Metra train derailment near Union Station disrupts 3 lines
A Metra train partially derailed during the Wednesday evening rush, disrupting three different lines.
A Milwaukee District West train was just leaving Union Station at Canal Street in the West Loop when its front wheels derailed, according to Metra.
The train stayed upright, but the front wheels were off the tracks, Metra said.
About 400 people were on the train at the time, Metra said. Some passengers got off and were transferred to another train.
Because of the derailment, the Milwaukee District North line to Fox Lake, the Milwaukee District West line to Elgin, and North Central Service line to Antioch were all halted at Union Station in the middle of the evening rush.
Service later resumed with delays.
Hours later on Wednesday evening, the derailed Metra train was still in the same spot where its wheels left the tracks. Metra crews will have to re-rail it overnight, the rail agency said.
Service in the morning should not be affected, but how long it was to take to re-rail and move the train was not known Wednesday night.
