Electricians spent four months installing 25,000 LED lights on the bridge, each individually programmed through a fiber optic network.
Artist Leo Villareal tests the installation in January 2013.
This week, he put the finishing touches on the software programs that transform the bridge into a light sculpture.
The project cost $8 million dollars to create, but the ultra-efficient LEDs cost just $15 a night to run.
Villareal says the patterns made by the lights will never look exactly the same.
The light will shine on the Bay Bridge from dusk until 2:00 a.m. for two years and it is expected that they will be seen by more than 50 million people in the Bay Area.
