Watch: "12 Years a Slave" trailer

The debut trailer for "12 Years a Slave" is out, giving movie fans an idea of what to expect from the upcoming drama, which is based on a true story.

Director Steve McQueen is behind the new film, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free black man named Solomon Northup who's abducted and sold into slavery.

"I don't want to survive," he says in the trailer. "I want to live." That sets the tone for the preview clip, which finds Northup struggling to come to terms with his life as a slave as he navigates this new world. In his 12th year of slavery, Northup has a chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist, played by Brad Pitt, who will change his life forever.

The film also features Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Alfre Woodard and Benedict Cumberbatch.

"12 Years a Slave" opens Oct. 18. Watch the trailer below:
