Fallen Chicago police Officer Ella French commemorated with honorary street name

Fallen Chicago Police Officer Ella French was commemorated on Thursday, with an honorary Chicago street name.

The event was held at 26th Street and California Avenue right outside the George N. Leighton Criminal Courthouse. French first began her career in law enforcement as a correctional officer at the Cook County Jail nearby.

She later became a Chicago police officer.

French was 29 when she was killed while conducting a traffic stop in Chicago Lawn in August 2021. Her partner, Officer Carlos Yanez Jr., was also seriously wounded in the shooting.

A statue of French is also set to be unveiled at Wentworth Park at the end of this month.
