DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Seventy Dallas officers received Police Commendation awards Thursday for their response to the June 13th attack on police headquarters.

That night James Boulware opened fire on the downtown station. In an armored van, he fired towards approaching officers.

No officers or pedestrians were hit by bullets that night.

"This was extraordinary," said Chief David Brown at Thursday's award ceremony. "This wasn't just normal police work."

Officer David Toy Jr. admits that night was "scary" but said, "It's a part of the job."

Toy was inside a patrol vehicle that Boulware fire at from his armored van.

The patrol vehicle was riddled with bullets.

Toy and the other officer inside dove out of the vehicle just in time.

"We just barely made it out before he started shooting," explained Toy. "I thank God. I think we were blessed."
