Wax pope creates stir on streets of New York City

NEW YORK -- It may not have been the real pope, but it sure looked like him.

A wax figure of Pope Francis caused quite the stir in New York on Thursday as it was driven around in an open vehicle through Times Square and near Central Park, reports CBS New York.

People were caught on camera taking pictures and selfies with the wax figure.

CBS New York reports it was all part of a promotion for Madame Tussauds, a wax museum in Manhattan. The figure hadn't been seen before.

Apparently the NYPD was not in on the joke, though. CBS New York reports the fake popemobile and wax pope was causing traffic delays and safety issues.

Madam Tussauds has apologized to the NYPD for the resulting inconvenience, sources told CBS New York.
