5 killed in wrong-way crash in La.

LaPLACE, La. - Authorities say five people were killed in a four-vehicle collision when a driver going the wrong way crashed into another car on Interstate 10 outside New Orleans.

Louisiana State Trooper Nick Manale said a driver was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-10 near LaPlace early Friday and crashed head-on with another vehicle with four people inside. The car traveling the wrong way burst into flames.

All five people died at the scene.

Then, Manale said, an 18-wheeler sideswiped the wreckage and another vehicle hit the 18-wheeler.

The drivers of those vehicles suffered only minor injuries.

CBS Affiliate WWL reports State Police received several calls about a vehicle going the wrong way on the highway, but Manale said troopers were unable to reach and stop the vehicle before the fatal accident.

The crash occurred around 3 a.m. west of LaPlace, about 25 miles west of New Orleans.
