Mesquite Confirms Distemper Outbreak In Wildlife

MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) — A distemper outbreak is occurring in Mesquite's wildlife, according to the city.
Mesquite Animal Control picked up a raccoon near DeBusk Park and Military Parkway that tested positive for the virus, the city said. A total of 19 animals, one fox and 18 raccoons, showing signs of distemper have been collected in the past month.
Distemper is a virus found in wildlife that can be transmitted to pets through the air or shared food bowls, the city said. The virus can attack pets' respiratory, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. Pet owners can get their animals vaccinated against distemper.
Those who see animals exhibiting signs of head tilting, circling, muscle twitches, jaw convulsions, salivation or seizures are asked to call Mesquite Animal Services at 972-216-6283.
The city says residents should not to try to catch wildlife.
