Facebook Post Inspires Others To Help Homeless
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Sometimes all it takes are good intentions and a Facebook post to make a big difference. Jared Guynes and Chris Wiman proved that on Wednesday. At around noon, 29-year-old Guynes posted a message on his Facebook page, urging his friends to come join him at 6:00 p.m. to help out the homeless.
Guynes also wrote "spread the word."
Within just 15 minutes, he had a hundred bags filled with chicken nuggets, water, shoes and coats. Donations came from both friends and strangers. "Inside, I'm thinking you can do this anytime you want," said Guynes, "but they just need a little motivation."
The inspiration behind this good deed can be found on YouTube. Seven months ago, Guynes and Wiman posted a video online after a mistaken pizza order left the two guys with dozens of extra pies. Not knowing what to do with them, the two decided to hand them out to the homeless. They made a video because they thought that it was something different.
That video has since been viewed nearly a half million times.
"For whatever reason, seven months later, the video has decided to go viral," said Guynes. "So, we decided, in the heat of the moment, while there are the most people watching the video, let's have a call to action."
Once the bags were all filled, a caravan of a half dozen cars hit the streets of Dallas, handing out the packages to anyone who they saw in need.
"The first time we did this, seven months ago, I didn't realize it would be a big deal," said Wiman. "I don't do it for that. But I do want people to see that the little things you do do matter."
While handing out the packages, the two men said that they kept thinking, if they could do this with just a few hours of planning, then imagine the possibilities. The guys are already planning on doing this again soon. "To see the outpouring of people, random strangers, come out and do all this just off of a Facebook post is truly awesome," Guynes said. "It really speaks to the power of the internet."
And to the power of a big heart.
