Man dies in police custody after being pepper sprayed

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Tuscaloosa police say a man collapsed and died after officers had to use pepper spray to bring him under control as he was being arrested.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department said the death happened Friday and is under investigation.

Police did release the name of the man. They said they were responding to a call that a suspect with an arrest warrant for attempting to elude police was sitting on the front porch of an apartment.

Police said the man ran into the woods and fought with officers when they caught up with him. Police sprayed the man with oleoresin capsicum spray and put him in handcuffs. He collapsed while walking out of the woods.

He was pronounced dead at a Tuscaloosa hospital.
