Fred Strengthens to Hurricane in Atlantic

Forecasters say Hurricane Fred has formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean with winds at 75 mph and is expected to strengthen.

The National Hurricane Center said Tuesday night that the Category 1 hurricane is about 445 miles west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and moving west near 12 mph. It is the second named hurricane of the season.

Forecasters say after it increases in intensity, it should weaken beginning Thursday.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Linda is moving slowly far out over the Pacific.

Linda's maximum sustained winds remain near 60 mph. The storm is centered about 1,305 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. It is moving north-northwest near 2 mph.
