Man in custody after shooting at Collin College student apartment complex in Plano, police say

One person in custody after shooting near Collin College campus in Plano

One man is in custody and another has been hospitalized following a shooting Sunday evening at Collin College's student housing complex in Plano, police said.

Officers responded to reports of gunfire around 8:15 p.m. in the 5800 block of Jupiter Road at the student housing complex, according to the Plano Police Department.

Investigators said a man shot another man before fleeing and entering another apartment in the student housing complex. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Courtney Jacob Johnson, was quickly detained after he exited the apartment at about 8:55 p.m., police said. During that time, students were told to shelter in place.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Johnson was arrested and removed from campus.

According to Plano police spokesperson Andre Smith, there were fewer than 100 students on campus, and none of them were injured.

What led to the shooting

Investigators said the shooting stemmed from an argument between Johnson and the victim, which escalated into a physical fight.

Police said both Johnson and the victim were enrolled students for the upcoming fall semester and living in the student housing complex.

Plano police said there's no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation is being conducted by the Crimes Against Persons Unit.

Normal campus operations resumed Monday morning, and in-person counselors were available for impacted students and employees.
