Woman survives 5 days in crashed car by eating bananas, Pop Tarts

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A Washington state woman was found alive five days after her vehicle went over a 40-foot embankment, CBS Seattle affiliate KIRO-TV reports.

Sharon Lee Leaming, 70, had been missing since May 23. She was found alive Sunday.

Leaming's family told KIRO-TV she survived by eating what little water and food she had in the car, which included bananas and Pop Tarts.

A family member found where she went off the road.

"My cousin Bob, he was walking the road instead of driving along the road and saw that the grass was down, and so he called my cousin Jerry and went searching down the ravine," Leaming's niece, Tiffany Kolb, told KIRO-TV.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff's Office, Leaming was last seen on the morning of May 23 when she left her home for a family property in North Cove.

The Washington State Patrol said that the woman had a medical emergency prior to her crash, according to The Olympian.

Sgt. Dave Odegaard of the sheriff's office said Leaming was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The Washington State Patrol told KIRO-TV that she's recovering at a hospital in Tacoma.
