Israeli Forces Reportedly Attack Arab Journalists

(AP Photo/Meir Azulay)
Earlier today we told you about Israeli hostility to Al-Jazeera journalists. That hostility now appears to have boiled over: The International Middle East Media Center reports that a "cameraman for Al-Jazeera television was shot in Nablus, and a reporter with Al Hurrah television was also shot by Israeli forces today in separate incidents." (Hat tip Greenslade.)

From the story:
Wail Tanous was filming Al-Jazeera anchorwoman Guevara Albudeiri live in the northern West Bank city of Nablus early Wednesday afternoon when an Israeli military jeep pulled up and rammed the anchorwoman in the middle of her broadcast. The soldiers then proceeded to shoot the cameraman, Wail Tanous, in the leg. He was taken to a nearby hospital and is currently being treated, local sources reported.
Earlier today, according to IMEMC, "Israeli soldiers ransacked the offices of the main Palestinian News Agency, WAFA, damaging equipment and injuring reporter Mona Al Fares when they fired tear gas into her office."

Said Reporters Without Borders: "It is unacceptable that journalists should be treated as combatants when they are covering clashes."

The organization says Israel has targeted journalists in the past, noting the recent shooting of two Palestinian news photographers. Journalists from Fox News also recently came under fire in the region, when shots were fired at them, apparently from Israeli forces.

this-is-- Every war on terrorism starts at home. We must support (and act as though we believe in) the rule of law by our own actions. We must oppose all who want to tear down our system of government, our laws and our constitution by their own lawless acts. No terrorist could do more to destroy our country than a leader who defies our laws and constitution and labels it a "(*& piece of paper". Neither Israel nor the Palestinians are completely blameless. Both practice assassination, bombing and terror, and are like constantly-fighting children in the same family. Both ultimately want to see their grandchildren live in peace. At this rate, however, there will be no grandchildren at all.

The Israelis have shot not only al Jazeera people, but independents, as well. The Israeli Army killed an unarmed American protester, brutally running a bulldozer over her body as she tried to stop destruction of the home of a Palestinian family. Likewise, the Israeli response to press coverage of its general abuses in Gaza has been instant and unreasonably harsh-- this, to the point an Israeli information ministry representative watching footage of an unprovoked Israeli attack on a small team of journalists simply apologized. The Israeli official said he could not condone what he had seen, and was sorry for what happened. Days later, he refused comment altogether, after having been reprimanded by superiors. The rule of thumb with the Israelis is that there is none. The state of Israel claims to uphold the same ideals of a liberal democracy in the US and the EU, ideals for which Marx, Lenin and Hitler reserved contempt. But in the name of its own "war on terrorism", Israel loudly tells the world it has no such ideals.
