Top 10 Beaches
Coopers Beach in Southampton, N.Y. has been a contender for the top spot in recent years, but this is the first time a New York beach has made it to No. 1. Factors like water quality and temperature, cleanliness, weather, sand, safety and facilities all are considered by Stephen Leatherman, director of Florida International University's Laboratory for Coastal Research, who draws up the list.

Buxton Beach is shown in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Buxton is home to a nationally popular surf-fishing spot known as Cape Point. It is a large sweeping sand bar that stretches farther out into the Atlantic that any other point on the Outer Banks, getting you close to the fishing. "The Cape" is home to the famous Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, America's tallest brick lighthouse at 208 feet.

This is also one of the most popular surf spots on the Cape, known for its consistent shortboard/longboard summer swells. Coast Guard Beach is a prime swimming beach during the summer season.
