Giuliani Tweaks ID Proposal

(CBS)
From CBS News' Ryan Corsaro:

CORAL GABLES, FL -- Rudy Giuliani said last night that he would deal with illegal immigrants already living in the United States by offering a new identification card, which he previously wanted to offer to immigrants wanting to come into this country.

“We can have them get the tamper-proof ID card,” said Giuliani. “The people that come forward can sign up. They can pay taxes, and then the people who don't are the people who are really the cause of concern.”

Giuliani has talked about focusing on securing the borders and changing the behavior of people who wanted to come into the country, but last night at the Univision debate, he said he would extend that opportunity to the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the country.

Texas congressman Ron Paul went after Giuliani for proposing the ID card for illegal immigrants, saying it was a step toward a national identification card for all Americans.

In a post-debate interview, Paul told CBS News “it’s the wrong way to go”, and questioned how illegal aliens would get the card and if Americans who “looked like illegal immigrants” would need them too.

Florida State Representative Rene Garcia, who came out to support Giuliani, disagreed with Paul’s assumption.

“I don’t see that happening,” said Garcia. “We need to get the illegals out of the shadows and into the light and start identifying who these people are.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who was out tonight to lend his support to Sen. John McCain, called Paul’s disagreement with the proposed ID card “ridiculous.”

“If you want to solve illegal immigration, we have to know the difference between someone here legally and illegally,” said Graham, who says a tamper proof ID card is necessary. “All you need to get a job in this country right now is a social security card. I could go anywhere in Miami tonight and get an illegal social security card and an employer wouldn’t know the difference.”

At a rally for Giuliani later in the evening, the former mayor told a ballroom full of supporters that despite his lead in Florida now, he still needs them to get out the vote like the did for President Bush in 2000.

“You pushed him right over the top,” said Giuliani. “Only thing I have to ask you, when you push me over the top, let’s make it little bigger? A little bigger!”

%u201CWe can have them get the tamper-proof ID card,%u201D said Giuliani.

Um...Ron Paul right Giuliani wrong. There is no such thing as a tamper proof anything.
If Americans cannot see that this is the first step to being dog tagged then we deserve our servitude.
Ron Paul 100% correct about the the National Id Card.
Anyone who supports the Giuliani warmongering constitution burning, anti liberty, authoritarian campaign is either a Neocon with a vested interest in the status quo or very misinformed individual.

Paul is right, Giuliani has been wrong on immigration from the start and still is.
The ID card should be only for legal immigrants, then you know who is legal in the U.S.
Expect citizens to have a good ID too. Most of us do you know, those that don''t should.
"getting them out of the shadows" is just a catch phrase. The ones that want to stay in the shadows for some reason, will continue too.
Any special legalization program will only promote further illegal immigration and further headaches.
The time for playing nice is past, we need to enforce the law.

It''s getting close to the time where every liberty loving individual needs to buy a gun and lots of ammunition and training. Not to attack anyone, but to defend ourselves from the government when they try to "tag" us like pets. I refuse to be tagged. I am an American citizen and my rights don''t come from the government. They are supposed to protect them, not restrain them, catalog them, limit them, and definitely not to steal them from us and sell them back in the form of an ID card. I don''t look like an immigrant of 2007 but I look exactly like an immigrant of 1907. What''s the difference?

bones1389, don''t you believe most have a good ID now? A drivers license, state ID that type of thing. These are required for just about any transaction now anyhow, so as long as these IDs are reasonably secure, meaning they check up on the information used to obtain them, I think most of us already have an ID.
I do believe that an ID for legal aliens is needed, but the visa should work for that.

Anyone interested in a very different story (and analysis) on illegal immigration should try:

Ron Paul once again is right and Giuliani is wrong. I am so thankful I am supporting a candidate that does not pander to special interest groups or tells them what they want to hear to get a possible vote. Ron Paul has my support and my vote.

Let me get this straight: Giuliani wants to issue a national ID card to "illegal" immigrants?

That is completely absurd and only a real nutjob would suggest something so incredibly stupid. Like I can see illegals standing in line to get there hands on one of these. Get real!

I think what the lying slimeball is saying is that he wants everyone to have a national ID card, but is too cowardly to utter the words.

Rep Rene Garcia (R/Florida) and Sen Lindsey Graham (R/S.C) have just proven themselves as nutjobs and unfit for public office with their statements.

That the comments of Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. about having to show a social security card to get a job would go unchallenged shows how dumbed down and brainwashed we have become.

According to the social security administration, having and using a social security number is 100% voluntary and not required to live OR WORK in the United States.

Don''t take my word for it, either snail mail or email the
social(ist) (in)security administration and they will admit the voluntary nature of the program.

Meanwhile, an ID card for illegals will be rammed down the throats of citizens and legitimate residents as well. That the social security number still being voluntary (in theory)
should prove my point.

Once you take the "red pill" and wake up to the reality of "the matrix", i.e., become aware of the tyranny being passed off as freedom, you will see not only that Ron Paul is right, but he dares not talk about the full extent of the tyranny lest he alienate voters.

OK, let me see if I get this straight. In Giuliani''s Amerika You''ll need to show a card to prove that you''re not a citizen, so, what proof will be required to prove that you are? That you don''t have one? The proposal is so moronic that it''s scary to think that someone considered it for more than a nanosecond. A Giuliani presidency will only prove how poorly of a job public education has done in providing quality education.
"Alright, let me see your card."
"I don''t have one."
"OK, you''re free to go."
Where were all these logically challenged people back when I was selling bridges?
