FARMERS BRANCH (CBSDFW.COM) - An Atmos Energy worker was slightly hurt late Thursday after natural gas lit off at a line under repair in Farmers Branch, officials said.

Fire crews were first called to the corner of Venture Drive and Garden Brook Drive at around 5:00 p.m. for reports of a three-inch gas line that had been cut. Battalion Chief Lane Anderson explained that Atmos Energy workers dug two holes on either side of the break in an effort to seal the gas and make repairs.

Somehow, as work was progressing on the second hole after 10:00 p.m. Thursday night, the natural gas found an ignition source and lit off, slightly injuring a worker, Anderson stated. He was treated at the scene for minor burns and went back at work.

"One person was in the hole, but Atmos crew immediately pulled him out," said Chief Wayne Henderson of the Farmers Branch Fire Department. "That one person was looked at and treated by our medical crew. His injuries were minor and he is back at work now." The worker's name has not been released.

Crews let the gas burn off before they started finishing repairs. The fire is now out. Investigators believe that the flames were first sparked by static electricity.

The area where this incident happened is zoned light industrial, Anderson said, and no evacuations were needed. However, officials closed several roads near Venture Drive as a precaution for anyone who might be passing through this part of the city. Some of those roads remain closed Friday morning with no indication as to when they might be opened.
