to, do a web search for %u201Cgang stalking%u201D to see the tip of the dirtberg. Please do it before you decide to reply to my post. Here let me make it easy for you: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22gang+stalking%22.
