IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to terms on a contract with free agent defensive end Greg Hardy, the team announced on Wednesday.

The agreement, which is reportedly a one-year deal worth up to $13.1 million, comes after two days of negotiations.

Hardy was the Panthers' franchise-tagged player a year ago after recording 15 sacks in 2013. He has collected 27 sacks in his past 32 games.

At 6-foot-4 and 275 pounds, the 26-year-old gives Dallas much-needed help along the defensive line. The Cowboys finished with just 28 sacks last season, good for 28th in the NFL.

Hardy still faces possible discipline from the NFL stemming from assault allegations against his girlfriend last summer.

The five-year veteran was charged with assaulting his then-girlfriend, but charges were later dropped after his accuser failed to testify.

He missed 15 games in 2014 after being place on the commissioner's exempt list. The Panthers then opted not to purse him in free agency.

He is still on the list and needs to be reinstated. Commissioner Roger Goodell has yet to announce if the league will suspend Hardy.

"While the national media talks about this being a six-game suspension, I'm told that there's a lot of people involved in this that think it will be a maximum four-game suspension," said 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher.
