Metra BNSF service restored after freight train derailment disrupts morning service in Aurora

Freight train derailment damages BNSF tracks

Inbound and outbound Metra BNSF train service has been restored following a freight train derailment Friday morning in Aurora, Illinois.

The derailment happened near Route 59, causing limited service from Chicago to that Route. Trains #1205 and #1211 accommodated passengers during that period.

Service resumed around 8 a.m. The agency said trains are operating normally now after Friday morning's disruption.

CBS Skywatch was over the tracks after the freight train was cleared, and saw significant damage. Metal rails were bent, warped and broken, and the wooden ties were also badly damaged and broken.

It was not clear how long repairing that stretch of track will take.

The line belonged to BNSF Railway, and it was a BNSF freight train that derailed. They will be responsible for making repairs, a Metra spokesperson said.

Passengers can continue to check for updates through Metra's website.
